Chapter 6
Toby just grumbled the entire ride to work, he grumbled about how he had to take Ashley to work, he grumbled about her having a job, where he had to drive her. Ashley in honesty paid no mind to his grumblings since she based it on him being grouchy in the morning. Although she did begin to think why he'd wanted to adopt her if he clearly appeared to be annoyed at the responsibility it held.
''Right Imma, drop you off here the shop is just down the road, you can't miss it,'' Toby pulled up onto the curb as he spoke. He didn't even shut the engine off, instead, he gestured to the door and without a goodbye, Ashley was left on the pavement by herself.
Shaking off the overwhelming feeling of abandonment she begun to walk in the direction that Toby had pointed her towards. Many of the shops on the street appeared to be run down or completely closed. A little grocery store appeared to be closed for the day as it looked as if there'd been a break-in; one of the front windows were smashed up and a thin line of police tap had been rolled in front of it as if it would block someone from climbing over into the store.
In fear of being yelled at for staring Ashley kept her focus on the path ahead of her, only glancing to her right to make sure she hadn't passed the record shop she'd be working at. It still brought her overwhelming thankfulness for what Sarah had managed to set up for her; she felt that way towards Sarah mainly because judging by Toby's character he appeared not to care.
Dragging herself out of her thoughts, Ashley found herself outside the record shop. Taking a deep breath to compose herslef, she pushed open the door, causing a little bell to jingle. She sighed, instantly knowing that that small tinkering noise was going to annoy her in seconds.
''Hello?'' she called out, her voice a little croaky, causing her to cough loudly to get rid of that croaky feeling.
''yo, what's up?'' A voice yelled. It appeared to come from somewhere near the front of the store. However, since Ashley could still not see anyone, she guessed that there was some sort of storeroom, that they were calling from.
''Um, are you Blaze?'' She questioned, shouting in the direction she guessed he was.
''Whose asking?''
''Ashley, Ashley Ja...'' Ashley yelped in surprise as a figure rushed out from behind where the till was, to then stand in front of her.
''Yeah, I'm Blaze, nice ta meet ya girl,'' Blaze held out his hand for Ashley to shake. At first, she was a little confused by the gesture, but she shook it never the less, ''so how is ya finding Detroit so far?'' He quizzed, standing to the side of her so he could wrap an arm around her shoulder and lead her around the back to where he'd come out from.
''Erm, good I've only been shopping for my room and here so I haven't really explored yet,'' Ashley replied, allowing Blaze to lead her down a little corridor and through a doorway, which opened to reveal a little room decked out with sofa's, radio and even a small Tv set up in the corner. Not only was there a mini living room set up, but also a mini-fridge, microwave and a small gas stove shoved in the corner. Although Ashley did begin to wonder about the health and safety issues concerning the stove.
''Well if you do think about going exploring I wouldn't go alone,'' Blaze spoke, gesturing for her to sit down on one of the sofas.
''What do you mean?'' She rose an eyebrow at the same time as she sunk down into the seat, it was a lot more comfortable than she had been expecting.
''Just you're not in England anymore, let's just leave it like that ok,'' Ashley nodded, even though she was still unsure as to what he meant, ''. anyway, I gotta get ya to sign a few things. You know so I can pay you and make sure you an official employee,'' grinning at her, Blaze walked out the room before coming back with a wad of papers and a pen, ''take all the time you need I'll come back in about twenty minutes so I can then show you what to do.''
Twenty minutes later, Ashley was still sat in the room. She'd tried to suppress her feeling of needing a cigarette by chewing on the pen that Blaze had given to her, but after a while, she realised that wasn't such a good idea. Instead, she turned to pacing and fiddling with her hands, which is how Blaze walked in on her. At first, his forehead had scrunched up in confusion, but then he noticed the lighter sitting on top of the contents of her bag.
''Hey I'm going for a smoke you wanna join?'' trying hard not to show the smile on her face and failing miserably Ashley nodded, snatching up he lighter and box of cigarettes before following him out to the side of the building.
After having a little trouble with the lighter and the wind, both of them finally got their preferred nicotine riddle instruments lit. Blaze appeared to opt for rolling his, while Ashley was still on her leftover cigarettes she'd brought over from England.
''Yo you ever tried anything stronger,'' he asked, flicking a clump of ash to the ground.
''Once, but it was really weak my friend got conned into thinking it was like some of the strongest shit you can get. Boy was he wrong, we never did it afterwards in case it was too weak again,'' Ashley explained closing her eyes as she leant up against the wall. Every time she thought of Micheal she had a feeling that she was never going to see him again, which brought a wave of sadness to fall across her.
''Damn I gotta get you to sample some of my dealers shit then, find out what gets you freaky,'' Blaze laughed throwing his burnt-out cigarette across the pavement. It bounced a little before resting in a puddle that had formed from last nights rain.
''Hmm, you might be waiting a while then,'' Ashley responded letting out a giggle of her own. It was then as she and Blaze continued to go at each other that she realised moving to Detroit wasn't the worst place she could have ended up.
