Chapter Fourteen: Awakening
A/N: I am am reading the most recent chapter of the Attack on Titan manga online while writing this. Either way, enjoy.
Flashback (A/N: I know. I suck)
"And if the traitors should ever come back to the walls?" Hange said, her voice had a mixture of curiosity and firmness.
"What do you expect? We'll torture them for information," Nile Dok replied, leaning his head on to his hand, looking bored with the event.
After the rescue mission of Eren, whom they were able to save from Reiner Braun, the Armored Titan, and Bertolt Hoover, the Colossal Titan, a meeting had been adjourned between the three military branches and Darius Zackly, head of the Military, in order to discuss what should happen if they show up again.
"Nile, of course we'll torture them... if we even get our hands on them in the first place," Dot Pyxis, head of the South Garrison, said before taking a swig of his wine.
"Are you stupid? Of course we'll get their hands on them, Pyxis," Nile said, looking more annoyed than bored.
"All I'm saying is is that if they were able to destroy Wall Maria, cause so much ruckus five years later, AND get away? They might cause us more trouble than you think, Niley," Pyxis replied, referring the head of the Military Police by the nickname that he hated.
"God damnit, Pyxis!!" Nile violently muttered under his breath, tightening his fist.
"Enough! Are you two military heads or neurotic man-babies!?" Darius bellowed, the room shaking due to his shout.
Pyxis and Nile were silent after that.
"Okay, as we were saying... should the traitors ever return, then we will take action when the time comes. But until then, we must plan things out and solve the problem, such as their motives for returning," Darius said, his voice as stiff as a rock.
"They could be coming back for their comrade," Erwin Smith said, his voice, at the time, hiding anything suspicious.
"They would come back for her, even in Leonhart's current state?" Pyxis asked.
"Well, they don't exactly know her current state," Erwin replied, "But that doesn't change the fact that Leonhart could come out anytime she pleases."
"And what should we do if-"
"ENOUGH!!" Levi had shouted, not meaning to.
Silence. That's what filled the meeting room after his shout. After all, no one expects Levi Heichou to shout so loudly.
"L-Levi..." Commander Nile stuttered, wanting to know the meaning behind Levi's sudden outburst.
"What should we do if the Titan B**ch ever dares to come out of her little cocoon," Levi said, each word growing more dangerous by the second, "We'll drag her by the arms, handcuff her, and execute her. No exceptions."
"But Levi-"
"No. Exceptions!!"
"I..... all right."
Levi had then walked out of the room, his hatred for Annie Leonhart seemingly growing stronger by the minute. He vowed that we would make the Female Titan pay. Pay for killing all of those soldiers. Pay for killing his squad. And especially, he would make her pay for what she did to Petra!!! No exceptions.
End of Flashback
No exceptions, Levi thought as he walked down to the dungeon, the torchlight of the hallways illuminating his face. No exceptions. That's what Levi had said when the military higher-ups had that meeting in order to discuss Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover's return to the walls, only for them to almost discuss the return of Annie Leonhart. Levi was so filled up with painful memories, a rage that was a fire that couldn't be quenched. Or at least, he thought it was.
"Levi Heichou!"
Petra's voice immediately bought Levi out of his thoughts, like a wake-up call in the morning. It was then that Levi realized where they were. In front of them was an iron door that almost took up the entire wall, and a small keyhole, and though it looked average, this door lead to a special place. Behind that door was the cell where the Comatose Crystal originally lay binded, and in the Comatose Crystal lay Annie Leonhart, resting peacefully and shielding herself from punishment. That is, until now.
Levi had then frantically searched his pockets for the key that would fit into the lock, but as he searched, he heard Petra's melodious voice again.
"Heichou, this girl... Annie Leonhart... was she really the Female Titan?" Petra asked, her voice filled with curiosity, even though she knew everything, as Levi had explained it all on the way to Stohess District.
"Yes, Petra, this is her," He replied.
"What is the Military going to do to her?
"Probably execute her. After all, she did cause a lot of damage in Stohess her last day... and a lot of casualties in general,"
"You are just gonna execute her? No problem?" He couldn't understand how she was able to speak about Leonhart so easily, how she was able to speak about her so freely, considering this woman kicked her into a tree.
But he didn't answer her question just yet, as he had finally found the iron key that fit into the iron lock of the cell door, and as he put the key in and twisted it, unlocking the door, Levi opened the cell and stepped inside, only to meet with a reception of almost one hundred. Inside the cell were tons of soldiers who had gathered to watch the excitement, while up front, soldiers who were actually there to do work had been going on with their business. As Levi pushed past the bystanders, and as he got closer to the front of the room, steam had begun to get so powerful and stronger than it eventually became visible. He finally stopped at the end of the room, with Petra standing next to him, and what he saw... well, there really was no way to describe it. All he could say that everything seemed to be a big, broken mess. Metaphorically and literally. Part of the Comatose Crystal had been there, and part of it had become broken, ice-blue crystal fragments scattered on the ground. Steam had practically fogged up the room. It was like a rainy battleground, and it almost suffocated Levi, but then again, he was the captain of the Survey Corps, and he could survive anything!! Clumps of soldiers were surrounded by the crystal fragments, but he noticed that most of the soldiers were surrounded by something else.
What the hell could they possibly be looking at? Levi wondered as he walked to the bigger crowd. Pushing past most of them, while others let him through, he and Petra found places next to Hange, and his Original Squad at the very front, while the rest of the inner-most circle contained the Military higher-ups, Mikasa Ackerman, Sasha Blouse, Connie Springer, and Jean Kirstein.Their faces were a mixture of shock, surprise, and anger at what was in the middle of the circle. Why? Well, in the middle of the circle was Eren Yeager, on the ground, holding and cradling an unconscious Annie Leonhart.
You'd think that Eren would be shaking, but surprisingly, he didn't move. He stood firm and strong, not wishing to move.
"Eren, get away from that murderer!! Get away from that Titan!!" Levi heard Mikasa scream at him, but Eren didn't move.
"What are you doing, you suicidal idiot?" Jean the Horse-Brat muttered.
No one knew Eren's course of action. Except, of course, Levi.
After a few minutes, Nile Dok, who had also been there with his most trusted MPs, had finally lost his patience.
"That's it," He muttered as he walked to the center of the circle and yanked Leonhart from Eren's arms. He was dragging her away, with his MPs, a few higher-up Garrisons, and the Survey Corps higher-ups following.
"No!!" Levi could feel a pang of guilt in his chest as he heard Eren scream, crying to bring her back, what with his protective foster sister trying to calm him down. Eventually, he couldn't take it anymore!!
"Stop!" Levi shouted, causing everyone in the room to silence down.
Nile looked shocked and surprised and walked over to Levi, but not before throwing Leonhart down.
"What are you talking about, Levi!?" Nile angrily muttered, "Didn't you say "No Exceptions" when we asked what to do with Leonhart, should she ever wake up?"
"Nile, I had just gone through a series of memories when Leonhart was mention, so naturally, I acted out before I could think."
"So you're saying not to execute her?"
"Yes."
"What are supposed to do with her, then!?"
"Keep her under strict supervision, lock and key, and we'll decide what to do with her in about, well, how long as it needs to take us!!"
"But Levi-"
However, Levi walked off before anyone could do or say anything, and yet before he could go, he could have sworn he heard Eren say "Thank you."
It had been fine. Really. But now all he had to do was to make sure he could somehow find a way to make Leonhart stay alive, and have Eren look after her.
Don't let me down, Eren, Levi thought as he walked out of the cell and walked back to the surface before going to his horse and riding it home.
