Chapter Five: The Meeting
Author's Note: I know. I'm lame at chapter titles. But forget about that. Here comes Chapter 5 for you. Oh, and another thing. Remember that I do not, DO NOT, ship Eren x Mikasa. Happy reading!
It took Levi nearly every single bit of his will-power to simply try not to strangle Hange for waking him up. He could feel his eyes about to bulge out of his sockets if he didn't throttle Four-Eyes anytime soon. But he had to keep calm, for he knew it would get him in more trouble than being a war prisoner inside of Marley if he simply slapped Hange across her Titan-lover face. He tried to get his mind off of the fact that Four-Eyes woke him up from such a beautiful dream, but as soon as he did, his mind wandered to Petra. Sweet, beautiful Petra. Whoever or whatever ran the universe had given him another chance. It had given Petra back to him. Well, it was going to anyway, once Levi found her. He didn't know how he would do it, but he would find Petra somehow. How did he know? Because... the Captain of the Survey Corps had hope. Yes, the heartless, emotionless, blank Levi Ackerman had hope.
Levi had tried not to look so dreamy-eyed (yes, dreamy-eyed) when Hange escorted him to the meeting room, where, you guessed it, meetings for about anything were held. He couldn't stop thinking about how he had been given another chance, about how Petra was alive. However, other things also flooded his mind. Did Petra still love him? Did she even think about him? Is she in a relationship with someone else? Levi would break something if he somehow found out that Petra was in a relationship, or worse, engaged or married, to one of the other original Squad Levi member. Even worse, what if she was in love with, engaged, or married to a Marleyan!!??
Eventually, Levi had to abandon his thoughts in order to focus on the meeting. Inside the meeting area, sitting at the table, were many people, including the Yeager brat, Eren, and his mollycoddling sister, Mikasa, as well as Armin Arlert, Jean Kirstein, Connie Springer, Sasha Blouse, a few members of the Garrison, and even a few members of the Military Police. As soon as Levi walked in, everybody, except for the superior officers, had given their hearts (A/N: Again, I'm talking about the salute, not the romantic phrase! Or the gory phrase). The superiors had soon given their hearts to Hange when she walked in, which lead the meeting to begin.
"Why did you call us here, Commander Zoe," Nile Dok, Commander of the Military Police, had asked.
"Sorry, Nile. Didn't know you MPs were in the middle of your ever-so important booze-drinking and smuggling," Hange chuckled.
Nile immediately stood up forcefully, knocking his chair down and slamming his fists against the oak table.
"You dare insult Queen Historia's bodyguards!?" Nile shouted, leading to Eren, Armin, and many other Survey Corps members to stand in order to protect their commander, "You know we are not like that anymore-"
"So you admit it?" Hange grinned a smile that she usually saved for her little Titan experiments with the Yeager and Arlert brats.
"Uh-I-Uh-I-I-.... It doesn't matter. We don't have time for lazy corruptibles. Not anymore!! And you know it, Zoe!!" Nile shouted.
"Commander, with all due respect, please calm down," one of the MPs had asked, with a worried look on her face.
"Now, Nile, I'm not going to insult anyone. I know you MPs don't have anytime for your old habits. So let's just sit down and get this meeting going, shall we?" Hange said with a little grin on her face.
Nile stopped and stared at the successor of his old rival. You'd think that a goofball and a levity person like Hange Zoe wouldn't be fit for Commander of the Survey Corps, but if Erwin had named her the 14th Commander, then she had the potential. Nile sighed before sitting back down in his chair, which one of the MP's had so kindly picked up for him.
"Forgive me, Commander Zoe," Nile said.
"Now, now, Nile, no need to get apologetic. Just behave yourself during the meeting," Hange said before getting up out of her chair, changing her goofy persona to her serious one, "I've gathered you all here to share some information I had learned last night. Information that Commander Erwin Smith had left hidden, even up to his death."
Levi could feel his muscles tense, even though no one could see it. He was good at hiding his emotions in that way. But he couldn't help but get some sort of... feeling. A feeling that Four-Eyes was going to reveal the information about his old squad to him, not knowing that he already knew.
