Chapter 7: Won't Leave
Hanji's POV
I groaned as I woke up in the hospital, feeling cold. My head pounded as I tried to remember yesterday... I just remember leaving Levi with a stab wound on my arm. Dizzy... the whole drive to the police station... I was dizzy. Falling onto the road as I arrived at the station... had to pull myself to my legs to get there.
Erwin was there, but everything was distorted. Whatever he said... I don't remember what he said. But the one thing that popped in my mind was about the attack and who was fighting it... before I even utter a word, I passed out.
The doctor walks into the room, carrying a small clipboard. He smiled as he looked at me, "You're awake, Ms. Zoe. Hungry?"
I nodded, "Y-Yes please..." My voice sounded weak and dry. The doctor then motions a nurse to come in with a tray of food. Once the tray came into my possession, I gulped the food down and the water. "T-Thanks..." The nurse nodded and left the room.
The doctor then walked to my side, looking down at my information. "Well, you do have your stitches in- fairly deep wound and would leave behind a scar. High concentrations of hCGs..."
"A-Are you serious?" My eyes grew wide when he mentioned that. "T-That can't be right... right?"
He nods, "I can try another test, Ms. Zoe. But the tests are pretty accurate... it does seem you might be pregnant. Unless your period is close. When do you usually have it?"
"Um... on the 12th..." I already had mine this month, since it was already the 20th. No... I shouldn't have my period now... it must be true...
The doctors sighs, putting the clipboard on the side. "Well, unless you have someone bringing you back home, you're free to go." I nodded and moved myself towards the phone, hoping to call Erwin.
He then leaves as I began to call Erwin's phone. "Come on, come on."
"This is Erwin Smith-"
"Erwin!" I called out, gleefully.
"I'm currently out as of this moment. Leave me a detailed message." My heart sunk after hearing the voicemail. He hardly has his phone off when he's working on the job- only having it off when he's off arresting someone.
Quickly, I thought of someone else at the office and dialed Nanaba's number. "Hello?" Her voice seemed stern as she answered it.
I smiled a bit, "Nanaba!"
Her tone changed as I called out her name. If I could see her face right now... she would be smiling with happiness- just like me. "Hanji! W-Where are you? I haven't seen you since yesterday before you left-"
"I'm... at the hospital..." I say meekly, looking down and trying to find some kind of reason to lie to her. But of course... I was her friend and she would figure out I was lying. But then, she would know my connection to a suspect- when Levi was never a suspect on my list. "C-Can you pick me up?"
She sighed, "Alright, I will. But in return, I want an explanation. Got it?"
"Got it. Thanks again, Nanaba."
"Yep." She hung up and I waited in my room, practicing walking around and gaining my ability to walk to recover from the attack. Who was it that attacked me? And... if I am pregnant with Levi's child... how can I get away from it without abandoning my own child and keeping my job?

"You're what?!" Nanaba's eyes grew wide when I explained what the doctor told me. "N-No way, Hanji. W-With who?!"
I chuckled, walking towards the passenger seat. "It's... Levi's. You know, a key part of my case." I looked down at my stomach, groaning softly as I thought more of it. It's not gonna be good towards Erwin... because he might frame Levi for rape if he found out about the baby.
"Isn't that... bad?" Nanaba asks as she approached me. "I mean... both in your reputation in the station as well as to Erwin. You do know that he likes you-"
"He's very overt about showing his love towards me, Nanaba. Which is why... I need you to keep the father a secret. Please... I don't want Erwin to know."
She sighed, nodding. "Tricking our superior. I like it." She chuckled softly and looks up to me with mischievous eyes. "Alright. Lying about the baby. Let's tell him you have a boyfriend and recently had-"
"Nanaba, I know how babies are made. I don't think Erwin needs to know what I did to get pregnant. Alright? Fake boyfriend, a fake father, a fake other half of my life to keep Levi out of it."
"Speaking of Levi... how is he gonna react to him being a dad?" She rose an eyebrow and it took the breath out of me.
I've been focused on my job and Erwin so much... I forgotten about Levi's opinion. Would he... want the child? Or would he disown it? Either way... I'm keeping the child and never letting it slip through my fingers. But with this case... I had to solve it as quickly as I could so I can be with Levi. Let him raise his own kid too. But if Erwin was settled on arresting Levi when he was innocent... Erwin wouldn't leave it alone...
"Honestly? I don't know..."
Nanaba sighs and started the car. "Come on, let's get you to the office. Try to hide it away from Erwin- kinda lean the conversation that implies you have a boyfriend. Got it?"
I nodded, "Of course. Thanks again."
"Anything for friends." Nanaba says with a smile. "And plus... I want to see the little one... I'll be its aunt. Aunt Nana." We both chuckled together. A baby shouldn't be a problem... right?
* * *
Nanaba and I chuckled more as we walk into the station, seeing it empty a bit. "Where is everyone?" I questioned, looking around.
