Chapter 10: Puppy Talk

Levi's POV

It was only a couple of days after she suggested we go on a case when she finally found one. We packed up a few things before we drove 6 hours to a slightly bigger town than when Hanji and I first met. She said that we had a standard case- a werewolf ripping hearts out of humans. Though she said that she doesn't know if it's one werewolf of a small pack.

Hanji was used to sitting in the back of the car as a wolf, but for some reason, I was compelled for her to sit in the passenger seat as a human. "Why?" She asked, tilting her head as a dog would, "Is there a specific reason?"

"No reason. I'm offering if you want to sit up here."

"Oh... okay." She quickly switches her seat from the back to the passenger. "Thank you,"

"No need for thanks, Hanji." I start the car up as I began to drive. "You're living with me now. Don't forget that. There's no need for me to think of you as someone lesser than me. Call it as... thanks. Thanks for taking care of me when I was busy sulking."

"It wasn't a problem. I guess it's the werewolf genes that I sensed your sadness. I'm new to this feeling of despair when a mate- sorry, significant other leaves someone. I'm still learning. I know I probably seemed cold or something else when you were grieving for her. I didn't understand. But now, I think I understand."

Hanji smiles softly, and she quickly made a suggestion. A suggestion that made me roll my eyes with annoyance.

"Can we get something to eat?"

"You're telling me you didn't eat breakfast?"

She turned her head to face outside the window as we got onto the main road towards the highway. "W-Well... uhh... I did eat breakfast. I was just wondering if we could get a milkshake or something. Something nice to enjoy on this long journey."

My eyebrow raised as she said that last part. "Excuse me? You're not the one driving."

"Would you let me drive?"

I sighed, wanting to facepalm myself in the head. I don't know if I should teach her how to drive while being at risk of her crashing or to never let her know. Weighing between those two options, I realized there was a third one- have someone else teach her how to drive.

"After this case, then I'll hire someone to teach you how to drive." I could hear her squeal with delight. "Then we can take turns driving."

"I promise I won't let you down."

"Just promise to not reveal yourself as a werewolf."

From the corner of my eye, I could see her cross her arms over her chest. "I know that, Levi. I'm not that stupid. I've been living with humans ever since I was born. I know how to control myself!"

"Speaking of that, what do your kind of werewolf babies look like when they're born? Do they have wolf features?"

"Hm... they look like normal babies. Oh, and that's another difference between those rouge werewolves and us tamed werewolves."

My eyebrow rose again as I listened to her little rant about werewolf babies. I didn't even need to turn on the radio to break the silence. Hearing her speak was... nice. Something that I can listen to that wasn't annoying like some radio talk shows. And I do learn from her rants. Her rants are something that I should never turn my ears away.

"This was from one of the female werewolves from Dirk's pack. One of her little pups ran into me, and I noticed that they were in their human forms. Now, I wouldn't consider this abnormal as I often dealt with werewolf pups in my pack as I act like their cool older sister. But the pups from my pack were 5 years old when they ran around as pups. The pups from Dirk's pack were less than a year old when they were running around."

"So they were born as wolves?"

Hanji nods her head. "Yeah. Because they take on more of a wolf-like personality, their females tend to stay in their wolf form while they are pregnant. And it's always dangerous to switch forms while pregnant. I think my aunt transformed a lot when she was pregnant. She lost her baby."

"Because she transformed too much?"

"Well, yes. The baby needs to develop in a certain form. And when you're switching from human to wolf, you're squeezing the fetus into a werewolf uterus when the mother turns into a wolf. And it needs to expand when the mother turns into a human. Once these queens-."

"Wait, queens?"

"Mhm. Well, in my pack, we call mother werewolves 'queens,' and I think it suits them. Don't interrupt me."

"Alright, alright."

Hanji clears her throat as she reaches for her water bottle. "Once these queens find out they are pregnant, they must choose which form to give birth in. Most of the time, we choose to be human when we give birth since that suits us more. We rather walk around as humans than be confined as a wolf where it's more dangerous to be a wolf. Think about it- how many wolves get plucked from their wild forests and put down into a wolf sanctuary. Imagine how those staff members react when they suddenly see a human in the center of a pack of wolves, holding a pup."

"And your pack's pups don't have any wolf qualities when they're born?"

"No. It doesn't grow in until they're like... 5 years old. When they start losing their baby teeth as humans, they have to go through another teething phase when they are a wolf because they need to get used to having fangs as a wolf. It's painful, but it's necessary."

"What happens if a pup doesn't turn into a wolf?"

"Like... if you force them to not turn? That doesn't happen. In the history of my pack, we never had a pup turn into a wolf." Hanji smiles softly as she leans towards me. "When we find my pack, I'll show you all of the pups that consider me as their big sister. Of course, they are skeptical to having hunters around... but once they know you saved me from death, they'll slowly accept you and only you."

I chuckle a bit, knowing that time is passing quickly when she's here. "Good to know they're not going to kill me without a warning."

"Oh, we're not going to kill you. Anyways, is it okay if I take a nap?"

"We just got on the road!"

"I know," She whispers, "but I'll be able to sniff out any danger."

"One, you're not a wolf right now. Two, the windows are up. How are you going to sniff any danger with those two points?!"

Hanji chuckles to herself as I noticed she's slowly drifting away to la-la-land. "You're right... but I don't care."

As she fell asleep, I thought about our conversation ever since we got on the road. We went from driving to werewolf pups. That hardly happened with Petra. Sometimes we stayed on the same topic for hours until we walked away to talk about something else... Hanji is a strange person... of course... she's a werewolf and not a human.
