Chapter 9: Some Cheering Up

Hanji's POV

Petra was gone for over a week when I finally noticed Levi didn't leave the house. I know he wanted to have some time to himself. But it wasn't until I noticed the fridge was getting empty. I knocked on Levi's door, almost wanting to whimper like a wolf.

"Levi, I'm going to the store. Do you need anything?"

"No," He says behind his bedroom door. "Be safe."

"I'm a werewolf, I can handle myself." I scowled, walking out of the house.

The second I walked out, I realized I didn't have a way to get to and from the store. I didn't want to go back up to Levi and ask for his car keys, so I decided I'll buy a backpack from the store and run as a wolf. It's a nice exercise too.

I returned from the store, seeing Levi finally walking around the living room. From every room, there were a few spots that seem out of place- those things were from Petra. She had packed everything up the day before Levi came home. Now, all that's left is just Levi's things and empty spaces.

He was busy cleaning the dishes that I didn't get to today. He looks towards the front door, giving a small frown. "Oh, you're back. Did you take the car?"

"No, I ran-."

"You ran?" His eyebrow raised a bit as his voice grew a bit stern. "Hanji, the closest store to her is 5 miles away- and you were gone for an hour-."

I took the groceries into the kitchen, winking at him. "You forget I'm a werewolf and I can run in my wolf form, Levi. And no one saw me transform. I promise you. I'm very quick on my feet. In my pack, I was one of the fastest wolves ever-."

"Next time-." He stops himself before he sighs and lowered his voice, "Just be careful, okay?"

"I will. Say, what's for dinner? I'm starving."

"Not sure. You figure it out. I'm going to lie down." He says before walking up the stairs. "Just stay quiet, okay? I'm not in a good mood."

"You're never in a good mood," I mumble under my breath, wondering what I could make for dinner. I was craving steak, so I decided to do that. While that's cooking, I'll make mashed potatoes. I hope Levi likes that...

Knocking on his door at 7 pm to gift him his food, I waited for him to open the door. But he never opens it. I knocked again, and still no answer. My hand reaches for the doorknob, turning it a bit to open the door.

"Levi, I made steak... are you up?"

"I'm up."

"Then why didn't you answer?!" I stomped my foot as I walked over to his bed. "I'm not your sort of maid, you know. Do I have to hand-feed you like a baby?" Now that I say that aloud, I sort of want to.

Levi sat up in his bed, shaking his head. "No, I can feed myself."

He takes the plate of food from me and begins to eat. I jumped onto his bed, turning into a wolf. His scent grew a bit sadder... sorrowful... but the smell of the wind on a field still stayed. This time, it was like it was raining. Levi paid no attention to me as I was on his bed. He didn't even budge.

Using my hind legs, I pushed myself towards Levi's side, nuzzling my nose into the outside of his thighs. I could tell Levi perked up a bit as he gently scratched behind my ears.

"Sometimes, I forget you're a werewolf. And I'm not even going to yell at you. It feels like I don't have any strength."

I shifted back into my human form, leaning my back against the bedboard. "No strength? Well... what does give you strength?"

"Usually, it was Petra... but since she's not coming back here... I don't know."

"It's not my place to suggest anything to you, Levi, but what if I find a werewolf case? You can get out of this house. Find something to do. Maybe find some purpose hunting the bad werewolves and well... protecting the innocent people from danger. How's that?"

"Sure." Levi looks at me with a slight smile- a smile that only the corner of his mouth seemed to lift. "Only if you can find a werewolf case. Now, I don't know if I should be happy for a case or disappointed to know that an innocent person was killed."

"I see what you mean, but don't worry about that part. I'll find us a case, okay?"
