Chapter 9, Part 4

I HAVEN'T SEEN Rian all day. I don't know where she is, but I know she's at school. He parents would never allow her to miss a day of school. If she's dying of a sickness with absolutely no cure besides her staying at home, she'll probably just die, because her parents would never allow her to take a day. So she's at school. She's just hiding. Probably from me.

I was with Jonny and the others, around the table outside, and almost every group of friends are having the same conversation right now; St. Patrick's Annual Fair Day. I'm not exactly into it, nor do I care about it, but this year, everyone seems to care. Everyone wants to go. Everyone thinks it'll be so much fun, including my friends.

Esther, Squirrel and Jonny are going on and on and on about what they plan to do and how they plan to cheat the stalls to win more. Honestly, their plans all sounded like they were about to fail horribly, but I didn't say anything. I ate fries.

"...You should take us all," Esther was saying, "You're the only one with a car so it makes sense. Besides, I don't want to walk. And I highly doubt they'd want to walk either." She nodded her head to Jonny and I. He blinked across at me before saying, "I'm okay with walking."

"No you aren't." I said quickly, finally adding to this conversation. "Because I'm not. I'm not cool with walking. Jesus Christ." I shook my head at all of them. I hate walking. I hate physical activity. I hate it. So no, I am not walking about a mile away from my house just for some stupid fair that I'm not even interested in.

"Fine, whatever." Squirrel shrugged his shoulders carelessly, as though Esther was just arguing for absolutely no reason. "Where's Rian, by the way?" Squirrel asked us and looked around. I looked around as well before Jonny spoke up. "Last I saw her she was in English with me."

"Why isn't she here?" Esther

"I think she's ignoring me." I told them. They all stared at me but neither of them said anything. There was an awkward silence for a few seconds and both Squirrel and Esther looked at me then to Jonny. What the hell are they thinking? Whatever it is, I think its right.

"How are you guys? Like... How are you guys?" Esther asked.

"We're fine, Esther."

"You need to venture out, you know that," Squirrel laughed. He looked at Esther and did some kind of dumb telepathic thing and she began to laugh as well. "You only date inside our group of friends." Squirrel continues to laugh. I rolled my eyes. Why are they both so idiot?

"Okay, okay, laugh it up." I sighed. Jonny began to chuckle as well and I stared at him, then remember the joke isn't on us, its just me. They all suck. And just like that, the conversation of Rian's whereabouts was lost in the wind.

"Dude, this is so creepy." I said to Jonny as I stared down at the stuffed toy in my hands. It was by far the ugliest stuffed toy I have ever seen. If was round, like a ball, with an ugly animal's face and two very large blue eyes, and on top the thing was a pair of droopy ears. Very ugly and depressing.

I threw it across to Jonny. "There. You have it."

"I don't want it." He chuckled and stared down at the ugly little thing. I won it at one of those stalls, and I hate it. I was planning on winning something huge, like a stuffed tiger. It was large and would look amazing in my room, but I sucked at the game and so I got a consolidation prize.

The music was mostly just a hum about the place, and all there was to hear was the victory shouts of villagers, or the stalls' music or every now and again a baby crying. Jonny and I left after I spent about thirty bucks at just one stall trying to get the damn giant tiger. Well we didn't leave.

Everything was being held at the field. Further away from the swing set and mini park, or we would have walked over there. We found a bench behind the tents and thought why not. Yes, I know, we're very lazy -- well I am. And he wasn't going to leave me here, for some strange reason. I can handle myself.

"We should at least get something worth keeping. This sucks." I took it from his hands and stared at the stuffed toy. Is this a rabbit or a dog?

"You're the one who won it."

"If you want we can go back and I'll show you I can actually win that tiger." I turned to face him.

"You're way too competitive." He smiled. I thew the thing at him. "I'm not. I'm just saying.. I can kick your ass if I tried -- at that game." I watched as he laughed. He can't possibly be laughing at me. I punched his arm. "You need to be a more supportive boyfriend."

