PART 16: The Beast .5

Connor's P.O.V.

Melissa went straight to bed the second Jack dropped her off.

She had had this rosy glow about her face and this lovesick smile that was so unlike her. At first Rebecca and I were confused about what was going on with her, and she wasn't too forth coming about what had her smiling like that when we asked. She was clear that she wasn't injured though, which was good because I was starting to think she had a concussion or something.

"Where's Evelyn?" we had asked her, once we were certain that she was relatively okay, but she had just smiled in that dazed way of hers.

"Godrick's out looking for her, I'm sure she's fine," she had said. Wait... she didn't know where Evelyn was and she had left her... wherever she had been? "Leave the drawbridge down, I'm sure she'll be home soon. I'm going to go shower and go to bed."

Then she just skipped her way up the stairs, humming to herself as she went.

Both Rebecca and I exchanged glances because... well... this was weird. Maybe this particular life-or-death situation she had just been in was too much for her, the literal last straw. Maybe she had finally snapped.

We weren't going to ask her that though, and she was right about leaving the drawbridge down at least.

Normally Evelyn was clear about not leaving the drawbridge down, but she wasn't back yet. We wanted to be sure that she got back in without any trouble, even though she'd be the one to be able to get it down anyway, she was the one with the remote to it after all.

As she said she would, Melissa was out cold the second she was done with her shower. Even Rebecca had gone up to bed, but I couldn't sleep.

Oh I tried to.

I had my own before-bed shower, and cup of hot cocoa before retiring to my room. I even lay in bed wiling myself to sleep. It just didn't happen. I couldn't fall asleep.

I couldn't stop thinking about what we would do if Evelyn didn't come back. I'd be in charge of course, Melissa would fight me, but it would make sense that it was me. I had helped Brandon with our own colony back in Montreal so it would make sense that I would take over here.

I'd have to figure out a way to operate this house without the system though, I wondered if there way anyway to get back to manual operations.

Though there was a good chance that, without Evelyn, we'd have to leave the house behind. It'd shut down on it's own and be useless to us.

Maybe I could start up a new colony, in a hotel or apartment building just like Brandon did. I'd be the new Evelyn, take over all her trade route and deals. I had gone with her and Melissa I would remember where to go... mostly.

I'd have to introduce myself to Steve.

But I'd have to play the part of worried housemate first. I'd have to try to find Evelyn, because, let's be honest here, I didn't want to loose the house. I wanted to build on something that already existed not build from scratch.

Eventually, when the sun started to rise, I got out of bed myself. I made myself coffee and decided that if Evelyn wasn't back by noon I was going to get Melissa to take me to where she had last seen Evelyn and then start looking for her.

But I didn't even get to finish the coffee when suddenly someone was knocking on the door.

I knew right away it wasn't Evelyn because she had the biometric lock to open the door, so I was immediately wary.

Problem was, Evelyn still didn't trust us with guns and the really sharp knives were locked away. Also because she didn't trust us.

I did, however, grab a fork, the sharpest one I could find.

By this point the person on the other side of the door was fairly pounding on the door. I pulled it open quickly, fork in hand ready to defend myself, but it was just Godrick and Jack.

Both of them glared at me.

"Where's Evelyn?" Godrick asked, pushing past me, while Jack chuckled at me.

"Is that a fork? Where you really going to come at us with a fork?"

I moved aside to let them in and then shut the door after them.

"She doesn't let us have weapons unless we're going out."

"Yeah that sounds like Evelyn," Jack said. "Nothing but trust issues and sarcastic quips."

"What are you guys doing here?" I asked, being sure to check if they had Evelyn with them.

I was guessing they didn't because Godrick had asked me where she was. He was also upstairs, by the sounds of it, pounding on the door to the attic.

Well good luck. She had the only key to that, and she wasn't home.

"We had a situation, he's looking for answers I guess," Jack said with a shrug. "Not sure why he thought Evelyn would know."

"Know what? What happened?"

"The Beast crashed into our camp, destroyed everything, and then just left."

The Beast? Like the giant beast that everyone was afraid of? Evelyn had said that it didn't come out of it's zones, her house wasn't in it's zone and neither was the 401 Drifter's camp. So why would it go all the way out there?

"How many people did you lose?"

"Actually not many," he said. "It was like it just came in to destroy everything. It definitely didn't feast."

Huh. Honest, I didn't know if that was normal or not. I was guessing not.

"Where's Evelyn?" Godrick asked, as he stomped down the stairs towards where me and Jack were standing.

"Well, I unno..."

"Wait... so.... Evelyn didn't come back here?" Godrick asked, sounding really surprised. "Really?"

"Well... No..."

"And you just... went to sleep?"

"Well... I mean... it's Evelyn... we assumed she was with you."

Godrick shook his head. "No... I didn't find her."

"So what does that mean?" I asked him. "I mean, she's got to be in trouble. And... well... the Beast was at your compound so you guys aren't safe. Is something going on? Or has the Beast ever attacked the Drifters before?"

"No. I mean, it's come close but it's never... it's never actually come towards the compound before. And it didn't really eat anyone."

"How do you know?" I asked, seemed fair. The Beast was huge, someone had to have been snatched up.

"We did a head count, only one person was missing."

I found myself sighing. "So someone did get eaten."

"Yeah, but eating only one person... that can't be normal," Jack said.

"Wait," Godrick said. "Who was missing? Who did he eat?"

"Oh uh... Mina," Jack said. "I'm going to have to as Evelyn see if we have any medics in the city that might want to work for us. If not I'm going to have to call Orion and I really don't want to have to tell him that this happened."

Godrick, however, wasn't listening anymore. The second Jack told him who it was, his eyes had gone glassy.

"He took Mina," Godrick breathed out. "Only Mina right? Did it... would you say that it was looking for something?"

Jack turned to him confusion written on all of his features. "I mean... I guess?"

"Like it stuck it's head into our buildings and just what? Rooted around? Does that sound right?"

"Uh... yeah..." Jack said. "I guess that's what it was doing. But... I mean, it's a zombie, do you really think it just came to our compound to find something? To find Mina? Why would a zombie want Mina specifically?"

"He got a doctor," Godrick whispered and Jack and I exchanged glances.

Godrick's blue eyes had seemingly glazed over and he was thinking very hard about something. He actually sort of had a look on his face that was similar to the kind of look that Evelyn got when she was thinking.

You could see the wheels in her head turning when you looked into those ice blue eyes of hers. Well, Godrick's look was mighty similar to that one.

"You think the Beast, came all the way to my compound for a doctor? What the hell could an undead massive zombie need a doctor for?"

Godrick seemed to know the answer though. He just didn't let us in on it.

"Evelyn's in trouble, we have to find her," Godrick said heading back towards the truck.

"Hey! Wait a second! What's going on Godrick?!" Jack cried rushing after his man. I paused, only to get my coat on.

"Wait! I'm coming with you!" I cried, jogging to the truck.

Of course I was going to go. It was finally my chance to prove I was of some kind of worth. I was going to save Evelyn, and when she owed me, I'd solidify Rebecca's safety in the house.

I didn't bother to leave a note. I'd call the radio and let them now once I figured they were awake. This opportunity was too good to pass up.