"Hold it!! Just a second, Commander Erwin!?" Eren said, his teal-green eyes widening in shock.
"Yes, Eren. One of my soldiers was organizing the records when she found some old notes that Erwin had written, to which she had given them to me. I read through them last night, and I found some information that most of you, no, all of you will not take so lightly,"
"And what is that information, Commander?" Dot Pyxis, who was one of the many representatives for the Garrison, had asked, his face more serious than ever, for his expression would be red and flushed over the many amounts of booze he had.
Hange took a deep breath before continuing her tale.
"It seems that Commander Erwin found out about Marley, Eldia, the history of the Titans, and... everything that's been taking over our lives," Hange said before continuing on.
Silence had then filled the room. This had given Levi the perfect moment to inspect everyone's faces, which were, not surprisingly, filled with shock. No one had spoken until Eren had dared to break the silences.
"He knew!? This whole time, he knew everything, and yet he still left us in the dark!!?? He couldn't relay the message to the Queen when she was crowned!!?? He couldn't tell any of his soldiers!!?? WHAT A COWARD!!!" Eren had shouted so loudly that the room echoed. At the word "coward" faces had turned around to look Eren in the eye. The Yeager brat had covered his mouth, apparently ashamed that he even bothered to say anything.
"Eren, calm down. You can't disrespect the commander!" Mikasa said calmly. From the corner of her eye, Levi could see her grabbing hold of his hand.
Tch. It's almost as if she's in love with him or something. Levi said before focusing his attention on Commander Zoe.
"It's quite all right, Mikasa," Hange said, "I understand how Eren feels."
"Forgive me for interrupting, Commander Hange," Rico Brzenska, who recently became Pyxis' right-hand soldier after his previous right-hand soldier... died during an attack from Marley, "but do you think we could find out when Commander Erwin found out this information. Maybe he wrote the dates somewhere on the papers every time he made a new note, or maybe he left some clues of the months or dates."
"That's what I thought after reading the notes, Rico, but after re-reading them one to many times, it became obvious that Commander Erwin didn't leave any clues about the dates," Hange said sadly.
"Perfect," Nile said, "Next thing you know, we find out that he somehow found a way to revive dead soldiers and didn't say anything about it, either."
Levi's ears perked up upon hearing Commander Nile's words. This is it!! Hange has to reveal the information about my old squad now!! He had been itching to ask Hange about the information and what to do with it, however, he would then reveal that he eavesdropped on the conversation Hange had with Armin, and eavesdropping a classified conversation was just as illegal as the crimes he used to commit in the Underground. But now... now Hange was going to reveal the information, and they were going to decide what to do with it.
"Actually, Nile..." Hange said with a small smile on her face.
At first, Commander nile was confused, but upon remembering his last sentence, his eyes widedned, and his mouth dropped into a perfect O.
"Oh For Maria's Sake!! Are you telling me that Erwin actually revived some dead soldiers!!??" Nile shouted, leading to the others to have their mouths drop open to a perfect O as well.
"Well, he hadn't actually revived the soldiers, but he just injected them with this serum so they could regenerate lost limbs and immediately heal wounds-"
"He turned them into Titan Shifters!?" Connie interrupted!.
"Connie, sit down!! And don't interrupt the Commander!!" Jean shouted.
"Sorry," Connie apologized, his head hanging down in shame.
"It's quite all right, Connie," Hange said, "You actually brought up a great point. No, he didn't turn them into Titan Shifters, but somehow, he had this serum that could just fix your body, and you still had your humanity, if that makes sense."
"I guess it does," Connie shrugged.
"Who were the soldiers? And why did Erwin inject them with that serum?" Sasha asked.
"Actually, the answer to one of those questions will greatly surprise you. This concerns you, Levi Heichou," Hange said, and everyone turned to face Levi, who pretended to look surprised. Well, he raised his eyebrow.
"What do you mean, Commander?" Levi asked.
"You see, Levi, the soldiers he injected were the soldiers of your original squad, and he injected them the night before the 57th Expedition" Hange told him.
Everyone made their shock known, and Eren once again stood up to make some sort of comment.
