04- the hospital

Keegan acted on impulse, she knew the painkillers must have taken some time to react, his bloodstream couldn't have used them all at once, his body had shut down. Noah's head was slumped, she reached a hand out and prised open his eyelid, his pupil looked down.

"Sorry" she muttered and then held back her hand for impact before slapping him across the face, what she knew now was that she had to keep him awake no matter what. If he slipped out of consciousness then she would be dealing with far bigger problems. Noah's eyes fluttered open and looked around, unfocused.

"Noah I need you to stay awake, I'm going to cause an ambulance, this is all going to be okay."

She reached into her pocket and turned on her phone tapping the screen impatiently, it was taking too long to turn on, as soon as it was on she dialled the emergency services, she asked for an ambulance and told them her location and what had happened. Then she sat back feeling sweat dripping down her forehead, she couldn't make sense of it all. He'd taken it before she had got there, that had been for sure, she ran everything through her mind. Noah had probably thought nobody was coming, so he'd gone through with his plan, then she'd called him and he hadn't told her.

If he wasn't currently floating between being conscious and unconscious she would have slapped him again. He held no loyalty to her, but they were inexplicably tied now, she felt for the napkin in her blazer pocket and clung to it like a comfort blanket.

"Noah," she said, surprised to feel warm tears running down her cheeks, this couldn't be it, this couldn't be all she had managed to do, she had been formulation a plan, a plan she hoped could save a life.

"I know everything seems hopeless right now, I don't know if you can hear me but I swear to you, I'm going to fix it, I've never been good at very much in life but this is one thing I'm going to do." she reached out and took his hand, she didn't know his story yet and she had to find out.

When the blonde paramedic arrived Keegan lied, she told her that her brother 'Robert' had overdosed, that he wasn't the cleverest of the Montgomery bunch, she told her that he needed medical attention right now. Noah was hoisted onto a stretcher, and as his 'next of kin' Keegan joined them in the ambulance all along knowing that something important had just occurred. The blonde paramedic who had introduced herself as Nancy assured Keegan that Robert would be fine, that if worse came to worse, they'd have to pump his stomach and they would just need to talk to her parents.

She gave them fake names and numbers, hoping that she could spin out the lie for a few more hours. It all seemed so very strange, this morning she had been invisible Keegan and now she was sitting in a hospital dressing room wondering how she was going to style her lies out. As it turned out, she didn't need to wonder.

Keegan waited for what felt like days but turned out to be an hour and a half, they'd been caught, someone somewhere had realised that she had told them a load of lies and there was going to be a lot of questions. Her mouth dropped open when around the corner came Noah, looking pale and sickly, he walked like someone who was in a daze and she had to reach an arm out to steady him.

"What the hell are you doing here?" she asked.

"The doctors... the doctors they pumped my stomach, they're gone , I'm fine now, they left the room to get some forms so I made a run for it, you don't strike me as stupid enough to have told anyone our real names, so I suggest we leave as soon as possible."

It all made sense but didn't at the same time, but she didn't have any time to argue, she placed an arm on his shoulder, forcing him to lean his weight on her and began walking towards the lift. They descended to the ground floor in silence, thankfully nobody stopped them, no alerts had been raised of yet. She wondered what would happen next, Nancy would probably be told off for not completing her paperwork fast enough, she hoped it wouldn't be too much trouble.

Once they were out onto the busy street and her ears were filled with the noise of traffic, Keegan turned on him, he didn't look alright at all.

"How could you do that?" she said trying to keep her voice steady, she didn't need to sound hysterical at this moment in time.

"I get that things might have seemed hopeless and I'm not an ideal choice by any stretch of the word, but after I arrived you had time to tell me what you'd done, but instead you left it all for me to deal with, imagine you hadn't survived, what would I have done then?"

"Sorry, sorry is all I can say. I've heard it all before, I'm selfish, the most selfish person to walk this Earth."

"Stop, right now" she ordered. "I'm going to forget that just happened, what I'm not going to let you do is throw yourself a pity party or let you think that the stunt you just pulled changes anything because it doesn't, I might not know the reasons but you deserve to live Noah, I could care less about the other stuff. Maybe that's why you wrote a letter to a stranger because you knew that they could see what you don't"

"Why do you care so much?" he said like the words pained him.

"I care so much because you're not the only person in the world who's ever felt like this and I need to do something right and if that something is saving your life and listening to what you have to say then I'm all down for it, no pity, no judgement, right now were two normal people who have just met, so tell me about you." she hadn't meant it to sound like a plea, and suddenly this was oh so very important to her, a human life was worth infinite amounts of effort.

"Okay," he replied simply.

And Keegan smiled a true smile that she'd thought she'd forgotten long ago.
