Chapter 8: Scents

Levi's POV

Hanji was right. I had my doubts, but with her advice, I found the werewolf. That werewolf was killing a lot more humans in secret. The werewolf was surprised to know it attracted a hunter. Before I killed it, it told me that for years, a hunter never suspected. All because of Hanji... she knew every little trick and saw through every little veil. When I came home... Petra didn't come out to greet me, though the lights were turned on inside the house.

Leaving everything in the car, I ran into the house, calling her name.

I see her sitting at the table with Hanji sitting next to the fireplace. She didn't budge when I burst into the room. "Petra, what's going on?"

She got up from her seat, sighing softly. "You remember what I said about us needing to talk?"

"I do." She's hardly this serious. When she is... words can't describe how my heart feels. "Is this what I think-."

"Levi, I know you're saving the world. Protecting innocent people from all those werewolves. I love that. That was one of the things that I fell in love with you. But I want a family. I want to be married. I thought maybe a few years together and you might change your mind. But you haven't. I'm sorry, Levi."

I closed my eyes, sighing softly. She had been giving me hints about wanting a family, but I didn't want to give into it. If I convince her to stay, that means having a child and being married. She never wanted to hunt werewolves with me... and she's safer at home than with me. A part of me said that I wanted to convince her to stay, but I know that there was nothing I can do to make her stay.

"I'll leave tomorrow morning."

"That soon?"

She nods her head. "I'm sorry it was so sudden. I can't do it anymore. But I don't want to leave you behind. I know you just came back home, so I don't want to leave you just yet. But tomorrow, I'll leave. I'll just sleep in the guest room." Petra began to walk upstairs, "Dinner's all ready done. Goodnight, Levi."

"Goodnight."

I hear her light footsteps echoing upstairs before a door closed. I looked towards Hanji, seeing her bowing her head low.

"You can transform now. She's not coming down." Hanji jumps up from her spot, and I watched her transform. "Just keep your voice down. Did you eat already?"

Hanji nods her head, "Yeah, I did. I'm... I'm sorry for what happened between-"

"It's not your fault," I say to her, sitting down at the table with the already made dinner. For Petra's last night, she made me my favorite meal: chicken curry. Even when she's leaving me, she's still thinking about me.

Hanji sits next to me as she just stares at me. "How long have you guys been together?"

"As a couple? 6-7 years... I can't remember. We met in high school."

"You're like... 26?"

I nod my head. "Yeah. I am. She's a few years younger than me. 23." I smiled a bit before eating the curry. "Hanji, did Petra say anything else for her reasons to leave me? Aside from me not proposing to her and not having children?"

Hanji shook her head, "That's it. Why do you not want to have children with her? She is your mate and you can only mate with her-."

"Werewolves and humans are different. We can have more than one partner in our life."

"Whoa... is that so? I never knew that... I thought I know everything about humans since I live with them... hm... could you teach me things about how to be more human? It's fascinating." Hanji clasps her hands and tucks them under her chin as she smiled at me. "Is it okay if I can learn these human secrets that you hold?"

"Weird," I whisper under my breath, "Fine. But you'll still tell me about the difference between these two types of werewolves?"

"Of course. That original deal is still up." She smiles, laying her head down on the table. "How was it? The job, I mean."

"You were right. I had my doubts but... you were right. Even I saw that I would've brushed it off. How did you know?"

She sits up in her chair, sighing a bit. "I've seen it a lot. Sometimes we would travel around for a bit or when a werewolf, just like him, comes into our territory, we grow suspicious. Those are experienced ones. Either they had their pack wiped out and they survived or they were raised like that... either way, they're very careful with their tracks."

"Like Dirk."

Hanji's back stiffened when I mentioned his name. She nods her head as she slowly relaxed. "Yeah... yeah, just like him. That's why you never found his pack before. They have human hearts as a delicacy. Almost like a desert. And when they do hunt for humans, they go to where it'll blend in with real animal attacks. Then, they'll rip up the body. So it never attracts hunters like you."

"How do you know this?"

"One thing about those types of werewolves," Hanji leans towards me, lowering her voice, "they are very prideful. They say these things as if it is a fun game. Like hunting for food- they enjoy it. Of course, they don't take trophies- at least most of them. So when Dirk's pack took me in so Dirk and I can become mates, they told me everything that they wanted to do. Of course, I hated it."

"And you can tell the difference between animal attacks and werewolf attacks?"

"Most of the time, I can. But to tell for sure, I can smell their scent at the scene. Despite the human blood and all, I know what a werewolf smells like."

"And we smell?"

"Yes. Not like gross scent. It's like... a personalized scent. For Petra, she smells like honey. For you... it's a bit weird, but you smell like a wind on a field."

I chuckle a bit, "That has a scent?" Hanji nods her head. "Huh. What do you smell like?"

"I haven't personally smelled my scent. But my pack has often told me I smelled of flowers." Hanji smiled softly. "Which is weird because when I was young, I used to play in the mud. They always knew who was who based on our scents. Always said I was a flower in a meadow or a field. My brother, Axel, smelled of birch tree bark. Strange, isn't it?"

"No one knows how these scents are personalized?"

Hanji shook her head, but a smile grew on her face. "No, but I would love to know the answer. Everyone has always been wondering what each other scents were. A myth was raised among our people- our scents can determine our mates. Sometimes, the scents that go together are often similar."

"Huh. Interesting."

"But no matter what... the scents linger until something washes it away. That or time passes. After Petra leaves, her honey-like scent will still linger."

"I guess that's one thing that I'm glad I'm not a werewolf," I chuckle, telling her the truth. I can't imagine having the pain of smelling your ex's scent in the house you owned with them. I guess it makes it easier for werewolves like Hanji... she only gets to have one mate.