Jonny grinned at me and it seemed as though his entire face was smiling now. "Yes. I'll be a your supportive boyfriend."

"I..." I stopped then looked around. What's the point denying it now. I nodded my head. "Okay."

"Okay." He replied. "We should go get a better prize." He stood up and I groaned. More walking. All we do is walk around this dumb field. We met up with Squirrel and Esther earlier and they were trying to win stuff as well, but they were also trying to get girls, which they obviously failed at. They didn't even try to cheat, they were completely distracted by the people around them than the game in front of them.

"Just know, if you win an epic prize, it would automatically go to me." I stood up with him. "That's totally unfair."

"Yeah, well, the world isn't fear, so deal with it."

"Damn." He smiled. Jonny pulled my wrist and began to walk back to the fair. I dragged my feet behind him like an unwilling child, and like the parent, he told me to cut it out. I stopped for a few seconds then went on again. He led me back to the stall and I realized the giant tiger was still there. I spent almost half my money on this dumb game, and lost, Jonny would do the rest.

The objective of the game was to throw three rings on the same bottle. If you accomplish that seemingly easy task, you pick your prize and your happy. If you fail at that very not simple task, your prize is picked for you and you aren't happy. I'm not happy.

Jonny paid to begin his first try and I stood at the side to watch. This game is impossible, just so everyone knows. Its such a cheat. No one can throw three rings on the same damn bottles! I folded my arms over my chest. Not even Jonny.

"Hey!" When I turned around it was Rian waving at me, with a guy on her arm. My eyes widened slightly as she walked to me and wrapped her arms around me. I hugged her back tightly. It hasn't been long but I missed her. The guy she was holding came closer to us and I recognized him. He also pulled me in for a bro-hug, which I returned in a confused way.

"Remember Mark." She smiled happily.

"Well that was quick." I said.

"I wasn't cheating on you, I swear. I met up with him tonight." she beamed. She was beaming. I feel like maybe I was holding her back. She seems so much happier now that she's back with Mark.

"Its okay. Its cool. I'm happy for you."

"I'm happy for you too. Honest." she said. "And Mark is such a nice guy.. He's definitely joining our group."

"Where were you?" I asked. I have no problem with Mark. He was a bit of an asshole to me but that was just one time and that's probably because I was dating Rian. But I don't really know him other than that, and I have no problem getting to know him.

"Oh I was completing a few assignments today. I have no hard feelings towards you. You know that right? You are who you are and I can't change that. I just sort of hated that you had to cheat on me to figure if out. But I'm really cool with you, and Jonny."

I grinned then pulled her into me to hug her. Rian laughed softly against my chest and I placed a chaste kiss on her forehead. She stepped back until she was at Mark and he put an arm around her waist and pulled her in to kiss her cheek. Okay, he's obviously claiming his property. I rose my arms in surrender and they both chuckled softly. It sounded fake, but then again, mine was fake as well.

I stepped back to meet Jonny, who was no longer playing the game. He was standing at stall now. He's probably just waiting for one of those ugly, weird stuffed toys. I stood a little  way away from him just so the guy won't see its me again -- losing. Rian and Mark stood beside me now to look on. I guess Jonny and I have company now for the rest of the night... Although we really didn't need it nor want it.

I stared down at the ugly stuffed toy. This is such crap. People shouldn't be allowed to cheat others this way. People shouldn't be allowed to treat others as horribly. But that's the world. Its accepted because its normal and doing anything else is different and difference obviously isn't accepted. Humans shouldn't be like that. Stuff like this shouldn't be accepted, people being cruel to other people shouldn't be accepted, people fearing to be who they are shouldn't be accepted, people not being absolutely happy shouldn't be accepted. I'm not sure if I believe in God or if I believe in evolution but however we got on this earth, I'm certain the outcome of it is not for us to treat each other with such hostility and hate. It should be love and acceptance. And not just acceptance of the norms, because after all, what really is normal?
