(Y/N)'s P.O.V
Alva grunts as she drops a large fish on the counter, spinning the globe and grabbing a knife. She chops it up, sliding it to me as I grab the cutting board, dumping the fish pieces into the pot.
"Are we going to learn something today?" a girl questions with a small sigh, making me frown.
Alva grunts as she hoists another large fish onto the desk, looking over at me as I offer a small grin.
"Look, if you have to be here, at least be quiet," Alva growls back, slicing the fish as my smile falls.
"Erm... What she meant was... you could try practicing vowels," I offer, forcing another smile to my face.
"We don't have notebooks," a boy responds, another one behind him moving a large fish out of his way.
"Or pens."
I frown, looking back at Alva and gesturing to the group of kids with my head. She groans, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"All right, okay. Let's make a deal," Alva sighs in exasperation, setting her knife down. "If I teach you something, will you get out of here? Please?"
"Mm-hm," they all agree in sync, making me grin as I grab a nearby clean rag, wiping the board as Alva taps her chin with her knuckle in thought.
...
I wince, tightly smiling as the little girl drags the piece of chalk roughly on the chalkboard, making it screech.
As I flinch again, Alva sighs in annoyance, leaning on the wall with a bored expression.
The little girl finishes, making me clap lightly with an encouraging grin as she looks back at me with her own smile.
"You did it!" I chuckle, nodding proudly as she looks back at the board, her name Annelisse staring back at her.
"Really? That's... my name?" the little girl softly questions, looking over the letters with awe.
"Yes," Alva mumbles, expression blank as she rolls her eyes. "Yay, it's your name," she continues in a monotone.
"Wow..." Annelisse breathes out, looking back at the writing before turning to us with a bright smile. "Can you teach me more? Please?
Alva perks up in disbelief, my smile widening as I nod. "Sure!"
"Me next!" a girl pleads, Alva turning to the group of kids as they eagerly agree.
"Me too! I want to write my name!"
"Me! Pick me!"
"I wanna write mine!"
"Teach me!"
Alva breathes out through her mouth softly, turning to me with a newfound hope in her eyes as I grin widely and nod.
...
She peers into our savings, pausing and backing away with uncertainty.
Alva closes it again, shaking her head before turning to me. I give an encouraging nod and smile, making a small smile tug at her own lips as she nods back, reaching back into our savings and pulling some out.
...
The next evening...
Jesper's pony struggles in the snow, huffing as I encouragingly crack the reins. "Come on, you can do it!"
It snorts before plopping down, panting heavily and shaking its head.
"... Or not," I sigh, dropping the reins and looking to the two men.
"Too heavy," Klaus mumbles, stepping out of the carriage.
"Okay, then," Jesper slides to the left from the loss of Klaus' weight. "We can go by ourselves. You don't have to..."
I climb out, holding my arms out as Klaus starts unloading some of the presents. He hands them to me, making me softly grunt as I set them down carefully.
"... I mean, no offense, but someone could use a little diet cleanse," Jesper continues, making me raise a brow and sharply look at him as he frantically stammers. "N-- No! Not you, doll, you're perfect, I, uh, meant... what are you doing?"
He pauses, noticing Klaus was removing presents off the sleigh as I help.
"Less presents, less weight," Klaus simply replies, handing me another sack as I set it down.
"Makes sense. The pony can't handle it," I agree with a nod, Jesper blinking rapidly.
"Less presents? But... Less presents means less letters..."
He rambles, making me sigh as I start to unload some myself with Klaus.
"And less letters means less..."
Jesper quickly shoves the sack I was about to grab back onto the carriage, gripping my outstretched hands as he trails off.
He looks down at me, my eyes shifting to our hands as he quickly lets go while clearing his throat. Klaus raises a brow at Jesper, sharing a confused look with me.
"More children's dreams being shattered," Jesper dramatically finishes, hugging the sacks of gifts. "No. No, no, no. I won't allow it. We have a sworn duty for the children!"
...
Third Person P.O.V
"Oh, come on, Jesper!" (Y/N) sighs at his dramatic self. "You're being silly."
He snickers and pulls away from the cart before pausing as a reindeer softly grunts, gaining their attention.
Jesper smirks at (Y/N) and Klaus, making Klaus raise a brow with a frown while (Y/N) stares at him blankly.
"Bad idea, Jesper."
...
Jesper screams as he lunges for a reindeer, landing in the snow as it trots away.
...
He swings down from a branch, a rope tied around his waist. He reaches for a reindeer, grunting with effort as he struggled to reach for it.
