Chapter 27: My Baby
Levi's POV
Once the ship was docked and tied up, I immediately made my way to Hanji's house. I arrived around 8 pm, so I did not need to be careful about my appearance in Liberio. But even so, I can't let my guard down.
Approaching her house, I see the windows brightly lit up and cheerful laughter coming from the house. I take a quick and careful peek inside the house, and I saw a few familiar people. Mostly Reiner and Zeke. Hanji... something's different about her... I can't see well, but I can sense something is different.
I see her get up from her chair and walk into the kitchen. I carefully knock on the window, attracting her to me. She smiled as she gestures me to the back door. That's when we shared a tender kiss. She caressed my cheek with her slender fingers, never stopping her bright smile.
"Levi... I missed you..."
"I missed you too, Hanji..." I reached for her stomach, expecting to feel the baby's bump, but I felt nothing. I touched it again, ensuring that it wasn't there. "H-Hanji, where's the baby?"
"The baby's safe," she says with a mischievous smirk, "do you want to see your son?"
"I have a son... please, show me to him."
"Okay, but be quiet. I have guests here. They'll be here for another hour. Just stay quiet and keep him calm." She guides me into the bedroom, and she shouts to her guests, "I'm going to check up on the baby real quick. I'll be back."
Hanji guides me to a spare bedroom and she opens it, revealing a crib. Cautiously, I walked to the crib, peering inside and seeing a baby with black hair and silver eyes. He smiles a toothless grin before he raised his legs and started to kick in the air. He sticks his tongue out as his chubby fingers reached up towards me. A small sound comes from him, which seems interesting as I never heard that before.
"He's awake?" Hanji darts to the crib, carefully picking him up. "Ready to hold your son?"
"If I'm honest, no. I don't believe this is him."
"Better believe it, Levi, because I did not spend the last few months carrying him inside of my uterus."
She taught me how to hold my son properly as he struggled to be still in his mother's arms. But once I held him, he stopped his squirming and his silver eyes stared at me as he stuck his tiny tongue out. Hanji smiled, kissing our son's forehead.
"What's his name?"
"I... I'm sorry you didn't have a chance to figure out names for him... but I named him Zayne. Of course, he has my last name. But I'm hoping that his official last name would be yours. Would you mind?"
"Would I mind? I don't give a damn what his name is." I held Zayne close to me, trying to ensure that he'll be safe. "He's my son... he'll never be anything otherwise."
Hanji kisses my cheek before leaving the room. "I'll be back. If anything, I'll knock 4 times. Not one more or less than that. Have you two." She closes the door behind her, leaving the two of us alone. I wish she could've stayed a bit longer. I don't know how to handle babies. Are they just tiny brats that only rely on adults? Is it better or worse than the brats I have to babysit?
* * *
"Levi," I hear Hanji calling my name and shaking me awake. "Levi, wake up. They just left."
I opened my eyes, and I see Zayne on his back. He was facing me, sleeping. My arms were around his tiny body, holding him close and never letting him go. Did I fall asleep here? I got to my feet, apologizing for falling asleep when Zayne was in my position. Helpless little humans.
Hanji did nothing but kiss me in return. "You must've been exhausted. But he's finally asleep. He's been fussy for a while. I think he misses his daddy."
"When did you give birth?"
"Hours after you left." I must've given her a weird stare because she laughs at me, "I know... you could've been there. But, it is what it is. And he's such a beautiful baby boy, Levi..."
I have a son...
