Gaia stared darkly at Pastor Nick as she sat in the wagon opposite him. Levi, who was next to her was yet to notice as he berated the group's officers around them. The pair was clearly in a foul mood. Levi, because he had to babysit a group of people who were completely useless whenever a titan was around, and Gaia, because for reasons that are unclear to her, this man had made Hanji very upset, which -of course- in turn, made Gaia wish that she had the strength to pick him up and throw him outside of Wall Maria. Not to mention, the feeling she had earlier started aching, which annoyed her to no end, she was a twitching mess.

Her malice-filled train of thought was brought to an abrupt halt when an apple was hung directly in her line of vision,

"It isn't much, but it's all I could get my hands on given our circumstances," Jean said, trying to sound light-hearted, but his eyes looked troubled. She wanted to ask him about it, but he shook his head as she opened her mouth, he was not ready to talk about it. The news about Reiner, Betholdt, and Ymir, spread like wildfire within the walls,

"Hanji would kill me if I let you miss a meal while she is out there, " he said, trying to smirk, but it came across more as a grimace,

"So, eat up, Shorty. So that you can grow big and strong," a bit of amusement danced in his eyes momentarily before dissipating once again,

"I am the biggest and the strongest, Numbskull," she said, trying to get to their usual banter, but Jean was distraught, clearly,

"That you are," because he agreed with her and nodded his greeting so that he could make his way back to the rest of the remainder of his cohort who looked just as upset as he was,

"Poor Jean," she said as she took a bit from the red apple, at least she got her favourite colour,

"Not everyone has instincts like yours, they need time to accept what they have heard," Levi explains, draping an arm on the back of the wagon where she sat, they were not exactly touching, but they were close. She had to stop herself from rolling her eyes in amusement, knowing full well that Levi was doing that because she was trying to make Jean feel better. If anyone doubted that she belonged to him at this point, it was by choice, because they both made it very obvious,

"...instincts...biggest.." she heard Pastor Nick mumbling and then gasped,

"You are the second female titan!!" he exclaimed pointing the finger at her accusingly,

"Well, aren't you a bright one," she said sarcastically, leaning forward, resting her one elbow on her knee she took another bite from her apple threateningly, her eyes never leaving his. He gulped, confirming that he caught her silent threat.

Levi watched the interaction with great interest, he always would catch himself reflecting on how much she had learned. She even learned how to threaten people, he felt pride as he saw a bead of sweat on Nick's neck.

"I wonder where she learned that," he thought to himself, with a certain amount of smugness in knowing that only he threatened people in front of her.

"It's not like we've been keeping it a secret, unlike you who seems to be riddled with them," she said accusingly, her eyes almost seemed to glow as she looked at Nick,

"Riddled? Armin and his vocabulary lessons," he thought to himself again. He watched as she continued interrogating Pastor Nick, knowing well that the man would be willing to be eaten by her before confessing.

She finally gave up and sat back in the wagon again, Levi had gone off to hear a few messages. She huffed in annoyance, this man looked at her as if he had a million questions,

"What?!" she asked growing annoyed,

"Why are you here?" he asked seriously,

"I'm sorry if my presence makes you uncomfortable, don't you worry there are at least 15 places I'd rather be than be here with you," she said matter-of-factly, as she crossed her arms. She twitched once again. His eyebrows raised,

"You've lost your memory," he said, it was Gaia's turn to be shocked,

"WH-"

"Gaia," she turned around to see Levi standing at the entrance of one of the buildings, he jerked his head indicating that she should follow him. She glanced once more at the man who clearly knew more than she did and hopped off the wagon, following Levi's direction.

She followed him through the backdoor of the building that the scouts were using to dine in and entered a small room right next to the kitchen. The room was mostly empty, it had a  bookshelf, and small wooden table, and four chairs. On the table was a bowl of stew and some starchy-looking thing next to it, she cocked an eyebrow at Levi,

"Jean could only manage what he could because of his position, you can't only eat an apple for a meal," Levi sat, guiding her to the table and pulling out a chair,

"I have seen people live off much less, in my short time within these walls Levi," she commented but did not fight him any further, he just hummed in response as he started feeding her. Despite being fully capable herself, Levi still tended to do a lot of these kinds of things for

"Its suddenly gotten a hell of a lot quieter around here," she commented looking at him questioningly,

"They are all soldiers, Monster, when they are called to fight, they must answer," Levi said, her eyebrow twitched at the nickname Levi had grown so used to calling her,

"Aren't you a soldier, shouldn't you be going as well?" she asked, as she took another bite from the vegetable stew on the awaiting spoon in front of her. She had grown so tired of these vegetable-filled meals, having only tasted meat once before. Had she known that it was so scarce within the walls she would have made sure to bring a lot extra with her walk to the walls with the scouts, all those months ago.

"I have my orders," he said,

"which are?" she asked

"To protect you," he said, feeding her the last of the food that was in the bowl,

"What? Why me?" she asked, taken aback by his orders,

"It has become apparent that the enemy is after the one titan on humanity's side. We have no proof that they might not be after you as well," he explained, the more he spoke, the more apparent it became that Erwin wanted to play things safe,

"I can't even shift at will like Eren, I am sure that my value is being overestimated. Even if it were the case, using you to guard me is overkill, don't you think? I am safe this far away from the battle," she said, leaning back in her chair and shrugging off her jacket, she did not miss Levi's eyes raking over her,

"Gaia, your titan form is as big as the colossal, you can understand everything happening around you in that form and the titans fear you. I think we have every right to suspect that they are after you as well," he explained, getting up from his seat and going to the window looking around,

"Okay...Valid...but I am sure you are much better using on the battlefield than here with me," she said turning to him,

"Titans would be the last thing humanity has to fear if something had to happen to you on somebody else's watch," he said with a very dangerous look in his eyes,

"Keeping us together is not overkill, it's the best strategy to ensure everyone else's safety from me and my wrath. It is called self-preservation,"

"...Eren- he -I-" Gaia said, standing in shock, her shaking hands trying to button up her shirt under Levi's piercing and openly violent gaze. Her eyes met his and amongst the rage, she saw something even worse...Hurt. Guilty tears distorted her vision,

"Levi, I am so sorry, I shouldn't have-" Before she could finish her sentence,

before she could even see him,

with a speed that was known to be lethal to a titan,

Levi left, slamming the door hard enough to make the frame around it splinter.

What have I done?
