Chapter 46: Morning Bonds
Levi's POV
I gently put Raven down in her playpen in the kitchen. We usually have this area to keep her there since we don't want her out of sight. I began to mix the pancake batter, seeing Raven smiling a toothless grin.
"What? Wanting to eat pancakes? You have an appetite like your mother. One day, you'll be asking for pancakes every morning when you're able to eat solid foods."
As I was frying the pancakes on the stove, I felt some sort of eyes on me. I think I'm grown to detect someone staring at me after hunting werewolves. Quickly, I turned around and saw his little face as Klaus. I sigh in relief, beckoning him to come.
"It's okay, you can come here. I can show you how to make cook the pancakes if you want."
The boy comes to my side, peering at the baby in the playpen. "Baby..."
"Hm? Yeah, that's my daughter, Raven. You can wave to her. It's fine."
As I finished the first pancake, I tossed it onto a plate and placed it on the table. After Klaus did a small introduction to Raven, he stared at me weirdly. Whenever I looked at him, he darted his eyes away, not wanting to make eye contact with me. But I could tell he was hungry... the way he was looking at the pancake.
"You can go eat, Klaus," I say, sliding the syrup against the wooden table. "Forks are right here."
He murmurs, "Thank you," to me before grabbing a fork and gobbling the pancake down.
"Is your dad strict?"
"S-Strict?"
"He has a lot of rules."
Klaus nods his head, "Meanie."
He finished the pancake quickly and I gave him another slab of pancakes. He must've eaten at least 3 of them before slowing down on the 4th. This boy probably didn't have any seconds at his old place... I'm glad Petra took him with her.
On a separate plate, I began to stack 3 pancakes for Hanji as Klaus spoke to me, "Who's pancakes are those?"
"It's for Hanji. Is your mom awake?"
Klaus nods his head, "Bathroom."
"Okay then."
Minutes later, I made plates for myself and Petra as I see Klaus laying his head on the table. He jolts awake as Raven began to cry. Dropping everything for her, I quickly picked her up as Klaus had covered his ears with his hands, trying to keep the sound of a crying baby out of his head.
Gently, I bounced her in my arms as I reach for the bottle of milk in the fridge. "It's alright, it's alright," I say to her as I ran the bottle under hot water in the sink. Every few seconds, I dropped a drop of milk on my arm, feeling its temperature. Once it was warm enough, I turned the water off and dropped a few drops of milk on Raven's lips. She slowly stopped her crying as she opened her mouth and sucked on the bottle.
I sat down at the table, cradling the infant in my arms. I can't understand how Hanji does it... feeding Raven with her breast. I've seen Raven biting down on the nipple of the bottle... and I wonder if it hurts. Hanji takes it in stride, not showing a bit of pain when she feeds Raven. Even though she doesn't have teeth, I know it's below her gums and they will slowly sprout when she grows older.
"Klaus," I say, pointing upstairs with my head, "Can you go upstairs and wake up Hanji?"
He nods, slowly getting off the chair and waddling upstairs. I never expected the words, "Pretty doggy!"
"Yeah, pretty doggy- wait, what?!" I jolted up from my chair and ran to where he was. Raven still held onto her bottle of milk as I ran. "Klaus, wait!"
I see Klaus and Hanji's wolf form... Klaus was holding her head in some sort of choke. Her face had this, help me look. I couldn't help but stifle a laugh. "A cute doggy! Mr. Levi has a cute doggy!"
"Yes, I do..." I mutter, sighing. How am I going to tell him that the wolf and Hanji are the same?
"So pretty!" He tugs her head a bit, and I could hear Hanji whimper in pain. Klaus then saddles himself on Hanji's back, "Giddy up, doggy! Let's go!" He pulled on her ears as he hit her on the side. Then, I somewhat lost it.
"Klaus, enough," I say sternly, seeing the joy leave his eyes. "You're hurting her."
"S-Sorry..." As he was getting up, he accidentally stepped on her neck. I would've snapped at him the same way if some tiny human stepped on the back of my neck.
Hanji showed her teeth, but slowly hid them as she knew it was just a child. But that bark scared Klaus to the bones.
"What's going on?!" I hear Petra running down the hall, seeing Hanji's wolf form and Klaus. "Klaus, what happened?!"
"M-Mr. Levi said I was hurting the pretty doggy... she bit at me."
"Did she bite you?!"
Klaus shook his head, "Mommy, I'm sorry... I hurt the pretty doggy."
Petra took a deep breath, sighing heavily. "You have to be gentle, okay? I know you haven't seen a doggy for a long time, but you need to be gentle." She then turned to me, "Thankfully it was just Hanji and not some stray wolf..." Her eyes slowly went down and she saw Raven. I could see a sorrowful smile pop on her face as her eyes filled with sadness. "Is this your daughter?"
"Yeah, this is Raven." I turned back to Hanji, seeing her defeated. "Petra, can we explain to Klaus about werewolves? Or is it too early?"
"Maybe he should know... but knowing him, he would want to be like one."
"We can say something about it."
* * *
We had to explain to Klaus about werewolves. But we made it seem like a super-secret spy thing since that's the only way to explain why it had to be secret. As Petra said, he was into the idea of turning into a wolf at will and asked if Hanji could transform him.
"A-Ah... well..." Hanji looked up into the ceiling, thinking of what to say. "You have to be older," she finally says. That's untrue because Hanji explained to me before that you can turn into a werewolf at any time. "To be a super-secret werewolf agent, you have to be older."
"I am older!"
"You have to be at least 18 years old," she replies, slowly going along her lies, "and if you still want to try to be a super-secret werewolf agent, we can have that talk again later."
"Promise?"
"I promise." Hanji sealed it off with pinky swear.
I took a quick peek at Petra and saw her staring at me again. "What's wrong?" I asked.
"You have something on your neck. It wasn't there yesterday."
"It's fine, don't worry about it." Knowing her, she won't stop worrying about other people. That's why I fell in love with Petra... but I can't be with her. Not anymore. Hanji's my present and my future. Petra was only my past.
