Third Person POV

She had never seen a land so vibrantly green. Full of trees that brushed the edge of the sky and flowers all around. It was a beautiful scenery, unimaginable, even. A calm life in a cabin sounded ideal in this setting. However, monsters ruled this once quaint little land. Monsters that stole the lives of countless innocent people, who fought for their freedom everyday. That beauty all faded in an instant, one day, many years ago.

Flying through one of the large forests, a girl and her squad thought they were so close to victory. To freedom. A green cloaked figure had appeared alongside the squad, confusing them. Their first thought was that their Captain had returned, but unfortunately, it was the farthest thing from the truth. In the blink of an eye, one of their comrades' cables were sliced, sending him to hit a tree and die upon impact. The utter shock of the sudden loss of their friend sent them all into a state of panic. They tried their hardest to escape the figure in disguise but were soon met with the enemy they were battling all along.

Somehow, the squad managed to convince the youngest boy in danger to continue his escape while they took care of the threat at hand. A blonde helped alongside a (fellow) (hair color) girl in distracting the giant beast while the other two comrades came in to slice it's eyes, leaving it temporarily blinded. The four were able to work together without verbal communication on their attacks, going for the monster's shoulders to prevent it from protecting itself. Once it's arms had fallen to the sides, the previous blonde went in for the final blow to it's neck in order to finish it off. As he approached, one of the monster's eyes had regenerated quite early, snapping it's jaw around his body before spitting him back out.

The only other female on the squad, already close to the ground, retreated in order to get out of the monster's path. Still in shock and fear, the monster was able to catch up, stomping on her against a tree trunk. As the final two comrades witnessed the deaths of half their squad, the last man became outraged, and took the opportunity to dive for the nape of the monster's neck. That was when a hard crystal appeared on it's neck, defending itself from his swords. Now broken, the monster maneuvered to kick him towards the last standing female. The two went flying across the forest, forcefully hitting the ground as their blood mixed, and painted the surrounding landscape. Lying underneath his heavy, dead body, the girl had gone completely numb, wondering if she was still even alive at that point.

It wasn't until much later when their Captain had finally found the bodies of his squad. Slowly zipping past each corpse, he stopped and walked over to the man and woman, piled together. The man had been killed instantly, but the woman was still barely alive, on the brink of her slow, painful death. The Captain crouched beside her, his familiar cold eyes hard and hurt as he stared down at her. Just barely noticing his presence, he placed a hand on her bloody forehead, and gently slid it to the back of her head. Dull (color) eyes rolled his direction, mouth gaped open as more blood filled it. His other hand cupped her left cheek, and carefully turned her head his way. There was hardly any life left behind her eyes, but he knew she was still hanging on. Just for his sake. She always pushed through in order to fully serve him and her duty as a Scout.

"I'm sorry you had to go out this way." His deep voice filled her ringing ears, the words slowly processing in her dying brain. "Thank you for serving me to your final breath. You did your very best." He continued on, voice full of hurt but admiration for his squad's work, not only during this mission but previous ones. "I won't let your time here die in vain with our comrades. I promise that." Her eyes felt heavier than before, like she was beginning to drown, and could not swim. There was nothing she could do or say to halt the fading light of the only world she had known. "I won't let this war defeat us... I'll get us our freedom. For you." The world finally caved in as her Captain carefully pressed his forehead against her cold skin. Once he finally sat up, the vibrant (color) eyes he knew so well were shut, no longer viewing the beautifully evil universe. After her final breath, the Captain rolled the man off of her frail body to give them the rest they both deserved.

Jolting up from a plush mattress, covered by multiple blankets, a young woman breathes heavily in order to catch her breath. Sweaty and tear stained, she frantically scans the dark room, trying her hardest to recollect her previous memories. Deciding to look down at her lap, she wears grey sweats, and a black cami, nothing like the outfit in her nightmare. They didn't resemble the green cape the people were wearing. Calming down enough to recall most of the final moments of her dream, more tears begin to prick the corners of her (color) eyes. Sitting in an emotional silence, the rest of her memories sink in. It was the same dream she has once a week. Only this time, it played out until the very end.

Scrambling out of bed and grabbing a flannel off her desk chair, (f/n) throws a pair of shoes on before running out the door with her phone. Dialing a number into her phone with shaking hands, she runs down the stairwell in order to exit the building. As the phone rings, she stumbles a bit in her frantic escape. "(F/n)...?" A voice on the other end asks once it finally picks up. "Levi? S-Sorry for calling so late... can you meet me?" She asks with a strain in her own voice. "Yeah, why? Are you okay?" His exhausted tone makes her feel guilty, but she has to see him no matter what. It can't wait. The girl doesn't answer him, slamming her body into the exit door in order to get out onto the street, beginning to run towards his apartment in the pouring rain.

Levi does the same, completely leaving his phone on his nightstand while he runs out the door to find (f/n). Still running in the rain, (f/n) can hardly see past the continuous stream of tears falling from her reddening eyes, wiping them with the back of her sleeves, although the rain doesn't help at all. Off in the distance, (f/n) hears a shouting voice, growing closer, and closer, as her running begins to slow down. Stopping in her tracks to squint and search in the distance, a short, hazy figure comes into view. "L-Levi?" (F/n) croaks out, continuing the rest of the way in order to reach him. As the two are mere feet away from each other, the girl lunges at him, tightly holding onto his jacket between her white knuckles. "Geez- (f/n), what happened?" He asks, steadying themselves. "I-It's me... and... it's you!" She sobs into his chest, fingers not ever letting go of him. "What are you talking about?" The man looks down at her, swiping strands of hair off her face that stuck to her wet skin. "Y-You... and... Oluo... Eld... Petra... a-and Gunther..." She whispers, finally looking up to see his identical grey eyes from her dream.

Still confused, (f/n) removes her hands from his jacket to hold his face and head the exact same way he did to her before she faded. The action leaves him experiencing some sort of déjà-vu, eyes narrowing in concentration on the mysterious feeling. "I-It's you... my... our dreams... the w-walls... the forest... Cap... Captain Levi..." The distressed girl whispers, looking up at him from his chest, begging for him to remember. That's when the past memories start to flood his mind, all the missing pieces on his side click into place, making more sense. The forest, the naked giants, (f/n). "C-...Cadet?" The word slips past his lips, almost afraid to ask. (F/n) gently nods, sniffling as her own lips quiver. "I-I thought I'd never see you again..." Her voice is gentle, but still very sad. She had lost the battle, disappointing her Captain.

As everything sets in, the former Captain slowly presses his forehead against (f/n)'s, just like his past self once did before. The feeling sparks within the both of them, more tears filling her eyes if even possible. "This whole time... I've been waiting to do this." The man whispers as his thumb strokes over her damp cheek. Before (f/n) has they time to ask, his lips gently press against her own. In any life that they shared, they managed to find a way back onto each other's paths.
