Chapter Three: Commander Erwin's Secret

Author's Note: Hello, readers. I'm back with another dose of "Shock" for you. Get it? Okay, bad joke. Forget that I said that. Either way, happy reading!

You know that feeling of when you have some sort of secret, or you have some type of feelings, but you decide not to talk to anyone else about them? Which is naturally what you do if you have a secret. For some people, if they kept on pushing them down to the depths of their souls, then it would eventually get to a point where that secret or those feelings would never resurface, the host would be okay, and life goes for everyone. Those type of people are the lucky ones, in Levi's opinion. Because for the other type of people who hold these big secrets and/or feelings, they try to push the feelings down and go on with their lives, only for the secret or feelings to keep eating at their soul, tormenting their minds, spirit, and in rare and possibly dangerous cases, the body. Levi Heichou was one of those types of people, and though his body is still fine, his spirit and mind had a venom of painful memories and remembrances coursing through him. How it ends for those types of people is always a case of a variety of differences, for people always react to it in different ways. Levi didn't know what the end to this would be. No one would, until it came.

What was the secret, and what were the feelings (yes, he had both of those things), you ask? You honestly should know this, but in case you haven't been paying attention throughout the chapters, I'll just summarize it up for you. It all comes down to one word: Petra.

Levi had loved everything about her; Her kind heart, her cheerful outcome on things, her courageous soul, and everything about her, in general. The secret were the feelings themselves (there were sometimes cases where the feelings were the secret), but when his happy thoughts and memories of her would enter his brain, they would soon fade away and succumb to dark memories and feelings, like when he found her body, how he could never tell her he loved her, when he threw her body out of the cart to distract the oncoming Titan. Oh, God!!! That moment!! Why did he throw her body away!!?? And if only he knew what was going to come next: that meeting with her father.

Flashback

"Anyway, as her father, I think it's still too early for her to marry. She's still so young, with so much left to experience."

The rageful comments and the anger of the other civilians had droned out of Levi Heichou's brain. He could only think of the words Petra's father had just told him, and of Petra herself. Just when pain couldn't slap him across the face more than it did, it... well, you know. He couldn't take it anymore.

"Mr. Ral, I'm so sorry," Levi didn't feel those damn "I'm sorry" words were genuine enough, yet he said them anyway, "but Petra was killed during the expedition,"

Silence. It was what he was expecting. He was expecting the oncoming rage of sadness that would come from Petra's father after the silence. He would cry, then scream that he never should have let Petra join such a suicidal group. But he didn't.

"What? N-n-no, this can't be- this can't be true. She can't be gone! " Petra's father stuttered before looking Levi in the eye. Rivers were pouring out of his eyes, streaking his face, "Please."

"I-I-" Levi's tongue was glued to his mouth.

"Let me see her!" Mr. Ral cried out suddenly, "I won't care if her body is all broken and bloodied and if her limbs were eaten off or something. Let me see my precious baby girl!!"

"Sir, a Titan was chasing the chariots. We were in a field, so we couldn't kill it with 3DM gear. We had to throw off some of the dead bodies to distract it-" Levi immediately regretted saying that, but Mr. Ral had to know the truth, yet before he could say anything else, Mr. Ral cut him off.

"And Petra's body was thrown off. I understand you had to do what needed to be done," Mr. Ral managed to say through gasps and sobs.

After physically sobbing, and leaving silent tears to continuously fall, Mr. Ral handed Levi something. A white envelope, that was a bit wrinkled, so you knew that Mr. Ral had it for quite a while.

"Please, accept this, and read it," Mr. Ral asked, sobs threatening to overtake his speech again, "It is an unusual request, but do this for her. I beg of you."

Levi accepted the envelope before Mr. Ral took off, running back into the crowd. He put it in his pocket, making sure it was secured. He did not want to let this letter go. It was all he had left of Petra.

Her father's words replayed once again in Levi's head. I think it's still too early for her to marry. How long had she had feelings for him? Those words re-kindled another memory. One that would haunt him to the present day. That memory of the night before the Expedition that killed her. When she confessed her secret. The words kept replaying in his mind. I love you.

*Time skip* 9:00 p.m.

Despite the war having everybody's nerves shot, nighttime was one of the most peaceful moments anyone could have. The light of the white moon shining up above and pouring it's pearly light in the most perfect places for any individual, the sound of the night-animals playing a symphony of chirps and croaks, the breeze blowing through the leaves. Yes. Nighttime was destined to calm one's soul. However, when Levi Heichou would go to bed tonight, not even the night could calm down his nerves.

