xv. Dear Lemonade

7:32 AM

8/1/17

Dear Lemonade,

When I first saw you, I didn't think much of you

You look like a typical teenage boy to be honest

Underarmor shirt, Adidas socks, Nike shoes

You could have been anyone

And if I'd met you at school, maybe I would have gone on thinking that for the rest of my life, but I didn't meet you at school.

We know each other because we are both volunteering

At a camp for disabled children this summer

My brothers go there, so that's why I got into it

I don't know what you're doing there, though.

But we're in the same group

You come Tuesdays and Thursdays

I'm there every day

So I'll see you today and we probably won't talk until lunch or so

But when we do, we'll laugh a little

And validate the fact that our little group of ten 7 and 8-year-old boys

And three girls

Is totally CRAZY!

But it's too much fun to care

You have brown hair that is too long to be attractive

In the pool it hangs down past your chin

And out of the pool, it covers your eyes

But those eyes --

---

----

-----

Are the first thing I saw of you and they're so hard to look at but they're even harder not to look at

Such startling green that I started to wonder if maybe

That was what was wrong with you

But you can see fine, I'm pretty sure.

You're thin and a little lanky and I think you play baseball

And there's silky brown hair on your legs.

Certain kids have latched themselves onto you

Which is so sweet to see

Honestly

As you walk down the hall hand in hand

With Matthew who can't talk

Or Isaiah who can talk, but can't harness his feelings

Or sitting on the hill with Jace at lunch

Talking sometimes, but mostly sitting

Even if you were the ugliest person in the world,

I wouldn't be able to help falling in love with you

Just because of the way they've fallen in love with you

There's so many other little things I could say about you

But I'll leave it here

Because you already know

And I already know

So it exists

                   Your friend,

                                   -Never

(P.S: If you ever read this, I hope you keep working with kids. You have exactly the right attitude for it.)
