Chapter 6: Down in History
Hanji's POV
He left me alone after giving me some sort of book. Curious to see if it was the second one already, I got up from the bed and picked up the book. I admit I was disappointed when I saw that it wasn't what I wanted. It was an old history book... almost similar to the ones my parents read to me constantly.
I sat on the ground, wondering what it would say. We were taught that they were devils that escaped, leaving us behind for their selfish greed. We are paying their price as they lived behind walls that protected them. We are the ones suffering from brutal criticism just because we were born of their race. There are good people in my hometown...
Turning the worn-down cover, I read the first paragraph. "Over hundreds of years ago, gigantic beings resembling humans appeared from nowhere. Humanity has fallen. The remaining people built walls 50 meters tall, and they remained there."
There was nothing about the Great Titan War, only that titans had appeared to them. Everyone believed this. I flipped through the book, scanning for any sign of the past we were told. I found a few errors in their history book. Like how certain things don't make sense.
If titans appeared out of nowhere and only ate humans and traveled to places where humans lived, how did the devils create the walls? What tools did they have? How long did it take? How did they not suffer any casualties? How did they know it would stand? What would protect the walls from danger at first?
There was nothing when they mentioned the walls being built for the first time. Like a chunk of history was gone. These devils believed something that was so incomplete... they would have never believed a nation that's as powerful as Marley lingering beyond their seas. If everyone had this belief... they would never know the sins their ancestors committed.
To them... we were the devils. To them, we attacked them for no reason. They would've gone on with their lives... suffering and dying inside for years within these walls... and we interfered because of Marley's greed. Because of their greed, they created the 'Warriors' program to retrieve the Founding Titan from them. But I still can't accept this.
They lived happily here. Peace? Harmony? While we suffered?!
I tossed the book to the other side of the room, screaming at the top of my lungs. What am I supposed to believe? Before I knew it, all my strength disappeared and I fell asleep.
* * *
I woke back up when the moon was high. My stomach growled for food, and I barely had the strength to stand up. I looked around the room, seeing a new plate of food on the bedside table. A metal jug, as per usual.
I quickly ate my share of bread and cold stew, drinking more than half of the jug of water. I crawled into bed, shutting my eyes for a minute before I heard footsteps on the stone steps. A similar clanking noise from the keys to unlock the doors was heard. The door creaked open, and I heard footsteps in my room. I clutched onto the covers, not knowing who it was.
"So you finally got up?" I hear the captain's voice as he walks over to the bed. I hear him clanking a few metal objects before I could hear water being poured into a different container. Once it was done, I heard the metal object gently whacking him in the leg as he left the area. "The hell?"
I hear him walk towards the area where I threw the book. Not long before I heard something metal against the stone floor. I hear him messing around in that area before he clicked his tongue.
"I show you our side, and you toss it away like it was nothing. Do you not want to know about our lives?"
I hear him pick up the metal object again before walking across the room toward the door. I hear him shut it with one last word that made me boil with anger: "Do you have no respect, you four-eyed freak?"
"I hate you too, you midget- a disgrace to all humans."