...
Jesper sneaks up on one, slowly reaching for it before letting out a muffled yell as it sits on his head.
...
Jesper, still stuck hanging from the branch, tries to air-swim to the reindeer, making (Y/N) laugh.
...
Jesper leaps from the tree with a battle-cry, landing on the back of a reindeer. He grins triumphantly, "gotcha!"
The reindeer snorts, walking away with Jesper on its back.
...
Jesper screams as he lunges for another reindeer, startling it as he lands besides it.
...
Jesper grunts with effort as he tries to push a reindeer, to no avail.
...
He holds the tail of one, yelping as he stumbles after it as it trots away.
...
(Y/N) was grinning widely in amusement at the sight, Klaus leaning back on the cart with a neutral expression.
"Hmm."
She laughs as Jesper screams, his screams changing pitch as he bounces on the back of a reindeer.
Klaus sighs, pushing off the carriage and walking past (Y/N). "Unhook the pony, please."
(Y/N) looks after him with a head tilt, nodding as she walks over and unhooks the pony from its straps.
...
Jesper yelps as he was dragged by the reindeer, holding the rope around its neck.
Klaus slowly leads reindeer with him using treats, the reindeer happily following him while Jesper struggles in the distance.
He screams as the reindeer finally bucks him across the clearing, landing roughly in the snow while panting. (Y/N) walks over, grinning widely as she looks down at him.
"You okay?" (Y/N) giggles, making Jesper peer up at her with a heavy sigh.
"Never better, doll."
"Good. Then, come on," she muses, gesturing for him to follow as she walks to the carriage.
He raises a brow before noticing the pony was in the stable, and Klaus was currently finishing up hooking the reindeer to the carriage, (Y/N) climbing inside.
Jesper sighs, rising and dusting the snow off his clothes as he walks over, jumping as a reindeer snorts.
"Right. I wear them down, and you catch them," Jesper nods, climbing and settling in as Klaus climbs after him. "Good team--"
He cracks the reins, (Y/N) and him screaming as the reindeer suddenly take off at full speed.
"Whoa! Whoa!"
(Y/N) laughs at the speed, squinting to look ahead as the reindeer's hooves thunder in the snow, their breaths coming out in heavy pants.
Jesper continues yelling with his own laughs, Klaus even laughing himself.
(Y/N) and Jesper look to one another at the same time, making him quickly clear his throat and look away as she nervously laughs, Klaus shaking his head in amusement at the two.
"U-Uh... Okay, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea," she says after a moment.
"Good call, reindeer," Klaus agrees.
"Right, g-good teamwork here," Jesper stammers, rubbing his neck. "We're making good time."
"Right," she awkwardly agrees.
"Reliable, strong, and cooperative," Klaus nods, looking ahead.
(Y/N) peeks over at Jesper, a small smile on her face as she shakes her head with a laugh, the sun setting in the distance.
...
The next morning...
"Okay, post office is officially open," Jesper opens the top half of his door, leaning on the frame. "You have your letters, step right up."
He takes the letters as the children hand them up, "Thank you, thank you, thank... Doll!"
Jesper greets in surprise, (Y/N) grinning and waving with a letter in her hand. "Hey. I had another letter for (Family Member or Friend)."
He nods with a smile, the children looking between them with curiosity as Jesper stares at her, cheeks a light shade of pink. (Y/N) rocks on her feet, her eyes flicking down to the children staring at them before she chuckles sheepishly.
"So... here," she softly and awkwardly murmurs and holds the letter out, Jesper slowly taking it. Their fingers brush together, that same spark flicking between them as (Y/N) jumps lightly, glancing down at her hand with confusion before looking back up at Jesper with a small smile.
Jesper softly grins back as he glances down at the letter, lightly clearing his throat as he leans his arms on the counter. "Say, if I were to ask you--"
A snowball whizzes past (Y/N)'s head, just barely missing her and striking the wall next to her and Jesper as she yelps, him jumping with a startled shriek.
"Hey!" Jesper shouts as he recovers from his shock, looking towards the source of the snowball with a scowl, (Y/N)'s hand set over her pounding heart from the scare as she looks back as well.
"Hey, losers!" the same boy from before growls, his friends with him. (Y/N) rolls her eyes with a huff while Jesper's glare hardens. "What gives?!"
He gathers another clump of snow, making it a snowball as (Y/N) slightly raises up her arm, ready to block it as she steps back with a frown, Jesper tensed up and ready to move if he had to.
"I sent my letter, and all I got was a lousy clump of coal!" the kid continues to complain with a glare, packing in the snow as he creates a snowball.