It all started a few minutes ago, when Levi was walking back to his bedroom from his office. He had finally finished those mountains of paperwork that seemed to be piling up on his desk. Why must they continue sending people damn paperwork? Levi thought to himself, muttering if he spoke aloud. Why in these times?

He was apparently thinking for so long that Levi didn't notice the oncoming figure in the shadows. That is... until he bumped into her. Literally.

The collision wasn't so big, but it was enough for the other figure to shout out a little "OW!" before landing her bottom on the wooden floor. Levi didn't shout out a cry of pain, nor did he fall, but he did stop in his tracks to inspect the figure he bumped into. Her brown hair was done in a ponytail, her glasses had fallen next to her, and the papers she had been holding had scattered all over her lap and the floor around her. She looked up at Levi before breaking into that crazy, trademark, and very annoying grin that would have tripled at the sight of a Titan.

"Fancy running into you, Levi," Hange chirped.

Levi wanted to snap at Four-Eyes for bumping into him, and he was going to, but he immediately remembered that the young, Titan-loving woman on the floor was the Commander, his superior office now, and already knocking onto the floor was not a good sign of respect.

Levi held out his hand, which Hange graciously took, and helped her up.

"Forgive me, Commander," Levi said in his trademark tone.

"Now, now," Hange said, back up on her feet, "No need to be so formal. But you could help me pick up these papers."

Levi bent down and picked up the papers that were scattered on the floor. It was funny, considering that Levi just left his office to get away from paperwork, only to run into more paperwork. Mountain ranges of paperwork all scattered across the floor.

"How much paperwork do you get per day, Four-Eyes?" Levi asked before gathering more papers on the floor.

"Oh, this isn't paperwork, Heichou," Hange said, picking up the rest of the papers, "One of the soldiers who was organizing records and notes had stumbled upon these and delivered them to me."

"What's so important for them to be given to you?" Levi asked.

"Apparently these were some... private notes of Commander Erwin," Hange said the last part a little quieter than the first.

This stopped Levi in his tracks. Commander Erwin's private notes? If he hid them in the records, than it was positive that he didn't anyone to find them (the Survey Corps had a little, okay, too-much notes and records). Even though Hange was Commander now, should she be looking through these? Levi wanted to know, but he decided against these, for he knew that Hange would go on about and ramble about how these notes could hold some studies that could be the key to turning Mindless Titans back to human or something, even though people within Marley probably don't have a cure for that.

What in these notes could possibly be so important that is had to remain classified, even amongst the high officers of the Survey Corps? The question still lingered in his brain, and, surprisingly, it took his mind off of his lost, and secret love for a while. That is until he saw a document that had a title that caught his eye. It was the last document on the floor, and it was stapled together with others. Levi decided to pick it up, knowing it was out of Hange's reach. The paper felt smooth in his hands as he slided it across the floor and picked it up. Inspecting the title, his eyes and thoughts were trapped at another dose of shock once he read the words.

Special Operations Squad #1

What? Levi's mind resorted to blankness. Hange didn't say it physically, but it was obvious. Anything that Commander Erwin wrote down in these notes had very, very, very important information. How did Levi's first squad make the cut? Maybe it was a record of their progress under his (A/N: which I mean Levi's) command. What was it?

Before he could read any further, the document was yanked out of Levi's hand. He turned to see Hange walking to her office (The Commander's Office) with all of the documents, including the one about the Special Operations Squad, in her arms.

"Oi, I was reading that, Abnormal!"

"I'm afraid this information has to be read by me first before you can read it Levi," Hange said, "but don't worry, if there's anything that must be revealed, I will let you know."

Hange then made a right, entering a hallway where her office would be. Hange told him that she would tell him anything that had to be revealed would be told to him, but everyone knew that even though people said that, they would end up reading the document and deciding that it must never be revealed. Levi knew this, and his raging curiosity couldn't be quenched. Not with that document. Levi knew this feeling of curiosity. He always had it in the Underground District, when he would think about the Upper World. But this was... a different type of curiosity. This was something he had to find out.

Author's Note:

Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Things are getting quite interesting. Well, at least in my opinion. What do you think that document about the first Special Operations Squad was about? What is Levi going to do when he finds out? How will he react to the truth? Read the next chapter to find out.

I will try to update "Shock" a little sooner than I do, because believe it when I say that after writing this chapter, I don't want to wait to write more.

I will say this in every chapter. All rights of Attack on Titan goes to Hajime Isayama. I don't own it.

Happy reading,
