Chapter 30: Choices
Hanji's POV
"A-And you're sure about these results...?" I whimpered, shaking my head with disbelief. "It's not like some sort of false positive?"
"Ms. Zoe, we've run these tests more than once. I do not doubt that you are pregnant." I kept quiet, not knowing what to say as the doctor continued to talk about confirming the tests. "Ms. Zoe, according to the law in this city, you have about a month to decide whether or not you want to keep the baby."
"A month...?" Why is the time for that so short...?
"Yes, ma'am."
I kept quiet for a bit, remembering Petra... why did I think of her...? Maybe because it was the topic of children that made me remember her. She left Levi because he didn't want children... and I love Levi... I don't want him to leave me when he finds out that I'm pregnant.
"Can you email me about aborting the baby?"
"I can. It's the same email that you've given to me, correct?"
"That's correct."
"I'll also send information about keeping the baby. Just so you can see some pros and cons on both sides. Was there anything else you want to discuss?"
I shook my head, clenching my fists. "No, I don't. Thank you for your time."
We concluded the call as I walked back into the kitchen, solemnly cracking eggs into a mixing bowl as the pan began to heat up on the stove beside Levi's kettle. My eyes kept glancing at my phone, waiting for the email to pop up.
In the end, I was frying the eggs in the pan as I had time to rest my free hand on my stomach. I still had a flat stomach and I was still in the early stages of my pregnancy, I knew I shouldn't be showing... but the fact that I had a child in my uterus... slowly feeding on the nutrients that I digest.
What am I going to do...?
The right thing is to tell Levi, that's a given. I've seen stories where the woman never told their significant other about them being pregnant and having an abortion... which usually led to an unstable relationship. Knowing that Levi's all I got... I can't lose him. But what am I going to lose him to?
Would I lose Levi to me being pregnant? What about me aborting the baby without his knowledge? What to do... what to do... what to do...?
"Hanji," I jerked my head back to see him in a fresh pair of clothes, "Didn't you hear me earlier?"
"You were calling me? Sorry, I didn't hear you..."
Levi walks up to me, using his tippy toes to kiss my forehead. "Everything's good?"
I sighed, reluctantly nodding my head. "I-It's fine..." My phone buzzed with the arrival of the email from Dr. Marrin. With another sigh, I confessed. "No, not really... Levi, do you love me...?"
"I do. And it doesn't matter if you're pregnant or not, I'll always love you."
"H-Huh...?" Our eyes met as I saw him smiling gently... the side I always loved. "Wait, you knew? How did you know? You were upstairs the entire time-."
Levi walked over to his kettle, checking the water if it was boiling. "The name of the clinic sounded familiar... so I looked it up."
"Levi, believe me, that I only went there to check for birth control pills-."
"I believe you, Hanji. I do. But the urgency of the call... I assumed that it was because something happened with the results. If I was any stupider, I thought you would get rid of the baby before I knew about it."
"If I'm honest, I was debating whether or not to tell you." We shared a small chuckle as Levi returned to me, gently holding my stomach. "Wait, are you saying we should keep the baby? I thought you didn't want children."
"I don't think I'm ready," He confesses, "but I've seen the way how you interacted with the children in your pack. You definitely wanted kids at one point. Why did you lie to me about not wanting kids?"
"I..." I sighed, remembering his ex. "I didn't want to be like her..." I whispered, hoping Levi knew who I was talking about. "I love you because it's you. And it'll be difficult to go hunting if we have a child to take care of. What are we going to do? I don't think it's fair to the child to take them with us whenever you have a case. And I don't want to stay home every single time you leave."
Levi kissed the top of my breasts, resting his head there. "I was thinking we can take them to your pack. We'll take turns leaving for cases. If it comes down to it, we can move closer to your pack."
"You mean it?" Levi nods his head. "Who are you and what have you done with Levi? What changed your mind about children? Before, you were adamant about not having any of your own. Now... you're changing your mind?"
He pulls away to look at me. "You honestly think that I'm an impostor? Besides, I never really handled kids before, but your packs' pups are somewhat... respectful and responsible. As long as our child doesn't become an entitled brat, then it's fine."
"Children are going to take up a lot of energy."
"Sex takes a lot of energy. I think we can handle it."
"Levi, those are two different things. Don't compare the two of those things!"
Levi rolled his silver eyes, "Whatever. But I mean it... I wouldn't mind having a baby."