"They went out to arrest someone. Something about you being hurt when you came here. So yeah..." Nanaba grabbed my arm and walked me over to my desk. "Want me to help you or-"
I shook my head, smiling gently. "No, I'm fine. Thanks." Nanaba nodded and left me at my desk.
Sighing softly, I looked up to my screen and started to work on some paperwork. From time to time, I felt some pain- but I assumed that it was just because of me being pregnant a bit. I even had to go to the bathroom to vomit- due to an imbalance of hormones. If I didn't think that I was pregnant... all that was proof to me- and it was enough for me.
Suddenly, the doors opened and when I looked over to see who came in- I gasped in surprised. Erwin walked in with Levi handcuffed. Panicked, I rushed to them, wondering why Levi was being arrested. There was no evidence pointing to Levi being arrested- not at all!
"Erwin, what are you doing?" I asked him, my voice turning stern. "We have no proof to arrest him-"
He simply looked at me with his sapphire eyes. "Hanji, I'm doing this for you. You're slowly killing yourself by not arresting this man. I know what he did to you... he gave you that wound."
"No he didn't! The real killer is out there- he framed Levi!" My voice began to rise and everyone looked at me weirdly. My eyes drifted over them, but I ignored them- for now. If I had to defend my child's father... then let it be so. "Erwin, this is a mistake!"
His gaze went down, shaking his head. "Levi Ackerman is under arrest for the murder of 3 people and assault on an officer. I'm sorry, Hanji. But I have to do this."
Erwin pushes me away and I saw Levi's hopeless gaze to me. A tang of regret... of anger... and betrayal. I have to settle things right... because I know Levi Ackerman is innocent.
I watched behind them from the glass, seeing how Levi was being interrogated by Erwin... already on the path to be getting arrested. My hands immediately went down to my stomach and I rubbed it slowly. I... I couldn't believe it. I never thought that this might even happen...
Erwin then steps out, sighing heavily. "Well... I'm gonna take a break for now. Watch him?"
I nodded, "Yeah, I will." I waited for them to fully leave.
Once they all left, I quickly shut the cameras off and walked into the room. Levi perked up, not even a smile. "Sold me out, Hanji?" He growled softly- his eyes stern with iron. "I trusted you-"
"Levi, it's not my fault." I walked to him, not giving a damn. "Please, hear me out..."
He leaned back, scoffing. "Go ahead. I'm not gonna trust you."
"Trust me? I'm just saying that... I am pregnant with your kid... okay?" I felt my tears rising up, stinging my eyes. "I'm... pregnant." I rest myself on the table, looking down to Levi. "Please trust me with that..."
Silence filled the room as he bowed his head down. "Pregnant? Then... e-explain about them knowing my last name. I only told that to 3 people- 2 of them were my closest friends that were dead... and you. It leaves you to know my last name... who did you tell?"
Sighing, I looked down. "I... I did my research... and Erwin knew your name. He accused you... and I denied it. But I shut off my computer before meeting you, Levi. I swear. I haven't told anyone else..."
"That, I trust you with... but the person that wants me dead... he knew my name. Someone must've overheard you then, Hanji... but again... my kid?" When I looked into his eyes, he seemed like a wounded animal. Torn away from life. "Pregnant?"
"I only told Nanaba- and never planning about it to Erwin."
"Keeping, I'm guessing? Otherwise you wouldn't have told me about the child, Hanji."
I nodded to acknowledge him. "Of course I'm keeping the child... and I want to finish this case before the baby's born, Levi. I promise, I will prove you are innocent... because I have seen it with my own eyes and that you have done nothing wrong."
He chuckles softly, looking up- healing from his broken wounds. "Jury's gonna see you as biased. And I hope you keep our child as a secret from them- word escapes and you're doomed from your job, Hanji. You hear me? Keep up with the lie and never back down. Stand up for yourself because it means that the baby survives and you can still live a good life without me. As much as I would love to see it... you need to live and take care. Understand?" By the end of his little speech, it seemed that he was truly wounded.
The hurt in his voice clearly shows how much he's being pained from knowing his baby... and it brought tears to myself as well. I nodded, leaning towards him as I began to cry. "I understand, Levi."
He chuckles softly, "Don't cry, Hanji. You hear me? Don't cry. I won't ever leave you- even if it seems that I'm not there. Send pictures... please... if I do get convicted- which is highly possible. And you know it."
"I know, I know..." He wipes my tears away and smiles. "But I'll try to keep the lie up as best as I can. When I do prove you innocent... god, just... don't do anything to keep you there longer than you should."
"Hanji, look at me." I do so, looking at him. "I can't promise you that... but I can try." I nodded and kissed him one last time, fearing that I spent too much time there. "I love you, Hanji..."
"I love you too..."
Walking away, I looked back at him- seeing him as a wounded animal once more. I cannot imagine the pain he's in... I sighed and went back to the camera, turning it on once more. Even though I wasn't leaving this place... it felt that he was far away. I looked at his expressions, trying to know what he feels... but I cannot read him. And I promise you, Levi... I won't leave you. Nor will this child will ever leave you. Because... I love you.
