CHAPTER 18: RECKLESS
"Sabrina? What are you doing?"
The voice came from behind, in the dead of night, Sabrina felt like her heart stopped, the candle in her hand almost fell, causing an unnecessary accident. She turned to see Syrena standing there, in her blue pajamas looking at her sister with a puzzled look.
"Why...why did you...Did I wake you?"
She stammered, her hand still on the door, Syrena saw this, and asked:
"Are you gonna open it?"
Then the girl ran to stand with her sister. Sabrina now didn't know what to do, so she nodded, she said:
"Yes. I want to know what's inside it."
"It's only old clothes. And coats too."
Syrena said. She surprised, aksed again:
"How do you know it?"
"I guess."
The girl replied curtly. She was about to pull open the cabinet door when suddenly outside, downstairs, she heard footsteps coming up, very hastily. Those footsteps are getting closer and closer, it seems that the person is approaching this room, right? The sisters looked at each other and then with a decisive movement she flung open the closet door and told Syrena to come in first, me in the back, and leave the door ajar.
Through the gap in the half-opened door, her sisters breathed softly. As Syrena had guessed, it was mostly old coats, covered in dust. Syrena covered her mouth with her hand and coughed softly. She didn't pay much attention, her eyes kept moving to the door, where the room with the broken glass was still lying in the light of the moon.
She didn't hear the footsteps anymore, so she breathed a sigh of relief, was about to push her sister to get out and go back to bed, when she suddenly stopped, her body stiff as if frozen, her eyes still looking outside the cabinet door. Outside, the door of the room slowly opened and a figure slowly entered, apparently not paying attention to the broken glass, but heading straight for the cupboard where her sisters were hiding. If that person suddenly opens the door and sees two children in front of him, what should he do? It would be okay if it was grandpa or grandma, she thought to herself, but what if it wasn't grandma? Instead, a complete stranger? A thief or robber, for example. Thinking of this, she shuddered.
Then the same person came and stood in front of the cabinet, as if examining something. In the darkness she could not make out who it was, whether it was an acquaintance or not. The candle she was holding just now had burned out and gone out, she turned to her sister and whispered:
"Hey, step back a little further."
"Back? What are you thinking?"
The younger sister replied to her, her voice surprised and a little scared, maybe she also knew what was going on. She put the burned out candle on the wooden floor, urging:
"Hurry up, it's okay. Trust me."
Syrena watched her sister in the dark and then did, starting to back away, Sabrina following her sister, glancing back from time to time just in case, their heads entangled in some thick coats and covered in dust that caused they coughed, but they still tried to keep quiet for fear that if the noise was too loud, people who didn't know good or bad would follow.
