Chapter 6: Loneliness

Hanji's POV

The next morning, Levi had me jump into the backseat of his car an hour after the sunrise. Levi didn't talk to me the entire time we drove to his house. I heard his private conversations with his girlfriend, Petra... and I know that he planned to show me her as a wolf... a pet. I can't live as a house pet... but it's only until I find my pack again.

Even though I confessed to being a werewolf, Levi didn't treat me any different. He still gave me food- nothing less than what he gave me before. That's good. But he doesn't talk to me. We barely made any stops. He probably did, but I was asleep. All he asked was for me to keep an eye out when it grows dark and he's asleep. I could tell he doesn't trust me, but he trusts me enough to keep him safe at night when he's vulnerable.

Days passed, and I know we were almost to his home. I could smell the place faintly of Levi's scent... and another scent... one that smelled of honey. "Levi! You're back!" She says to him, smiling as her orange-like hair bounced.

Levi opened his arms, welcoming her. They shared a small kiss... something that I turned away from. What is Levi going to tell the one he loves about me?

Looking back to them, I don't see the woman looking at me with disgust. She clicks her tongue, and Levi had a stern smile on his face. He didn't tell her about me... I quickly jumped out of the car, running towards Petra. I felt my leg sting a bit, but I kept it close to my stomach.

"She's a beautiful wolf..." Petra gently scratched behind my ears. "Are you sure we can't keep her for too long?"

"She's a wolf, Petra, she can't be domesticated for too long."

"Well, that's alright. She'll keep my company while you're off doing your hunter's work-."

"No," Levi says sternly, "I don't think it's a good idea to keep her with you-."

"Levi, it's lonely here." Petra sighs, crouching next to me. She continued to scratch behind my ears as she spoke. "I need someone to comfort me when you're gone. And since you don't want to marry me or have kids yet, I want this wolf to be with me."

Levi stayed silent. When I saw his silver eyes, I see him shake his head, "Fine. But every once in a while, I'll take her with me, okay?"

Do I blame him? He doesn't trust me... but if I'm still here and they have children... I'm not going to stay here. The werewolf pups that I used to babysit were not fun. Always grabbing my tail whenever I was a wolf- hell, they even bit me with their sharp teeth. But there would be human children, not werewolf ones.

"No dog food?"

"It seems she rather eat human food than dog food. Must be a wolf thing." Levi scoffs, carrying his bags into the house.

"Aw..." Petra kisses the top of my head as she guides me inside. "I think we'll be best friends in the meantime. I wonder if wolves can eat spaghetti for dinner. Levi says I make the best one."

When night fell, I couldn't bear myself being in the house while they were off mating. I trotted outside, laying myself on the wooden patio. The air here seemed so nice... so nice that I didn't mind it one bit. I wouldn't mind sleeping in this place... if I was a true wolf and not a werewolf.

Sometimes, I hate being a werewolf. Why do I get to be stuck in between two creatures? I want to be human... to live just like them without the wolf aspects. But sometimes, I love being on 4 limbs, running around in the forest with the young pups. Everyone leaves you alone when they see you... thinking they might be killed.

I miss my pack...

I closed my eyes until I was woken up by Levi. "The hell are you doing out here?"

Sitting up, I transformed back to my human form, not looking at him. "I can't stay in there. I'm just... an outsider. You're happy with your girlfriend... and I'm just a stranger who is there to watch. It's creepy for me... I don't want to be there." If I didn't know better, I sound jealous. "Sorry, Levi... I just want to go home."

Levi sighs heavily, sitting next to me. "I'm sorry. If it makes you feel better, I won't do it when you're around."

"You sound forgiving. Completely different when you were about to stab me in the heart with a silver dagger. Why the change?"

"I thought about it for a while... you were with me when the full moon was up. You didn't go berserk and kill me. Maybe it's because you saved me instead of letting me die to that werewolf. Maybe it's because you tried to get me to leave the motel before they came. I don't want you near Petra... you can smell if someone has a scent on them, right?"

"I do."

"I don't want to leave you with her just in case werewolves come to my house and kill her. Even though you can give some protection... it's complicated.."

"No, I understand." I looked to him, giving a soft smile. "You love her... you want to protect her. I understand that part. The sooner I leave, the better, right? You can love Petra, marry her, have children with her... and I get to go back home to my pack. A win-win situation, right?"

"I guess so. The werewolves I kill aren't like you... they kill humans. I call them monsters. But you... even though you're a werewolf, you don't kill like them. You're... almost human."

"I've been living as a human for years."

"Why were you a wolf when I hit you?"

I chuckled at that, looking towards my injured leg. "Dirk and I... we were told to be mates on that night. I couldn't handle it. I ran. Wolves are faster than humans. I just left their little den and I was tired. My mistake. You hit me."

"I never apologized to you about that, huh?" Levi gives a soft chuckle. "I'm sorry for hitting you."

"You could've left me to die too. I heard that vet. Some of those were part of my pack. They didn't dare to eat humans' hearts just to heal from their injuries. It was painful to see. But... thank you. Thank you for not killing me or leaving me out there to die."

"It doesn't sound that good, but I was debating on leaving you or taking you to the vet."

"Why?"

"I know that some animals that after being hit, they are in pain and they need to be killed to give them a merciful death. I didn't know if your case was that bad or not. So... yeah. I'm sorry for hitting you. But if I didn't hit you... I'm not sure if those werewolves would've been after me."

I shook my head, smiling softly. "I doubt they would've come after you. But I do know one thing... you probably prevented a marriage tie between those werewolves and my people. Who knows what kind of werewolf would've been made between the two."

"I forgot what happens if you merge those two."

"With my genes, the werewolf could only feast on human food. That way... that way..." I thought about how my pack survived and others like me hid with the humans. How long it took to get hunters away from us... and I heard that it was painful for my ancestors to eat human food just to subside their desires to eat hearts.

Levi gently nudged me, begging for me to go on.

"That way hunters don't hunt them. They can eat hearts, but not go berserk. My people don't transform during the full moon. If a child like them doesn't transform during the full moon, they have absolute control over their transformations. They are more controlled. But they can eat hearts too. They can regenerate just like those murderers."

I look to Levi, feeling myself boil with anger.

"Levi, it's dangerous. Those two types of werewolves cannot mate to have those kinds of werewolves. They are dangerous. They'll put your race in danger. And you hunters will be hunting every kind of werewolf... even my people. The ones that have never eaten a heart... ones that never killed a human. Even if we accidentally kill them, we exile ourselves or we starve ourselves. We don't want to bring any attention to us. I will help you find those murderers... as long as you never hurt my people."

"I promise, I won't. Meeting you..." Levi scoffs, looking up to the sky. "I didn't know there were two different types of werewolves. I thought there was only one type... the ones that kill."

"I promise you, there's a lot about werewolves you don't know."

"Will you teach me about them? I want to keep an eye out for werewolves that don't hurt humans... werewolves that are like you. I want to avoid them. Yet, I want to learn more about the werewolves that kill humans. I want to know how to find them quicker to prevent more people dying."

"I can teach you that, Levi..." I smiled, "Thank you..."

Suddenly, I don't feel lonely anymore...