"You mean Gunther, Eld, Auruo (A/N: Again, I decided to spell it like that now!) and Petra-"
"Yes, there is chance they are all alive." Hange said, "and the reason why Erwin injected them was so they could find out more information about Marley. He told them the night before about his learnings, and he tasked the soldiers to sneak into Marley in order to learn more about them, with the condition that they never return to the walls."
"It's been four years, though," Sasha said.
"Exactly, which is why we need to bring them home," Hange said.
"What?" Levi was dumbfounded, even though it was just what he wanted.
"Heichou," Hange said with an "as-a-matter-of-fact" tone, which she almost never used, "Though it may not seem long, four years can give one many pieces of information if they put their mind to their research. Squad Levi definitely would have, which is part of the reason why we must bring them home."
"And the other reason why, Commander?" One of Garrisons asked.
"Isn't it obvious?" Hange said.
The Garrison soldier nodded his head to tell Hange that it wasn't obvious to him. In other words, he nodded his head "no".
"We simply have to bring them to their homeland. Their families are probably in a state of the purest sadness, and they are excellent soldiers. So we want them to come home that way they can feel a little-bit safer, but we also want them to come home so they can fight with us."
Levi could feel his heart leap with joy! Hange was going to try and find a way to bring the original Squad Levi home!! He was going to bring them back!! Bring Petra back!! But he remembered one of his words that gave him a guilty and queasy state of mind. Their families. Levi hadn't thought of their families. He hadn't thought about how the "death" of their children made them feel. He hadn't thought about them in four years. The least he could do for them was to bring them home to them. But what would happen when they find that "the dead have been brought back to life?" He must tell them the news.
"With all due respect, Commander, how are we going to bring them home?" The Horse Brat, Jean, asked.
Tch! I haven't thought of that! Levi mentally beat himself up.
"That is a very good question, Kirstein," Hange replied, "I've been thinking about that. Erwin had a whole bunch of notes he kept to himself. I'm going to read those from cover to cover (A/N: Not that those paper notes actually have covers) and try to find if Erwin had some sort of way to communicate with the soldiers, and if he wrote down their location. Once I find that, we are going to find a way to sneak into Marley and get them back."
"How on Earth are we going to sneak into MARLEY!!??" Connie shouted.
"Damn it, Connie!! Calm down!!" Jean muttered under his breath.
But instead of getting mad, Hange simply laughed. She was always one to find sunshine when someone would force a rainy cloud over her head.
"That part of the plan is what I have to figure out, Springer. But no worries. Once I have it all down, I'll let you all know."
The meeting was soon adjourned after Hange gave the Survey Corps, even the Military Police Brigade and Garrison a few jobs related to the information. While Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Jean, Connie, and Sasha were to help Hange read through the notes and find the information she was looking for, The Garrison were soon given the jobs of arranging supplies needed for the "Break in of Marley" (as Four-Eyes called it), while Military Police had to relay the information to Darius Zackly, the head of all three military branches, and to Queen Historia. Levi could have sworn he saw Armin blush and get a dreamy-eyed look when there was a mention of the queen. It wasn't long before Levi was given his job.
"Heichou, I think you oughta tell the families of the Original Squad Levi about the information. You were their captain, after all," Hange said.
Levi was sort of hoping he would get this job. He owed it to all of those families to tell them the news. They had to know that their children and loved ones were alive, and the best person to tell them was their captain.
"I accept, Commander," Levi said with his usual blankness.
"It's settled, then," Hange smiled, "The next meeting shall be in two days, at the most. Same time, same place."
All of the soldiers agreed to the date of the next meeting before this one was officially adjourned. The soldiers all went their seperate ways, but Levi stayed behind for a while to think.
Finally. Petra's coming home. Though he cared about the men as well, he couldn't help but think about Petra the most. He would finally tell her that he loved her (if it wasn't too late). What would happen after that? Well, he would just have to wait and see for himself.
Author's Note:
Well? What do you think? Will the plan to sneak into Marley succeed? Will they bring the original Squad Levi home? How will the families of the original Squad Levi react to the news? How will the Survey Corps find them? Will Levi and Petra find love within each other once again?
Stay tuned for the next chapter of "Shock", fellow readers.
