PART 15: The Wakened .1

Godrick's P.O.V

Breathless and panting, but a safe distance away, both Evelyn and I came to a stop. We could still see the Dome, we could see the hole in the wall that the Beast had gone through and we had used to get out. We could even still hear the Beast rampaging about, though we couldn't see it anymore.

The Jeep had been left behind, on the other side of the Dome, and while I wanted to get her to drive me home, I wanted to find Jack too.

"We should split up," Evelyn said, interrupting my thoughts. "Figure out where they are."

She then tossed me her keys.

"Wait... what about you?"

"I'll be fine. You find them and then drive back. I'll rendezvous with Steve. He'll get me home."

I paused, only because I really didn't like the idea of leaving her on her own, even if she had Steve's support. But I also knew, first hand, just how resourceful Evelyn was, and how much she hated it when people tried to help her when she didn't want it.

"You gonna be okay?"

Evelyn pinned me with a dry glare and that was my answer.

I did note, as I left her behind, that she was peering back into the Dome, which meant she was no doubt thinking about pilfering it. Not sure if that was wise, or not, when we didn't know where Tiberius was, but if she wanted to do it I wasn't going to stop her.

Since Evelyn could take care of herself that I'd busy myself with figuring out where Melissa and Jack went. I started with the Jurassic Jeep, because I figured if they saw it, that's where they'd stay.

I got to the Jeep and just looked around. As per usual there were zombies milling around but none of them were paying any attention to me or the Jeep.

I wasn't stupid though. I wasn't going to start screaming for Jack and Melissa to find them. That's how you got swarmed, even if you were standing beside Evelyn's car.

"Hey!" came a hiss. "Godrick!"

I turned, spinning to try and find the voice.

I knew it was Jack I just didn't know where it was coming from.

I found him hidden behind a column closer to the entrance. "Hey!" he called again. "Do you have the keys?"

I nodded and then he was rushing towards me, with Melissa in tow. "Open the door! Open the door!"

I quickly unlocked the doors, hopped into the driver's side and then watched as Jack and Melissa got into the Jeep.

Once the door was shut we had the typical fodder zombies shuffling about. I locked both doors but didn't start the Jeep.

Anymore noise past what we just made we'd get swarmed and if I lost the Jurassic Jeep I would not hear the end of it.

"Where's Evelyn?" Melissa asked me, her voice lowered.

"She's off looking for you guys."

"You guys split up?" Jack hissed. "Isn't that stupid? Rule number... whatever... stay with your buddy."

Maybe for some people, but not Evelyn.

"She'll be fine."

"The fucking Beast is in the Dome right now. How did you two even get out alive?"

"We ducked, and ran. Simple," I snapped back.

It wasn't entirely a lie. But if he asked for more detail I'm not sure I'd have anything to give him.

"Okay well we gotta leave. Cause that sucker is gonna get bored at some point..."

I shook my head and cut him off. "No. We're staying. We're staying until we find Evelyn."

It was a complete disregard of a direct order. She had been very clear about me driving away when I found them. I knew that was what she wanted me to do I just wasn't going to do it.

"So we all can die?"

"We're staying," Melissa said, softly but firmly and Jack finally stopped complaining.

We were silent, each of staring out the window. The zombies had lost interest in us long ago and had milled off. Sooner or later Evelyn was going to show up, I believed that in my heart. She hadn't ever let me down yet.

But I didn't get Evelyn. There was a sudden pop like explosion and then a star burst of pink lit up the sky.

Sierra.

"The Carnal Circus is out? NOW?"

It wasn't a normal hunt night. Evelyn was clear she only got certain times of the day to go out, and Evelyn was certain not to be out during those times. If Sierra was out it was because she knew Evelyn was out and she was looking for her. Again.

You'd think Sierra would have given up after all these years, but that grudge between them ran pretty deep.

I tossed Jack the keys and then opened up the door. "You guys leave. Head back to the Shady House, now. I'm going to go find Evelyn."

I shut the door behind me and ran off. Going back to where I had last seen Evelyn.

I couldn't hear the Beast anymore, I couldn't tell if it had gone or not and I wasn't going to stick around and find out. I went in the direction I figured Evelyn would go, hoping to find her before Sierra did.

Unbeknownst to me, after I ran off, the Beast lumbered out of the hole it had created. It raised its head to watch the dying embers of that pink flare fade out of the sky.

It took it's time to sniff at the air, before letting out a low rumbling growl and deciding to head back to its lair.
