Chapter 13: A Life for a Life

Levi's POV

We spent a few hours looking for the werewolves... and I learned to trust Hanji more. I know I should trust her, but I wanted to see it for myself. We explored every abandoned place- falling apart of well-kept. She always sniffed around as a wolf before transforming back to report that there is nothing there. Not a single trace of a wolf.

I gave in to the feeling to let her lead the case. She then tells me to go to the nearest forest entrance.

I follow her into the woods as she was a wolf. How quietly she walked over dead leaves and twigs as I crunched them beneath my feet. She walks a few feet ahead of me before I saw her body freeze. She growls softly as she turns around, shifting back into a human.

"They're here. It reeks of human blood... those scents I smelled at the scene of the crime... they're here. Not to mention, there are 4 other werewolves here- that's their pack. 9 total."

"9?" I sighed, readying my gun. "Okay, fine, stay back here."

"What?! No, I'm not letting you go into a pack of 9 werewolves!" She tries to stop me from going forward. "That's dangerous..."

"Stay. I got this. I handled more than 9 werewolves at a time, Hanji." I say to her as I walk towards their camp. As I walked ahead, I heard her sigh. I don't want her to get in harm's way. I don't want someone else to get hurt because of me. "I'll be back," I promised to her as I stepped into the werewolf's territory.

The second I walk into their camp, all 9 of them stood to their feet. Their muzzles were stained with blood. I would've thought they were regular wolves that recently got to their prey if it weren't for human tools next to their campfire. Their growls grew louder as they crept to me. Some barked, but I held my ground. The goal was to shoot their hearts... otherwise, they'll heal. A silver bullet to their hearts kills them instantly.

3 bullets left my gun and found a new home in 3 werewolves' hearts. Then, their attack happened. With 6 werewolves left, they pounced on me, snapping their jaws at me. I got a few scratches, but no bites. A single bite from a werewolf would be the start of someone's transformation into a werewolf. Claw marks from them don't count.

Then, a howl echoed through the forest, turning a few heads towards it. I saw her familiar wolf form by the entrance of their camp... Hanji...

She growled at them, baring her teeth. 3 werewolves lept off of me and ran after her. "Hanji!" I shouted her name, not knowing that I did that. Why did I call out her name?

Dealing with only 3 werewolves, it was easy to shoot them in the hearts. Then, I ran off towards Hanji- following someone's howls. The second I was able to see a clear shot of Hanji and the other werewolves, it seemed she had already killed them. Her fur was covered with their blood as her enemies were limp.

We just stared at each other before she hops into a sprint towards me. My body lost control as I just stood there, watching Hanji running towards me. Was it her? Or did some werewolf kill her and their wolf form looked similar to Hanji's? This wolf bared its teeth at me as they pounced onto me. When their paws landed on my body, pushing me down, I didn't notice another werewolf behind me.

Then, I knew for sure that the werewolf that just pounced on me was Hanji as she turned back into her human form. She cried with pain as she leaned her body against me. The werewolf that attacked both of us turned around, snarling. It began to run, which I quickly ended with my gun.

"Hanji!" I shouted, pushing her off of me so I could see the damage done to her. 3 long gashes were revealed from her right shoulder blade to the middle of her back. "Hanji... are you okay?"

"I-I'm fine..." I hear her trying to laugh. "D-Doesn't hurt at all... take me to the hospital... please?"

"Can't you turn into a wolf?"

"Ohh... right, let me turn into a wolf- are you stupid, Levi?!" She shouts as more blood began to sprout from her wounds. "It takes concentration to shift! This fricking hurts! It... it hurts..." She began to whimper, and I heard her cries. "It hurts..."

I can't take you to the hospital... I don't know how to explain abnormal claw marks on her back as she's covered with werewolf blood from her fight. I have to take her back to the motel and patch her up there. It'll be messy work, but it has to do.

"Hold on... don't fall asleep. Whatever you do, don't fall asleep."

Thankfully, I already had some medicine to kill the pain just a bit. The trouble was keeping her awake. After I took her to the motel, I quickly had to make a quick stop to get painkillers and other things to sew her wounds together.

When I came back, I saw her watching some sort of crime show as her back was covered with bandages.

"You're back..." She says softly with a smile on her face.

"Like I would leave. I also got dinner for us. But you're eating after I stitch your wounds, okay? And it will sting."

"Got a stick?" Hanji laughs softly, "Joking. I can handle the pain."

"If you're serious, I can go outside and find a thick stick for you to bite into as I clean your wounds."

Hanji shook her head, "I'm joking. I don't need a stick. Just... hurry it up, please. I'm hungry."

"Okay, okay."

A few hours passed as I stitched her wounds together. I felt creepy as I stitched together. She couldn't wear a shirt, nor a bra, so she was laying on her bed, naked from the waist up. I had to take a few breaks so she can have some bites of food. I couldn't let her suffer for hours of not eating. I hate that feeling.

But once I was done, I realized that blood was all over Hanji's blankets. "Sleep on my bed," I say to her, starting to clean up the mess that I made.

"A-Are you sure?"

"I'm sure. Try to get some sleep, okay? Don't toss- otherwise, you might open your wounds and you'll bleed more. Then you might get an infection."

"Okay. I wish I could've gotten a shower..."

"I'll give you a bath tomorrow."

"So you can look at my body?"

"What? No. Because of the stitches, I want to make sure you don't open them while you're showering."

Hanji chuckles softly as I helped her to my bed. "If you say so. Goodnight, Levi." I took her glasses off and put them on the side. I didn't want to cover her back with a blanket, so I still left her practically naked.

I began to wash my hands from Hanji's blood, and I couldn't help but wonder why she saved me. Her body had no scars... and her first scars were from saving me. I can't help but feel that everyone gets hurt when they're near me. She could've died for me. I have to keep her away from me... to keep her safe. But I have to keep my promise to her. I have to. I owe that to her.

Twice... twice I hurt her. I'm never getting that out of my head.
