Chapter 15: Embarrassment

Levi's POV

For the next 6 months, we haven't found a werewolf case. I'm thankful for that... because learning about werewolves was interesting. Though she does tend to rant and go off-topic, she still makes a point. Then, sometimes she'll talk about her pack. She said about half were born into the pack as werewolves, while some were once humans that they turned into werewolves. She said that the humans gave consent to become werewolves because they fell in love with a few of her pure-breed werewolves.

Hanji told me that when we find her pack, she'll introduce a few people that were once human to me. Said that it'll be a nice way to see the difference between living as a human and as a werewolf.

With every passing day, I didn't think of Petra. From time to time, she asked if we could just be friends, but I never replied to any of them. I think I'm still healing from our breakup.

But if I'm healing from the breakup... is it natural to feel myself falling for Hanji? Every night when I fall asleep, I dream of Hanji in my arms instead of Petra. That night with the thunderstorm... I felt her weight against my chest and I listened to her soft snores. When she slept on me that night, I ran my fingers through her hair, taking out the tangles. I felt my heart skipping a few beats as I couldn't sleep that night.

Should I be ashamed of myself?

"I think I burnt it..." I turned to Hanji, seeing her hold up a badly charred slab of meat. "Sorry, I got distracted."

"It's fine. Should still be edible. What were you distracted by?"

Hanji looks out the window, and I knew what she was thinking about: her pack. "I haven't been looking for them for a while... we only looked for them when hunting the rogue werewolves... it's been 6 months, Levi... I should go out and look for them."

"We'll start tomorrow," I say, sitting down at the table, "I'm not letting you go look for them alone. We work together. That was the deal, right?" Why did I say that? I forced that out of me... I should've said something else... but what could I have said?

"Yeah... that was the deal..." She gave a weak smile before sitting at the table in front of me. She sighed, clasping her hands together. "I hope nothing bad happened to them..."

"I hope so too. After all, you said I have a lot to learn." Hanji begins to chuckle softly. "What? What did I say?"

"Nothing, Levi. It's just..." She shrugged her shoulders as her smile grew larger. "Well, reminds me of those humans who turn into werewolves. Once they learn of something, they say that."

"I hope that's not foreshadowing that you're going to turn me into a werewolf."

"Would you?" Hanji raised an eyebrow, "Would you want to be a werewolf?"

I shook my head. "I want to stay human. If I hadn't met you, then I probably would've said that I would never willingly turn into a monster. But because I have met you and you taught me more about werewolves, my answer would be... I want to stay human... because... it's a completely different life than I'm used to."

"I understand."

"Do you want to stay as a human or a wolf?"

"If I had to pick one?" Hanji chuckles, leaning back in her seat. "Living as both have allowed me to see what kind of life a wolf and a human lives. Life as a wolf is interesting... I love the ability to run quickly on 4 legs... to feel the wind on my fur when I'm running through the forest. It doesn't hurt my feet when I run on stones or trees. I feel powerful. But I do feel like I'm... somewhat limited. Poachers are constantly after wolves... and you don't want to be caught in one of their sanctuaries. Terrible place."

"You got stuck in one?"

Hanji gives a soft chuckle, covering her face. "I... It's embarrassing..."

"Tell me. It's not like anyone else is listening in on us."

"Well... okay."

Hanji quickly takes a new seat next to me, scraping the chair against the floor. "How did you get stuck in a wolf sanctuary? And why is it a terrible place?"

"One of these pups named Briar was playing around near a river... which is near the wolf sanctuary. She was one of those pups that didn't want to leave her wolf form after she figure out how to transform into one of them. My father told me I had to get her, so I ran to her in my wolf form to get her to go back into town."

Hanji looks down, continuing to cover her face.

"I smelled a human scent coming towards us. So I picked Briar up in my mouth by her scruff and quickly ran towards the town. I slipped and I had Briar run back home to get help while the humans capture me. It's very uncomfortable when humans are looking a wolf up and down. The fact they had to stick a thermometer up in my butt-."

"Okay, steer away from that. I don't want to hear anything about your butt."

Hanji chuckles softly, "Ah, sorry! But yes, it was very uncomfortable. They had me in this pen with another female wolf- not a werewolf. I couldn't do anything but walk around and sleep. But the food they gave to us was good. They tried to give me a mate or something... I think they named him Joshua."

"How long were you stuck in there?"

"About a week. My father came with my brother to fetch me. Claimed that I was their wolf and I escaped their grasp." Hanji then glared at me as she pulled her hands into a fist. "After they retrieved me, they told me that they found me the day I got admitted into the sanctuary... apparently my brother thought it was hilarious to leave me there for a week."

"Seriously? That's a shitty brother."

"I know! It was so embarrassing! My entire pack couldn't stop laughing about it! Turns out, my brother was the one who tried setting me up with that pure wolf! Everything was all a joke! All of it!"

As much as it seemed funny, I tried my best to not laugh.

Once Hanji calmed down, she gave a heavy sigh, almost like that entire time, she was speaking without breathing. Exhausted from her little memory rant, she smiled, "I believe Briar just turned 7. I missed her birthday last month... oh, do you think that when we find my pack, we can buy a few things for the pups? I want to give them something as an apology for not being there."

"I don't mind doing that."

Hanji smiles, getting a knife from the kitchen counter. "Alright, well, let's eat before it gets cold."

"Maybe we should order pizza instead."

"You know... that's not a bad idea, Levi..."
