With her dark hair hanging over her shoulders, Nancy picked up five year old Violet in her arms and carried her back to bed. Violet had crawled out of bed and into the bedroom where Nancy had been sleeping in.
The young girl had climbed up onto the bed waking up the woman and snuggling into her chest. Nancy had let her fall asleep on her before clambering out of bed and carrying her to her own bedroom setting her down and kissing her head.
Tucking Violet it and switching off the light, Nancy made her way back to bed. However, she couldn't sleep, she was now wide awake and it was three in the morning.
"Oh goodie." She sighed sitting at the desk where a letter sat unopened, collecting dust for five whole years.
She didn't have to open it to know who had written it. She knew right from the day she received it, six months after he had left, and the day before she disappeared in the midst of a late July night.
A tear slipped from her eye at the thought of Charlie Weasley, splashing onto the wood of the desk. How much he made her feel. How much she loved him but he didn't know. She had kept her feels at bay for years watching as he dated different girls, including their best friend, Tonks for a period of time.
She turned over the envelope in her hand revealing the bright red wax seal with a dragon imprinted in it. Carefully, she plucked it open and pulled the folded parchment of of the envelope.
Before she opened it further, Nancy clutched it her chest as more tears fell. She quickly swiped the away knowing that if Violet woke up again and returned to her, she didn't want the young girls to see her crying. It wasn't a sight that a five year old should have to see.
Her hands shook scared of what she was about to read. It may be from five years prior but it still scared her to hear what he had to say six months after he had left.
Did he find love instantly?
Her chest ached but she took a deep breath and unwrapped the folds. His sloppy, joined-up handwriting was so familiar yet so new at the same time. It had been years since she had seen it and as she read over his words it was like she could hear his voice reading it. Like he was sat there whispering in her ears.
Chills ran down her spine as she shivered at the thought of his voice. She could hear his laughter tumbling from his lips as he wrote the jokes he had included and how much she would kill to hear his laughter once more.
She hadn't even seen her parents in the five years she and been gone and their anniversary was coming up soon. Nancy debated about going to see them but it was a happy day for them and she didn't want to ruin it. Besides, who would look after Violet?
Picking up a piece of parchment she took a quill from the pot she had on the desk and wrote three simple words in the centre.
I am sorry.
She folded it up and placed it into an envelope that she kept plain.
Quietly, Nancy left her room and went downstairs to the living room where she sat in front of the fireplace. Placing the letter in the centre of it, she took some green floo powder and spoke her parents address and sprinkled the powder down. The fire erupted with vibrant green flames and when they dispersed the letter was gone and two small arms wrapped around her shoulder.
"What are you doing awake again?" Nancy asked Violet spinning around and lifting the little girl up resting her on her hip and sitting down on the sofa.
"I heard you and I am hungry." Violet told her.
"Vi, it's only...six am," she said looking at the clock. Had she really been sat there reading Charlie's letter for three hours?
"Yes, and I have school."
Nancy sighed, and took Violet to the kitchen and gave her some cereal. "We're doing numbers today!" The little girl bounced up and down.
"That's great, sweetheart." Nancy smiled drinking some coffee she had just made. Violet didn't know about Nancy being a witch, that's why the floo powder was hidden in a jar and the little girl went to muggle primary school. "Now eat up and go and get dressed. Don't forget to brush your teeth!"
Thankfully, Violet didn't notice that Nancy had been crying. Instead, she finished her breakfast and ran off to get ready, her love for school was real and Nancy didn't understand how she could love school so much. Nancy definitely didn't enjoy the education part, but the rest was great.
After dressing herself and doing Violet's hair, checking the girl had brushed her teeth. She gave the girl her school bag which contained her lunch and reading book with some pencils too and a bottle of water, Nancy took her keys and exited the house holding Violet's hand.
The school wasn't far from where they lived so a short walk wasn't too bad, even in the cold. She waved Violet off at the gate and watched as she ran off to her friends, Sam and Olivia.
Sighing, Nancy returned home and flopped onto the sofa. Today had already been so long that she wanted to sleep and sleep is what she did.
A fire erupted in the living room of a small house in London. The man and his wife not expecting any visitors, especially by floo powder. However, when the flames disappeared and nobody was stood there, Vincent Mulligan stood up and took a look finding a plain envelope resting on the door covered base.
He picked it up, opening it and showed his wife what it said.
"It's got to be our Nancy! Our girl!" He cried as tears pricked the corner of his eyes. "It has to be! I'd recognise that handwriting anywhere!"
Vincent and Sally Mulligan had hope that their daughter was okay. Just from this tiny note, they were overjoyed. Their daughter was alive. That was good! They were one step closer to finding her!
Just from the letter from Nancy.
