Second Person POV

After the loss of his only two friends from their first expedition, you were the first person to be there for him. You had already been in the Scouts for about nine years prior to the recruitment of the gang trio, so you were already acquainted with death. Even though he was from the Underground and never showed an ounce of amusement or emotion, you still respected him like any other human being deserving of kindness. He was no different than anyone else.

You were cautious at first, obviously expecting a lot of hesitancy from him when you first reached out to him but you were ready for the hard work involved to simply gain his trust. Once he realized you were not going to give up, he lightened his tough exterior enough to try and accept your kind actions. Plus, you graduated top 10 of your class for strength and the Commander was thinking about promoting you to a Captain, so, Levi already had to respect you. You were dubbed Humanity's Second Strongest Soldier after Miche Zacharius. Even after successfully gaining Levi's trust over the next year, you kept up with the routine until one day he didn't bat an eye when you called him your friend. As shocked as you were that he didn't pull you into a headlock for such a label, you also felt relieved your efforts weren't being wasted.

However, this new friendship gradually blossomed into something much more. You practically considered him your best friend after a few months but eventually, you noticed yourself feeling funny around him. Your stomach would twist but your other friend, Hange, said it was just butterflies, as much as you tried to deny it. Not only that but sometimes you felt yourself blushing around him. The obscure sensations were just that. Obscure. There was no way you were developing a crush on your best friend. You would never admit to having feelings for the young man, who was only a year younger than you. You would rather lay to rest before confronting him about those thoughts.

Expedition Outside of Wall Maria, 845

Its the first expedition in a month and you're stationed alongside both your friends, Hange, and Levi. Even for as long as you've been serving, you still manage to get a bit anxious over leaving the Walls to fight. Hange poses no fear towards the Titans and Levi has God-like strength, easing your nervous state while you wait for the gate to open. All three of you are the best and the most likely to survive any expedition so there's nothing to be doubtful of. To you, this is just another day of work waiting to be over with. Before mounting your horses, you give Hange a hug then, turn around to throw your arms around Levi before he has the chance to shrug you off of him.

The first few seconds always go by in a flash, considering all the chaos in the air while soldiers cry out during the charge. Officially outside of the Walls and away from your home, everyone splits into their desired formation to cover as much land as possible. Following Hange, Levi rides beside you as you head south with the rest of your small squad.

It isn't long until you see a black smoke flare to your left, glancing over at your group to see who will carry the message. Hange is already fishing for a round, loading up their gun to shoot the black flare for the next squad to see. "Wherever this abnormal is, its not far, considering we're probably the second squad to signal." You mumble mostly to yourself, whipping the reins to ride faster. "Let's try to avoid it as best as possible." You announce to the other three, looking over your shoulder. Agreeing, your comrades all nod and follow along, continuing with the mission.

Fortunately, no paths have been crossed with the abnormal for the next ten minutes. Although, it is a bit nerve-wracking to be anticipating its sudden presence at the drop of a hat. Then, suddenly, an ambush of two Titans come charging straight for your squad. With wide eyes, you part your lips to react but Hange beats you to it. "Split up!" They shout, sharply steering their horse to the right. Turning the other direction, you just manage to dodge the two Titans, however, they turn around to chase you again. "I got the right one!" You hear Hange shout again, jumping off their horse to take down one of the Titans. Even though they love Titans, they know that now is not the time to be fawning over them.

Riding forward, you notice your other comrade jump off his horse to take down the other Titan. "Felix, wait-!" You call after him but its no use. The boy is newer to the Scouts, this only being his second expedition since being recruited. Just as you turn your head, your eyes grow even wider when you see the Titan leaning forward until it falls. Just before it lands on top of you, you dive off your horse, rolling down a hill at immense speed. Your uniform gets torn and roughed up from the ground, the Earth spinning rapidly around you, unable to focus on one particular thing.

Eventually, a rock stops your tumbling, popping your back from the hard force against it. Groaning in pain, you lie still for a second, incredibly dizzy and nauseous. By the time you slowly lift your head up, you see the Titan Felix attacked lying on the ground a few meters away from you, both achilles cut. As stupid of a decision he made, at least he took it down. Pushing yourself up off the ground, you hear someone in the distance. Snapping your attention back to the Titan, you realize the noise is coming from there. Your legs are already running towards it before your mind can realize, stumbling as you try to regain your balance on the way.

