Nancy sat playing with some toys and Violet, the young girl giggling as she played with the dollies. Nancy leaned against the sofa, her legs outstretched with a camera in her hand as she snapped some photographs of Violet.
"Can we take one together?" Asked Violet, looking up at the woman with puppy dog eyes. "Please, we never have any together!"
Nancy sighed, "Come on then." She let the girl sit on her lap and get comfortable, her head leaning against her shoulder and a bright smile on her lips. "A smiley one?"
"Yes!" Grinned Violet. Nancy turned the Polaroid camera around and positioned it, looking straight into the lens and smiling wide like Violet in her lap. Once the photograph came out, Nancy shook it as it developed and once fully developed she held it in the palm of her hand and showed Violet.
"Can you keep it with you every day, so that I am with you even when I am at school?" Violet asked Nancy, "Because I know how much you love me."
Nancy chuckled, "Cheeky! You think a lot of yourself don't you missus?" Putting the camera on the sofa, she began to tickle Violet who rolled off of her lap and onto the carpet giggling wildly. Nancy's dark hair fell over her shoulders and tickled Violet's face as it brushed her cheeks which made the girl laugh even more and result in her getting hiccups.
"Oh dear!" Said Nancy, picking up the little girl, "Mr Hiccups has come to visit, no laughing for you, Vi." She smiled carrying Violet into the kitchen and setting her on a stool in at the island in the centre of the kitchen/dining room. "Now, let's see, Mr Hiccups enjoys some sausages and mash with some sweetcorn, do you?"
Violet nodded leaned on her folded arms, hiccuping. Nancy started to prep the dinner and then as it all started to cook, she sat down beside Violet. "Vi? Can we talk?"
"Of course, that is what we are doing already."
Laughing, Nancy nodded her head, "That's true. Now, you do know that I might not be here forever right?"
Violet nodded, "Yes, daddy said you just look after me whilst he is at work."
"That's right, and your daddy is meant to be home in a few hours."
"You're leaving?"
"Not leaving exactly, Violet, I will still visit you and everything, but in a way I am. I won't have to look after you anymore." Nancy told her.
"But I love you, I want you to look after me!" She started to tear up and her hiccups also increased.
Nancy wrapped her arms around the five-year-old, "yes but wouldn't you prefer your daddy?"
"I want you both!"Nancy had to stop herself from bursting into tears as she watched Violet become sad, "You have been here since I was a baby!"
"I know, but your daddy's contract is coming to an end and he will be working from home. You won't want me when he is here." She said just as the door opened. The sound of keys dropping onto the rack and the door shutting echoed as Violet started to cry.
Footsteps patted the floor and the kitchen door opened revealing a tall blonde man in a dark blue suit and shiny shoes. He smiled at Nancy but upon seeing Violet he strode across the tiles and lifted the girl into his arms. "Did you tell her?" He asked Nancy.
"Yes, sir."
Sighing the man rubbed Violet's back, "How many times Nancy, you have known me for five years and I still have to remind you to call me Felix. I may be your boss but that doesn't mean you can't call me by my name."
"Right, sorry. I have just put some sausages and potatoes to make into mash along with some sweet corn on for Violet's dinner. What would you like?" Nancy replied to the man who sat down with Violet in his lap, hugging him.
He mouthed towards Nancy, "We'll just order pizza in when she's gone to bed." Nancy nodded and put the kettle on preparing two mugs for some coffee.
"I wasn't expecting you home for a few more hours." Nancy broke the silence, "Is everything okay?"
Felix nodded, "Early plane back. It feels so good to be home, and I'm not going anywhere for a while." He kissed Violet's head.
"Daddy, I don't want Nancy to go!" Violet whined, "Don't let her go!"
Felix looked at Nancy, "When I said you wouldn't have to look after her, I didn't mean you would have to leave, I meant that I could look after her with you. You won't lose your job, Nancy."
"Oh," Was all she replied, "I'm sorry I must have got the wrong end of the stick."
Felix chuckled, his voice deep but caring, "Don't apologise it happens to the best of us. Now, miss Violet, why don't you go change out of your school uniform and get into your pyjamas for dinner, eh?"
"But I need to shower?"
"You can have one in the morning." Felix placed his daughter on the ground, "now go on otherwise it'll be burnt before you get back down!" Violet ran off out of the room, still hiccuping, and left the two adults to talk. "So how has she been?"
"An angel - no seriously she is a complete angel!"
"That's what makes me feel as if she is a complete terror in school." Felix snorted and sipped the coffee that Nancy had just given him.
Nancy disagreed with the man, "She loves school, never shuts up about it. How someone can enjoy school is beyond me, I just liked being with my friends."
"True, I never really enjoyed it either. She takes after her mother, she loved school." Said Felix, "It still amazes me how she just left, dumped Violet in my arms and left because she didn't want the commitment."
"It's awful, Felix, I know what it is like to leave family and friends'but if I had a daughter I would never leave her. Did you love her? Violet's mother? Oh, I'm sorry, that is too personal, I'll start mashing the potatoes." Nancy turned away from the man and began to drain the water from the saucepan and smash up the potatoes adding some milk, butter and cheese.
"It's fine, I didn't. It was a drunken one night stand, but it gave me the best thing I could ever be given, my daughter. It killed me leaving her for this long just for work but I knew, in the long run, it would benefit us both and she had the wonderful care and company from you." Felix told her, "Now, let me do that." He took the masher from her hand and started to take over mashing the potatoes.
Nancy sat back on her stool and drank more of her coffee, "I can tell Violet really looks up to you, Nancy. I mean it when I say you don't have to leave just because I am home. I would love some company when she is still at school, you will still get paid."
"I don't need payment."
"Yes you do, you have done nothing but bend over backwards for me and Violet and you still would be caring for my daughter which is still the nanny job. Payment is mandatory. Don't see it as work, you are the closest I have to a friend and I know that sounds sad, but everyone else I worked with was dreadful. You, however, are great and I love the bond you have with Violet."
Nancy nodded, "Very well then, I will be honoured to still work with you and Violet."
"Is Nancy staying?" Asked a small voice from the doorway. Violet stood in her pink onesie with a hopeful look in her eye.
"Yes she is, darling." Smiled Felix, "Hopefully for as long as she can stand us."
"YES!" Cheered Violet running up to Nancy and climbing onto her lap.
"Comfortable?" Asked Nancy, smiling.
"Very."
