Chapter 2: Adoption

Levi's POV

Spending the next afternoon researching and hunting for some answers to my questions, I ended the afternoon by stopping by the vet's office to see that wolf one more time. The vet jumped out of her seat when I walked into the building, having a concerned look on her face.

"Mr. Ackerman," She began, pointing to the back of the building, "if you're here to see the wolf, she ran away."

"How?"

"I don't know. I locked up the building and locked her up in a kennel. But when I came to work this morning, she was gone. It was like I didn't lock her up. I'm sorry- huh?" She quickly walks past me, and I didn't notice the wolf behind me.

Seeing her in the daylight, I saw that she had dark brown fur and strange brown eyes. A small black streak ran from her head to her tail. On her face was a black spot on her left eye. Her left hind leg was lifted and tucked underneath her belly, careful to not step on her broken leg.

"How the..."

The vet began to give the wolf a quick examination, sighing in relief. "Well, I don't see any fleas on her, nor does it seem like she hurt. I'm surprised she came back around." The vet began to gently grab the wolf by her scruff, but the wolf immediately laid down on the ground. "What? Come on, girl, you can't stay outside. You're still hurt."

"She doesn't seem to want to move," I say, kneeling next to the wolf. I scratch behind her ears, and she closed her eyes with content. "Well, I just came by to check on her. I might not be able to come tomorrow-."'

Immediately, the wolf stood to her feet, except her injured one, and she starts to bark at me.

"If I could speak their language, I would guess she wouldn't want you to leave." The vet chuckles to herself. "Dogs and wolves like that are loyal to the ones who save them. You're not going to stay around this area, right? Since you're just investigating the murders, you wouldn't come back here to see her, correct?"

"Yeah, but-."

The wolf barks again, giving a slight growl.

"What can I do with her?"

"Adopt her?" The vet raised her shoulders, and the wolf doesn't bark at her. "Best bet. I wouldn't charge you for adopting her. Normally for a wolf... it depends. I'll register her as some sort of husky for you to get away with. Only if you can stop the murders here."

"I promise I can do that."

"Great! Let's get through the paperwork then."

What am I going to tell Petra?

"Now, a brown husky..." The vet began to type at her computer, glancing down to the wolf that sat outside of the building. "Female... uhh... name. What do you want to name her?"

Thinking about it, I remember Petra always wanted to have a pet named Annabelle. Instinctively, I said the name, "Annabelle. But I might just call her Belle for short."

"Understood."

More minutes began to pass until it came to install a chip into Annabelle. Annabelle did not like that. She tried fighting off both me and the vet, but soon enough, we got the chip inside of her. All of my details were in it, just in case the wolf gets lost.

Based on what the vet found out last night, the wolf isn't allergic to anything. She seems to be a healthy wolf with nothing to worry about. Although the X-ray was acting up last night, Annabelle shouldn't have any underlying issues. With all the paperwork completed, I took Annabelle back to my car, figuring out what to eat for a late lunch.

Annabelle and I passed a few fast-food places until she started barking. I pulled on the side, wondering what she was barking at. It was a burger fast-food place, only found in this town. Said to have the best burgers in the country.

Yeah, right.

"What, you want a burger?" I scoffed, seeing her dip her head like a nod and her tail wagging. "What kind of wolf are you?"

She gives one bark, and I gave in. I guess she eats human food. I wouldn't blame her. I don't understand how one can simply eat dog food. How small it is... how brown it usually is... how hard it is... and most of all, how much it sticks. I don't know if dogs see it as delicious, but I'm sure that I would eat dog food- even if someone paid me a thousand dollars to eat one kibble.

Feeling that I wouldn't want to leave the motel for dinner, I bought 6 burgers. I hope that's enough. Coming back to the car, I see Annabelle sitting up in the backseat. She tilted her head as I opened one of the burgers before gently giving it to her.

"Eat," I say, watching her slowly chomping the burger to nothing. I didn't take a bite out of my burger when Annabelle finished hers. "I need you to be a good girl, okay? I got some hunting to do."

She whimpers softly as she sniffed my hand.

My phone begins to ring as I see Petra's name popping up on the screen. I answer, still thinking about how to tell her about the wolf.

"Hello?"

"Levi, I got a notification about some sort of adoption thing. Did you adopt a dog?"

"Technically, she's a wolf-."

"A wolf?!"

I pulled the phone away from my ear as Petra shrieked a bit. Once she was done, I put the phone back to my ear. "Petra, just hear me out, okay? She's just going to live with us, and she's harmless."

"What's her name?"

"Annabelle."

"Oh... that's-."

"What you always wanted to name a pet, right? Petra, I know we're not married and that we're just girlfriend and boyfriend, but I wanted to do something nice for you. She's a very pretty wolf and I think you might like her. She's labeled as a husky, but she's a wolf."

Petra grumbled a bit, "Alright, fine. How's the hunt going? Finding any werewolves?"

"Werewolves? No, but I'm just following up on the murders. It's werewolves by the look of it. They said it started with a few deaths before the full moon, but now, it's like a feast for these werewolves."

"A feast, huh? Sounds like they're celebrating something."

I nodded my head, "Yeah, sounds like they are. Anyways, I'm going to go scout for some possible locations for these werewolves. I'll call you tonight, okay?"

"Okay. Goodbye, Levi."

"Goodbye." I hang up and once I do, Annabelle began to whimper. "What's wrong? Need your pills?" She continued to whimper, and I feel like she knows something is wrong. "Listen, I need to do some work. Can you stay quiet in the car while I go?"

Annabelle continued to whine, and I had to leave her alone in the motel room. I hope she doesn't wreck anything.