As soon as you round the Titan, your breath catches in your throat, spotting half of Levi trapped under the Titan's mass. Dashing towards the two pairs of him from your double vision, you slide to the grass, already shoving your hands under the Titan to try and lift it up off of him. "That stupid brat..." Levi mutters, trying to push it off of him as well. Without answering, you pant heavily, using all the energy you can muster to lift up part of the Titan's side. "Hurry it up, shithead! We don't have long until it regenerates! That brat didn't even get the nape!" Levi scolds the absent comrade. "I-I know, just shut up!" You shout, managing to get the Titan a few inches off the ground. "Crawl!" Your voice strains, hands bright red from the heavy weight on them. Levi grips the grass, attempting to pull himself out from under the Titan but his left foot is still caught. "I'm still stuck, idiot!" He curses. Rolling your eyes, you let out a cry as you find the ungodly strength from your adrenaline rush to get under the Titan yourself, pushing its stomach up over your head. "F-Fucking go, you... dumbass!" You huff, hardly any air left in your lungs at this point, completely out of breath.

Levi quickly pulls himself out from under the Titan, quietly seething now that the weight is off of him but his foot is definitely fractured from it. Rolling over to sit up, his cool grey eyes flicker in fear when he realizes how weak you are now. "Y/n!" He yells, quickly crawling back towards you, reaching a hand out. Looking up as sweat trails down your face, you try scooting a foot forward, slowly inching your way back out. Time is ticking before this Titan heals itself and gets back up to eat you both. You're just lucky that the hill made its arms snap so it can't grab you for a few more minutes.

Once you're almost out, you think about reaching out for Levi as well but one wrong move and you're as flat as paper. Thinking carefully, you try to make your next move logical but time beats your strength. Your arms tremble terribly under the Titan's weight, your right elbow bending the other way until you hear a crack. Crying out in pain, the Titan's weight caves in on that side until you're completely trapped under it, quickly suffocating.

"Fucking hell!" Levi curses. His fingers were so close to grasping your arm to pull you out but it wasn't enough. Frantically pulling the Titan back up, the young man yells in frustration and struggle, trying his best to free you before its too late. "Hang on! Stay with me!" He shouts, hoping you can hear. Without noticing, the steam surrounding the Titan's heels begins to dissipate, signaling its almost full recovery. Pretty soon, it will either get up or grab him. With no luck to get the Titan no more than a few inches off the ground, Levi let's go to grab his swords, shoving them deep into its skin to try and cut a chunk out to reach you.

Unfortunately, no hope is revealing itself in this situation. As the Titan finishes healing, Hange and Felix make their way down the hill after successfully taking down the first Titan. By the time they get to the bottom, the other Titan is pushing itself off the ground next to Levi, drooling when it sees the group of people. Hange snaps their reins, riding past Levi to grab him, using all their strength to pull him up onto their horse. "Where's Y/n?!" Hange asks, riding away to create distance before going back to handle the remaining Titan. "Turn around! We have to go back!" The man sits up, fiddling with his hand controls to return to you. "Levi, wait!" Hange orders, slowly climbing up onto their saddle to jump off.

Before they can, a different set of ODM Gear wires whizz past the brunette. "Felix!" Hange gasps, irritated with his irrational behavior. The younger man swings up towards the Titan's neck, readying his swords to take out the nape but something causes him to hesitate. Just before he notices, the Titan swats its hand at him, gripping onto him tightly. "H-Help!" Felix screams in horror once his mind can catch up and realize what's going on. Hange quickly takes off towards their comrade to rescue him but its far too late when the soldier goes limp in the Titan's hand, his upper body already between its teeth. "Dammit!" Hange curses to themself for being too late, swooping behind the beast to put an end to this chaos.

The ground rumbles as the Titan collapses, unmoving and finally unresponsive. By then, Levi rides back to Hange on their horse, not too far from where he had left you. Looking up, he notices your cape in the grass, whipping the reins to retrieve you. Hange looks over their shoulder, running after the man to catch up. When he's close enough, he jumps off the horse, landing on his good foot, falling over right in front of you. "Y-Y/n?" The raven pants, lying on his stomach as he reaches out to carefully lift your hood up. Face-down, he stares at your crushed, still body, heart stopping. No words can even begin to describe the amount of shock and disbelief he has in the moment. It seems as if his mind is running a million thoughts but also completely blank.

By the time Hange makes it, Levi's throat begins to restrict as his eyes never leave your soulless person. How could you, one of the strongest people here, be gone already? Just like that? It all happened so fast... he didn't understand. Hange's own breath hitches, immediately choking up when they realize the aftermath of the Titan attack. You had been friends with them for years now and as intimidating as you seemed, you were one of the kindest people they had met. Life never seemed to fail stealing the most beautiful and worthy people.

Hange slowly drops to their knees beside Levi as his hand rests on the back of your squished head, still quiet in shock. As tears roll down the brunette's cheeks, the raven drops his own head to the grass, eyes pinched shut as he begins to regret so many things. He shouldn't have been such an asshole to you for as long as he was, especially in your last few seconds. If only he was a better person instead of being so selfish and stand-offish. He should have been more helpful... and there for you sooner. However, everything has already happened and he cannot take anything back. He has to live with the fact that he never got to hug you back.
