chapter sixteen

"I'm starting to think you don't study, Potter," McGonagall said sarcastically as she gave him his recent test scores. 40%.

Harry was sheepish. "I know, Professor, I'm sorry. I will try harder, I swear!"

McGonagall gave him an approving nod. "I want to see a 20% rise on your next test, is that clear?"

Harry nodded, feeling confident.

"Good. I know Physics isn't the most fun subject for most people, but if you put in a little effort, you can really start to enjoy it," she said optimistically.

That's coming from a Physics teacher, Harry thought inside his head a little too sourly. He knew she meant well, but Professor McGonagall could really get on his nerves sometimes.

Ever since their last fight, Harry and Draco had been inseparable, going to Hogsmeade together, having study sessions together in the library and hanging out together. A few weeks ago, on Halloween, the two boys made love for the first time. Harry thought it was magical, and it seemed Draco did too, as he couldn't keep his hands off Harry since that night.

Ron and his friends were still adamant that Draco wasn't a good person, and refused to hang around Harry while he was present. Harry didn't mind, since that meant he had Draco all to himself.

A few people had been very desperate in their attempts to break up Harry and Draco. One attempt that surprised Harry were Draco's supposed friends, Parkinson and Zabini.

"It's not a good match," Parkinson said, twisting her hair with her finger while she looked nervous. "Tell him, Blaise."

"Yes, Pansy is right," Zabini said, eyes hard and determined. "It will only hurt both of you in the long run."

But before Harry could ask them to elaborate, Draco had come up behind him and glowered at his two (former) friends.

"Get lost," he had barked. Harry hadn't seen them since.

"Right, class!" McGonagall said from the front of the room. "Today we will be studying motion! Can anyone tell me Newton's first law of motion?"

"An object will not change its motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force," Hermione recited a few rows down. McGonagall beamed at her.

"Excellent, Hermione! Correct, as always!" she said, praising her. Some of the other students looked at her in distaste until they caught the eye of Ron Weasley, who was seated next to her. His glower made them regret everything they had done. Ever.

"Can someone give me an example of this? Ron, maybe?" The old woman looked hopefully at Ron, hoping Hermione had shared some of her smarts with her less motivated boyfriend.

"Uh, if I punch someone who's standing still, they'll fly backwards," Ron said after thinking for a few seconds. McGonagall sighed but nonetheless was satisfied.

"Quite right, Ron! But please do refrain from punching anyone," she said, laughing a little.

Harry could feel himself zoning out, despite his Professor's attempt to make the class more interesting. There was just no hyping Physics. Ever.

He found himself counting the seconds until the bell would ring and he could be able to launch himself into his boyfriend's arms.

Mercifully, the bell rang after a dreadful half an hour, but before Harry could sprint out the door, he heard McGonagall call his name.

"Just a minute, Potter," she said, noticing his obvious pout.

"Did I do something?" Harry asked, going to stand in front of her desk. McGonagall shook her head and began fidgeting with her sleeves.

"Potter, I've seen you've become awfully attached to Draco Malfoy. I know this is unprofessional, but I must advise you to stay clear of that boy, Potter!" McGonagall urged him. Harry scoffed, eyes narrowing.

"What would you know about him?" Harry said, glaring at the bold, stern woman. She rolled her eyes, gaining some confidence.

"A lot more than you, that's for sure. I know it must feel like love, but you're not safe! I believe Professor Snape and Professor Dumbledore have both warned you."

Harry huffed. "None of them know the Draco I do. I know that sounds cheesy and like every other teenager in existence, but I mean it! Around me, he's a different person!"

"And that doesn't make you suspicious of who he really is?" McGonagall raised a brow.

Harry laughed. "He couldn't hide anything from me if his life depended on it!"

McGonagall just sighed sadly. "Well, if you're sure, Potter. Off you go."

Leaving quickly, Harry made his way to the Room of Requirement. He heard Draco's voice echoing from the corridor to the right.

"Don't interfere, Parkinson. I know what I'm doing. Mother will be safe, and so will I."

"And what about Potter?"

"What about him? Do you think he's my first priority."

"I, well I-"

"Exactly. I don't give two shits about Potter!" he heard Malfoy's voice boom. Harry felt his heart crack as he drew nearer and nearer until he stood directly behind Malfoy, Parkinson's eyes widening at the sight of him.

"Draco- stop saying such things-"

"Why, you think I don't mean it?"

"You don't mean it! You don't think he means it, do you, Harry?" Pansy said, trying to lighten the conversation. Harry saw Malfoy's back stiffen at the mention of his name as he slowly turned around, looking like a murderer caught with blood on his hands.

"Harry, please understand"

"FUCK YOU!" Harry roared. "EVERYONE WAS RIGHT ABOUT YOU! YOU ARE A POMPOUS GIT, AND I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON YOUR FOOD AND DIE!"

He launched himself at the blond and began throwing punches like there was no tomorrow. Blood spurted out Draco's nose while bruises began to blossom all over his face like flowers. A crowd gathered to watch, but no one dared part Harry from Draco.

They had all seen it coming.

Until one voice said gently. "Harry, I think that's enough now."

Harry kept punching, the fight slowly draining from him as Draco made no move to defend himself. Wrinkled, soft hands pried him away from the blond boy, and pulled him into a fierce embrace.

"That's it, Harry. It'll be alright," Professor Dumbledore soothed, his voice like a deep blanket.

"Let me, let me kill him! Let me kill him!" Harry sobbed. Dumbledore turned to the crowd.

"All of you best be going to your lessons, unless you all want detentions! And someone get that boy to Medical!"

Harry felt his brain explode with the anger, the hatred, the betrayal. And above all, the confusion.

Why?

Why?

Why him?

I thought we had something.

I thought he loved me!

WHY DIDN'T YOU LOVE ME?!

Harry didn't notice when he left consciousness and became limp in Dumbledore's arms. Nor did he notice when he was carried away to Medical and laid on a bed while Ms Pomfrey bustled about. No, he just was. Thinking, thinking, thinking. Sinking down that deep hole in his heart with one word on his lips:

Why?

Ok so now I have no idea what the fuck is going to happen next because this is not what I originally planned.
