PART 6: Car Troubles .5
Melissa's P.O.V
I wanted to run the second I realized that the zombies were upon us, but Evelyn grabbed my arm and forced me to stand still.
"Stay where you are, we need to stand back to back and look as intimidating as possible!" Evelyn cried. I had never heard something so stupid in my life, but as a zombie charged us I heard Evelyn roar loudly at it and the thing practically threw itself to the side to get away from her.
I didn't question her after that, immediately I went to roaring and growling sending the zombies coming for us scattering to the side. Soon there was a wide berth around us as the chaos continued. The zombies tipped cars, destroying the windows to get the people inside, some didn't even manage to make it to their cars. Of course Sierra did, she was one of the only ones to get away.
I watched, snapping and snarling, listening to the screams and thanking whoever could hear me that it wasn't me. The zombies had stopped coming near us, avoiding us entirely and behind me I heard Evelyn become silent. I could feel a calm radiating towards me and in turn I felt myself grow calm as well. She was thinking, I could feel it, she was trying to think of the best way to get us out of this. I didn't dare become silent as her, I kept growling in case the zombies changed their minds.
"I think we can make it to the car," Evelyn said in a hushed whisper, I barely heard her and was certain I heard her wrong.
Her car was the center of attention, all flashing lights and movie theme songs, how could we possibly get to it? The thing was probably mobbed. I shot a glance back over both mine and Evelyn's shoulders and found that the jeep was untouched.
What the actual fuck?
What was it with Evelyn, why was everything she touched zombie proof? Still the swarm of zombies were all still there, yes, they were ripping apart cars and victims but that didn't mean they were going to stay there and Evelyn did seem hesitant to leave our current spot.
She took her key fob out and pressed the unlock button, the resulting click not only got the music and the lights to stop but gained the attention of several zombies near-by who lifted their ashen heads to sniff the air around them. Evelyn was sucking in her breath in a soft hiss and I felt her tense behind me, she was getting ready to run. I tensed myself as well, struggling to keep my breathing and heart beat under control, if Evelyn could do this so could I.
"Alright, we're going to walk slowly here," Evelyn hissed, she offered her hand and I grabbed it immediately. "Don't worry about watching your back right now, just match my pace and for the love of god don't bolt."
I said nothing, mainly because I was afraid if I opened my mouth I'd scream. I stuck to trying to control my breathing, so I wasn't hyperventilating. I really didn't want to turn my back to the zombies behind us, but they all seem pretty preoccupied with their cars and bodies that they maybe wouldn't notice us as we walked towards the car. Evelyn tugged at my arm and I finally turned, facing the zombies in front, there was at least five that had been alerted by the unlocking of our car.
They were staring at us as we shuffled forward, and when I say shuffled, I mean we were inching. We could have crawled faster. I kept shooting looks at Evelyn, but she looked as calm as ever, merely staring the zombies down with those cold calculating eyes. From the left a zombie cut us off, Evelyn froze as did I, my breathing and heart stopped completely and I squeezed her hand as tightly as I could. There was a flicker of pain on Evelyn's face for the briefest of moments, but nothing else was betrayed there. Obviously, Evelyn was very good at masking her emotions, this would be a problem later on down the road. I just didn't know it then.
The zombie moved off towards another vehicle and we continued our slow pace towards the car. The five zombies who were interested were uninterested once more and that allowed us to get to the car without any incident. She opened the driver's side and pushed me in, making me crawl over the seat to get to the passenger's side. Evelyn climbed in seconds after and shut the door behind her.
At the sound of the car door shutting at least twenty near-by zombies turned around. When Evelyn started the engine that number tripled. I couldn't hold the hyperventilation in anymore, we were going to get swarmed.
Evelyn didn't look concerned and I realized that while our car was surrounded the zombies hadn't moved. Evelyn pressed one button and then a roar was playing through the sound system that had no doubt played the Jurassic park theme song. Every single zombie in the area scattered, they abandoned the trucks, left their half-eaten carcasses and just ran.
I watched them go and then turn to Evelyn who was now busy manoeuvring her way through the destroyed cars. She glanced to me, took in the look on my face and then turned back to the road.
"I'll have to call Biocom and get them to remove this so we can get back to Flemming's."
Really? Really? That... that was what she thought I was worried about? That was what she got from that look?
"That's all you can say?" I asked her, Evelyn didn't take her eyes off the road but instead shrugged. "How did you do that? Any of that? Why the hell are zombies afraid of you?"
Evelyn sighed aggressively like my questions were annoying her. "Why does it matter so long as you're alive?"
"Because... what the fuck Evelyn? I get why people are scared of you but why would zombies be? They're our predators!"
Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Zombies are scared of me for the same reason the people are."
"Because you're a badass?"
Evelyn shot me a confused look. Did she not know how badass she was? How terrifying and threatening she could be?
"No, because of Steve. Best zombie hunter alive that Steve-o. He taught me how to be intimidating, and how to scare them off and there's nothing more terrifying to a zombie than something that can kill them."
I didn't want to tell her that it made no sense that zombies would be afraid of her because of Steve. Steve was a person and zombies didn't have memories. Besides something else was bugging me, something at the back of my mind...
"Did you say you want the road clear so you can go back to see Flemming?" I asked her. Evelyn nodded, now that she was out of the chaos caused by the zombies she was fiddling with the radio. "You're going to continue to work with him even though he betrayed you?"
"I don't know, that remains to be seen," Evelyn said all mysteriously and what not.
"What does it depend on?" I asked.
Evelyn's smile was small but devious and it kind of scared me. In fact it scared me more than being surrounded by rampaging zombies.
"On how well he begs."
I had to sit there and listen as Evelyn called Biocom and ordered the trucks out to the Fodder Flats. She dropped me of at the house before going to collect Steve. I sort of felt bad for Flemming but I was now more afraid for myself. If Evelyn found out that I was helping my friends betray her, would my life depend on how well I beg too?
