PART 14: The Gladiator .4

Jack's P.O.V.

Every time someone died, the crowd sitting in the rafters would cheer.

And honestly that was worse than anything else I was dealing with at that moment. But I had to be the strong one, I was a Drifter Duke, I had to act like it, even in the face of certain death.

Supply drops and new types of zombies to battle were timed, we figured out. We had to count buzzers. There fist buzzer was new people being released. Second was new zombies. Third would be supplies. But recently the supply drops had gotten less and less frequent but more and more zombies were being added into the mix. And there were no more people. We seemed to be the last of them.

We were trying to fortify our little area, but it was getting harder and harder as our supplies began to dwindle.

Then a supply dropped, we heard the alarm of the panels in the ceiling open up and the sound of a crate hitting the ground.

But we were surrounded.

Tiberius had let out the predators, two packs of them, and they were trying to scale the crudely built building we were in.

It was like one of those paintball sheds, except it had two floors. Melissa and I were on the top but below us we could hear the others arguing.

I had a feeling I knew about what.

We were out of SMG ammo, all we had left was pistols and long rage rifles and two shot shot-guns. That would not be good against the horde outside our barricaded door.

I wasn't entirely surprised when the men came up the stairs heading towards us.

"Is it wise to leave the first floor unmanned?" I snarled but that was the least of our worries right now.

"We have a plan," the man who seems to think he's the leader now said.

"Okay?"

"We're going to sacrifice someone. They'll distract the zombies and we can get the ammo."

Yeah, that was worrying.

"Okay, and which idiot is going to do that?"

None of them answered me, so it was pretty clear that he meant one of us. Then, before I could argue, before I could stop them, they just charge forward and pushed Melissa through the window.

Now, I could have argued. I could have asked what the hell was going on. But no, I shot the three men before me, which was a waste of bullets but whatever. I wounded each and every one of them, shot them all in the leg so they wouldn't be able to run and then I too jumped right out that window.

I landed on a zombie, taking it down to the ground before it could pounce on Melissa who was still on the ground no doubt dazed. If I was lucky she wouldn't be injured at all.

I shot the three zombies around us and then the one I was standing on. We were safe for now, but I had just used the last of the bullets in the pistol. So I tossed it away.

I got Melissa up to her feet, and said: "Come on, we gotta get to that ammo."

I didn't ask her if she could walk, I just started to drag her away knowing that I'd notice if she could keep up or not. If she was limping or she was injured, I didn't know what we'd do.

I didn't want to leave her but I might have to if she couldn't run.

She could though, so I wasn't too worried. But there were more zombies than I thought. The fodder zombies were all congregating by the doors no doubt waiting to be fed, but we were making noise so they were getting interested in us.

The box with the ammo wasn't far that far from us, but it also was far enough for us to have to be worried. We could get it open, get out any new weapons that would need to be reloaded and hopefully find somewhere else to set ourselves up until this was over.

Seriously how many more rounds did we have to do? Sooner or later we'd be done. Right?

"Jack... Jack..."

"No!" I barked back as I led her through the ring towards those ammo boxes. "We're not giving up."

And we weren't, I wasn't going to let her.

I continued to drag her along with me and then all of a sudden there was a loud buzzer, which was the sound that predicated a supply drop. We had literally just got one, why were we getting more? When I looked up we were getting one hell of a supply drop.

Instinctively I grabbed Melissa and tugged her to my chest as a bunch of ammo boxes fell out of the ceiling.

All of the ammo boxes actually.

A couple fell close to us but they were dropping all over the arena, and that was well... odd. It clearly wasn't the plan but it was happening anyway.

That to me said tampering.

It said it to Melissa too because she was looking up, a sudden big grin on her face.

"Well I'll be damned."

I followed her gaze and sure enough, from the ceiling, our saviours were rappelling down. They were also probably the two that had been doing the tampering.

Evelyn and Godrick got to the ground, shrugged off their harnesses, actually stepped out of them and then started shooting, which was smart because we were getting surrounded.

A few zombies had come by to see the commotion, most were smart enough to get out of the way when the buzzer went off, though I wasn't sure how they knew, just that they did and that caused issues for us to begin with.

