PART 10: Eviction Notice .2
Jack's P.O.V.
Turns out, just like Godrick, Evelyn doesn't drink. Said she needed to have that edge, and I get it cause I'm the same, but even I needed to loosen up sometimes.
So we sat at the bar, me drinking and my two companions not. All of us were just trying to ignore the situation we seemed to have found ourselves in. And I was trying not to bombard Evelyn with all the questions I had bouncing around my head.
Trying, being the key word here.
"Have you decided what you're going to do about Melissa?" I asked her.
Evelyn had a can of ginger ale that she was sipping on. She had pulled it from a hidden compartment in the trunk of the jeep, which also contained extra flares and weapons, for emergencies she said. I told her that we had ginger ale as well, we had the same cans she did, but she didn't want ours, she wanted hers.
She looked at me with a quizzical type look on her face like she didn't understand the question.
"Are you going to keep her or give her to me?" I elaborated.
"She doesn't belong to me. You'd have to ask her where she wants to go."
"But she betrayed you. Would you ever trust her again?"
"Who said I trusted her in the first place?" Evelyn shot back.
I sat there fiddling with my beer for a bit, just spinning it around and around on the countertop, before turning back to her and asking: "What about the boy then?"
Evelyn groaned and dropped her head to the countertop. I looked over her to Godrick who took a sip of his own pop and pat Evelyn affectionately on the back.
Neither said anything, neither tried to explain, so my eyes just bore into them until Godrick moved to answer the question.
"She has to take him. He has her card, and he got it legitimately."
See how did Godrick know that? Why was he privy to that sort of information? It was looking more and more like the two of them knew each other more than they let on. I just don't know why they'd be trying to keep any sort of relationship under wraps.
Maybe because she didn't want us thinking that we could use Godrick to get her to cooperate.
"Fucking Brando had to transfer it. Couldn't die with it, the bastard, no, he just had to fucking transfer it," she grumbled.
"Have you told Coop what happened?" Godrick asked and Evelyn started groaning again, but this time louder and more aggravated. Godrick rolled his eyes. "You have to tell him."
"I know, I know!" Evelyn cried. "I just hate it when he starts crying."
"Who's Coop?" I asked and both Evelyn and Godrick turned a glare to me.
To her credit Evelyn had managed to answer a lot of the questions I had. There were a few she hadn't answered only because, and I'm quoting her here: "It wasn't any of my business."
Regardless I had learnt a lot in the last few hours.
"He's one of those original Five I mentioned, he's got a lab here in the city. I get him supplies, he makes me stuff. He was still in contact with Brandon, sent him stuff as well. He was the one who got Brandon in touch with me when he needed assistance."
"Oh, yeah, it sucks losing a close friend," I sympathized but Evelyn only scowled.
"They weren't that close, Coop is just a baby," she snapped.
"Regardless, I'm not telling him," Godrick growled.
"And why can't you? Why do I have to do all the dirty work?" she cried.
Godrick shrugged. "Because they're your friends, not mine."
"We are not friends!" Evelyn near shouted startling everyone in the vicinity, a few Drifters even picked up their beers and left the bar altogether.
Evelyn sat there for a minute rubbing her temples as if she had suddenly been attacked by the most vicious of headaches and I caught Godrick's eyes over her blonde head. He winked at me and I found myself smirking into my next sip of beer.
We only got a couple minutes of silence before the door to the bar banged open and Mina practically sprinted towards Evelyn. I watched with wide eyes as she slid to a stop beside her, grabbed Evelyn's arm and began to tug painfully at her. Evelyn was so startled by this that she practically fell off the stool.
"Give me the scalpel set!" Mina demanded, and Evelyn wrenched her arm free of her grip.
"Where are my patients?" Evelyn shot back. Mina rolled her eyes and motioned to the door where I saw Melissa hobbling in, her leg plastered up in a cast, the kid following after her his leg splinted as well, but not nearly as seriously as Melissa's.
"She needed a full leg cast?" Evelyn thundered.
Mina glared at Evelyn. "Her leg was broken, so... yes..." Mina then put her hands out as if asking for alms. "Scalpels please."
Evelyn glared at Mina, but went into the pocket of her jacket and pulled out a bundle that she tossed to Mina. Mina's devious giggle terrified me, because it was the kind of evil laugh she made before she starting doing questionable things to Drifters in her care. I went to stand beside Evelyn and cleared my throat.
Evelyn didn't turn to look at me, she was instead appraising Melissa carefully, humming to herself as she seemed lost in thought.
It took too more not-so-discreet coughs at Evelyn for her to acknowledge me.
"What do you want?" she asked coolly, in a tone that suggested she wasn't in the mood to play games with me.
So I got straight to the point.
"I want to know if you've decided what you want to do with Melissa."
Melissa's eyes found mine, fear aglow in them before she glanced at Evelyn with nothing short of imploring desperation on her face. Evelyn finally turned to me. "As I said before, that's entirely up to her," she said before turning back to Melissa. "Well, what do you want to do?"
Poor Melissa looked like a deer caught in the headlights. She blinked her eyes, stared at Evelyn for a bit, looked to me and then back to Evelyn. "I... I don't know what you mean?"
Evelyn huffed as if Melissa was asking her the stupidest question in the world. "What do you want to do?" she repeated. "I can't make the decision for you."
"You mean, choose between going with you or staying with Jack?" Melissa asked.
"Yes!" Evelyn said sharply.
"When I don't know what either of you will do to me?" she asked. I cocked an eyebrow at her and Melissa scowled and turned back to Evelyn. "Okay, when I don't know what you'll do to me?"
"Choose, punishment with me, or whatever devious thing Jack wants to do with you," Evelyn said. She crossed her hands over her chest and set a challenging sort of look onto Melissa.
Melissa didn't have to think twice. "You. I'd rather go with you."
Evelyn looked surprised by this choice. Not sure why, Melissa was basically willing to chance anything to avoid getting stuck with me. I was disappointed, of course, especially since Evelyn had lead me to believe that I was getting Melissa in return for my services today. I glowered at her but she simply avoided my eyes.
Evelyn shrugged absently. "Fine, it's your funeral," she said and then turned back to me. "Okay, I'm going to need a car and a couple of your biggest toughest men."
I stood there in the wake of her order wondering when exactly she assumed the role of the leader and why I was letting her.
