Chapter Fourteen: The Aftershock

~from Kirito's POV 2nd person~
Your blade moved through the air faster than ever before, and you barely sensed any resistance as it sliced through the air and something a bit more solid.
Then, a long second later, Olivera's head fell forward from the stump of her neck as her body fell backwards, and you closed your eyes, feeling sick as her body lay sprawled in a bed of flowers. Because of her dress, she blended right in, only now the soil was being saturated with blood instead of water.
You collapsed on your knees, staring blankly at the clearing where you and Olivera had kissed not long ago. You supposed that some part of you should feel freed - freed from SAO, from this terrible, bloodthirsty game that paid back in loss and death. And yet...you just felt numb. There was nothing, no point, no reason, no purpose...
"Hey, Kirito!" called out a voice, and then Klein was clapping you on the shoulder. "Nicely done, man! But totally no fair. We were all planning to launch a massive attack, and then you just go and solo the boss? And you didn't even tell us in advance! We only just got here in time to see you land a finishing hit and chop the head off! I wonder how much HP it had?"
His voice sounded far away, like he was speaking on the other end of a bad phone connection, and you were only able to process what he was saying a few seconds later. "She," you whispered, your voice raspy. "Not it; she."
Klein just laughed. "Specifics, man. Whatever. We're done! We get to go home now!" he shouted excitedly, going in for a fist bump, but you weren't paying attention.
Just then, a mass message popped up, and you and Klein both opened it.

CONGRATULATIONS PLAYERS ON BEATING SWORD ART ONLINE!
THE FINAL BLOW GOES TO PLAYER: KIRITO!
IN THREE MINUTES, EACH PLAYER WILL RETURN TO THE REAL WORLD.
-KAYABA AKIHIKO

On your message, there was an attachment with an additional note:

THIS IS THE DROP ITEM AS REWARD FOR DEFEATING THE FINAL BOSS. OPEN TO ACCESS AND PLACE IN INVENTORY.

You bit your lip, hoping that it was a revival item, and you opened it quickly to find...
...a cash conversion password that would transfer your Sword Art Online currency into yen once you resumed your life in reality.
You X'ed out of the message feeling more lost and hopeless than ever, and that was when other front line players started coming through the trees. You stood up, casting a quick glance at Olivera's limp body, before turning to the trees, swords out.
"Kirito, man! What the hell are you doing?" Klein asked, laughing nervously. "The war's over! You saw the message! We're done here! Put your swords down. You don't need to fight anymore-"
"Keep them out of the clearing," you said, a coldness in your voice that Klein hadn't expected.
"Kirito," he said, his voice quieter but also confused. "What are you doing?"
One of the players neared, and you set yourself into an offensive position - just like when I cut off her head - swords at the ready, and Klein's eyes widened.
"Kirito, you can't do that! He's a player, Kirito!" Klein yelled, his eyes darting between the approaching figure and you, a dead-serious look in your eyes. He made his decision quickly, running towards the woods and telling first one player and then others that Kirito was in a different direction, in a clearing to the south, and slowly, Klein managed to lead them astray before returning to you.
"Kirito, what's wrong with you?" he asked, one hand on his own sword. His eyes held fear, but there was determination there too - determination to protect all of the players. If you became a risk to their safety, Klein would be forced to act. "Kirito, I don't understand," he said, his hand not leaving the hilt of his katana.
"I don't want...anybody...to come into this clearing," you said, and then you dropped your swords, blade down, into the flowers before turning and walking over to the middle of the clearing.
"Kirito? Wait, Kirito!" Klein yelled out, turning to you and trying to see who you were kneeling next to, but then the world started disappearing as Aincrad dissipated and you were tugged back into reality.