Because the coast would be clear, you'd go to get that supply box and bam you'd get swarmed.

As soon as we realized that the zombies were coordinated both Melissa and I realized that Evelyn must have been selling her super smart zombies to Tiberius.

Between Evelyn and Godrick, we didn't need a supply drop. They were more then capable of handling these zombies. However, they didn't seem all that afraid of Evelyn which was surprising, usually they ignored her. I was guessing that they were too excited to really care.

As soon as the zombies closest to us were down, Melissa went to hug Evelyn who winced at the contact but let her do it. She didn't hug her back though.

"Put the harness on," she ordered. "We gotta get out of here."

"What happened to don't be a hero?" I asked her which just won me a dark glare thrown over her shoulder.

"You want me to leave? Cause I can leave."

Nope, no, definitely didn't want her to leave. Like not at all.

Both Evelyn and Godrick had big shooters. A pair of SMGs. They were rapid fire shooting at anything that came at them. There was an other buzzer though, and that one was a zombie buzzer. Tiberius was going to flood the stadium with all he had.

Evelyn took in that sound and then swore. "Harness on, both of you, now," she ordered as she continued to shoot.

"Reloading," Godrick called. "Six in coming."

Evelyn turned, stepped in front of him and began to shoot. When he got reloaded he took up the place that Evelyn had left behind.

Seriously, the fact that they were so coordinated got at me. He really had to know her well to be this in sync with her, you know? Which went against everything that he claimed, but we could argue about that later.

Both Melissa and I got into the harnesses, we took turn tightening them up for each other and then Melissa turned Evelyn.

"How are we going to get up there?"

Evelyn brandished a remote she pulled out of her pocket in response as if that answered our questions.

"How did you know that was an option?" Melissa asked, clearly understanding what I did not.

"I helped him set this up."

Of course she fucking did.

What wasn't Evelyn involved in?

She ignored any questioning stares from either me or Melissa to shoot at an incoming group. It looked to be like some of the other competitors being chased by a few zombies, trying to make it to us. No doubt thinking that we'd help them, and I guess we would have to.

But Evelyn shot rapidfire into the group. The two competitors in the lead went down hard and the zombies piled onto them.

Had she... had she just done what I think she had done?

"Did you just shoot one of the survivors?" Godrick asked.

"Two actually," Evelyn answered. "I'm not here for them, I'm not taking on the responsibility of more people. Besides, them going down gives us more time..."

The argument was suddenly lost to us. Evelyn had pressed a button on the remote she had in her hand and we were zipping up to the ceiling.

Melissa and I climbed up into the rafters, took off our harnesses and sent them down. Or tried to. Evelyn had the remote and she was too busy shooting at the ring of zombies that was around her and Godrick.

The numbers had doubled, and I could see more coming at them. Tiberius really had let out all of his zombies. Which was fair because Evelyn had vastly ruined the odds of the game, and Tiberius was crazy, so he no doubt figured, since Evelyn had an advantage that he'd give his game a bigger one.

The problem was, that these zombies weren't as scared of her, and they were getting closer and closer to her and Godrick.

"We've got to do something!" I cried, though I wasn't sure what it was we could do, short of jumping back down there and dying a long with them.

Suddenly Evelyn stopped shooting, dropped her gun entirely. She turned around, tackled Godrick down the ground, screaming for Steve on the top of her lungs.

It was such a stupid move and I could only watch in horror as the zombies converged on the two downed people.

I was going to watch Evelyn and Godrick die.

What... how were we going to get our alcohol now? Who would take over the Shady House? Melissa? That could work in my favour...

And then the Beast crashed through the wall.

Like literally through a wall.

All we saw was debris flying, a bulk of green followed by a deafening roar. We lost sight of Evelyn and Godrick. We saw zombies scattering, heard the screams of the crowd and then Melissa was tugging me away.

"Come on, we gotta go."

"Wait... what about them?"

"They'll be fine."

I wasn't sure that was true, but Melissa was adamant so I let her drag me away.

I'm sure she was right. And even if she wasn't well... I'd find a way to make that okay too.
