Chapter 18: A Change of Heart

Hanji's POV

I smiled, running into Erwin's arms. "Hanji... it's  you..." We hugged for a bit before I turned back to Levi with a smile. "I can't believe it... you're here... we thought we lost you. How did you...?"

"Levi helped me find you guys."

"Levi?" Erwin glared at him, looking him up and down with his sapphire blue eyes. "He's smaller than I expected."

"I'm standing right here and I can hear you perfectly fine." He began to growl, but his eyes settled when they met mine. "I guess you're back with your pack, Hanji-."

"You know about us?" Erwin raised an eyebrow. What am I supposed to say to this?! Something bad's going to happen... I know it... but what? "How do you know about us?"

Levi raised an eyebrow as he moved his hands away from his belt. "I kill werewolves that harm humans."

I could tell that Erwin was ready to attack, but I held him firmly in place. Erwin takes a few deep breaths before nodding his head. "I see. Although I can't tell if you were using Hanji to get to more werewolves to kill at once or if you're honest."

"Erwin, he's honest, trust him. He helped me get away from Dirk and his pack. I owe him my life." Why did I sound so sad saying that? Is it because I know that we're going to be apart now? "Trust me, okay? He's good. He's not going to harm any werewolves unless they are rouges. Understand?"

"Fine." Erwin loosened up and he began to walk towards Levi. "Thanks for bringing her back safe and sound. You can leave-."

"I promised that I'll show my pack to him," I say to him, "Please. And besides, we drove for a long time getting here. We're both exhausted. I want to give some time before he does leave."

Erwin sighed, "Okay, fine. Everyone's staying at The Rosland Hotel."

"Rosland... Levi, didn't we see the hotel when we were driving into the city?" Levi gave a nod. "That's gotta be an expensive hotel... how did everyone afford to stay there?"

"When Adam lived here, he said he owned a few hotels. The Rosland Hotel was one of the ones he owned. When we retreated here for a place to stay, a few of his old friends gave ownership back to him. Now, he owns it. We don't pay to stay there. And..." Erwin glances towards Levi, who was still standing where I left him. "Any friend of Hanji's is a friend of ours. If you trust him this much, I shouldn't doubt you. You guys should be able to get a room there."

"We'll meet you there then," I say, quickly walking towards Levi.

"You're not riding with me?"

"I bet Levi has a lot of questions that he needs to be answered, so I'll answer them as we're on our way there. Besides... we have enough time to catch each other up."

Erwin nods his head, giving me one last smile. "Alright. And... Hanji? Welcome home."

I smiled at him before Levi and I got back into his car. We buckled up, and surprisingly, Levi was silent. Even when he was driving to the hotel, not a single word was uttered from his tightly sewn lips. It wasn't until we parked that he said something. And if I'm honest... my heart began to sink like a rock in a lake.

"I guess this is it then? You're back home."

"At least take a few days off..." I whisper under my breath, looking out the window. Though there was nothing out there but cars and wandering people, I couldn't look at Levi.

"A few days off? What for?"

"As I said before, Levi, I want to show you my pack. I want to teach you more about werewolves. And... it feels like it's too soon to part with you. That sounds so wrong..." I groaned, tapping my head against the window. "Before we get out there... please do me a couple of favors and keep your mouth shut."

"Afraid I'll say something?"

"In a way. Don't mention the fact that we met by you hitting me with your car. And... don't try to overreact. My pack used to have a few run-ins with werewolf hunters... and we do have to introduce you as one of them... just... try to be... slightly nicer than your usual self."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"I... just try not to brush them off too much. Okay? It's difficult to explain. And if anything, let me do the talking. Try to be vague with your answers and don't answer anything too detailed. Oh, and... try to be open."

Levi closed his eyes for a few seconds before nodding his head. "Okay. I hope your family has sleeping pills I can borrow for tonight."

"Didn't you say it was okay for one night?"

Levi rolled his eyes a bit as we exit out of the car. "I did. But it's just in case. Sometimes I can fall asleep, sometimes I don't. It's just as a precaution. But, let's get this over with. Hopefully, there's something to eat."

"Oh- before we go, help me carry the toys in for the pups."

Levi's POV

As much as I don't like the fact of being introduced to her entire family, I'll do it for her. I know she's very family-orientated... but she told me to be careful... and it's not a good thing to be a werewolf hunter surrounded by werewolves. I know that she says that these werewolves are good and never ate a human heart... but I'm sure there are at least a few of them who hate me for killing their kind.

"Miss Hanji!" I hear some high-pitch voices as we entered the lobby. A bunch of little children waddled up to her, jumping with joy. "You're here! You're here!" They all cried to her, smiling and giggling.

"I'm so sorry I was gone for so long... oh, and Briar, I'm so sorry I missed your birthday..." Hanji says, reaching into the paper bag of gifts in my arms. "Here, I got you a present. I remember you used to like reading books, right? Here- I saw it in a bookstore."

Hanji passes this children's book to Briar, and I saw this little girl's face light up with joy. "Ah! Thank you, Miss Hanji! Can you read it to me tonight?"

"Maybe tomorrow night, okay? I'm a little tired."

"Okay." Briar nodded her head as the other children gathered around Hanji.

"Don't worry, I have gifts for everyone!"

I thought that children were a bit weird. Messy little humans that are very grabby and annoying. That was one of the reasons why I didn't want to have children... one of the reasons why Petra left me. Seeing Hanji like this... handing gifts to the children as if she was Santa and giving gifts on Christmas Day.

Maybe I was a bit harsh on Petra... maybe a bit harsh on myself.

But most importantly... I'll stay here for a couple of days... just for you, Hanji...