"Well, serves you right!" Jesper firmly replies as he points at the child, crossing his arms over his chest with a firm huff. "Devilish little tadpoles like yourself don't get toys from Klaus."
"Oh, yeah?" the boy scoffs, readying his snowball with a glare. "And how would he know what I'm up to unless you or the hag ratted on me?"
Jesper grumbles under his breath, (Y/N) frowning and looking towards the ground as she softly huffs. He looks over at her and notices her expression, frowning before his gaze hardens.
Jesper slowly opens the door, stepping out. "Oh, we didn't have to. He knows."
(Y/N) looks up to Jesper, tilting her head as he subtly winks at her. The children at her side gasp softly at his words, the little boy scoffing again.
"What do you mean?"
"He sees everything you know," Jesper continues as he gestures around, coming closer to the boy. "Every mischief, prank, name-calling and dirty deed."
He kneels down to the boy's height with a stern look, "He keeps a list. The..."
Jesper trails off for a moment, looking away before lighting up, facing the boy once more. "Naughty List, he calls it."
"You lie--!" the boy hisses, cut off by Jesper.
"Trust me," Jesper interrupts and leans closer to the boys face, firmly glaring at him as he whispers. "You do not want to be on the Naughty List. So..."
Jesper looks at the snowball before glancing over his shoulder at (Y/N), who raises a brow with a small smile as she tilts her head.
He faces the boy again, "You still wanna throw that snowball? Or call that beautiful woman over there a 'hag' again?"
The boy breathes heavily, shuddering lightly as he quickly shakes his head with a whimper.
"I didn't think so," Jesper's face remains neutral as he rises, tipping his hat down and marching away with confidence.
Yeah...
Jesper makes his way back over to the office, the boy dropping the snowball.
Why'd you have to go and mess with the postman?
He walks past the kids, smirking and sending a flirtatious wink to (Y/N) before taking her letter.
That's what you get when you mess with the postman!
She watches after him with furrowed brows before slowly smiling, rolling her eyes in amusement as she turns and walks away. The children watch Jesper with wide eyes before looking at each other with soft gasps.
"Only good children get toys?" one questions, frowning with wide eyes.
...
A little boy dips his quill in ink, his tongue sticking out as he focuses on writing.
"Dear Mr. Klaus... I shoveled all the yards on my street today."
...
The scene changes to him shoveling the snow, a Krum man exiting his house and gasping at the Ellingboe boy.
"That's good, right?"
"Hi!" the boy greets, waving before continuing on as the man stares at him in bewilderment.
"Please don't put me on the Naughty List."
...
"Dear Mr. Klaus," a girl writes, the same old woman from before waddling towards the sheets to ruin them.
"Today, me and my brothers helped Mom with the chores."
She raises her bucket, pausing as the sheets were snagged down. The woman peeks over the fence, watching the children fold the sheets and rush away with the basket.
"We'll do this every day if you bring us some toys. Honest!"
...
"Dear Mr. Klaus," the Ellingboe girl from before writes. "Our neighbor was fixing up the hole in the fence today..."
The Krum boy's father works on the old fence on a flimsy ladder, gasping as the ladder slips out from under him.
"And then he fell. And he hurt his leg."
The father screams in pain, gasping as the Ellingboe children help carry him back to his house on a sled.
"Let go of me!"
"It must've really hurt..."
"I'm being attacked by Ellingboes! Help!"
"... Cause he wouldn't stop screaming."
The father's son and one of the Ellingboe girls help wrap up his foot, a scowl on the father's face.
"So we helped him. He said he didn't like it but... deep down, I think he did."
The Ellingboe girl offers a spoon full of soup, making him grumpily take the bite.
...
"... That's what I did today," a Ellingboe boy writes, knocking on the door to a Krum's house. "And yesterday..."
The woman opens the door, jumping in surprise at the sight of a basket of her garden's berries on her porch.
"Instead of stealing Mrs. Runa's berries, we picked them all for her."
She looks up, the Ellingboe kids giggling as they wave and run away.
"Hmm?" she blinks in shock, tilting her head.
...
"She came to our house later..."
The Ellingboe woman opens the door, Mrs. Runa scowling as she shoves a basket of jam to her.
"And she brought Mom lots of berry jam."
"Hmph!" Mrs. Runa huffs, turning her nose up and walking away.
...
"And then... Mom brought her a berry pie!"
Mrs. Runa opens the door, the Ellingboe woman shoving the pie in her hands.
"Hmph!" she nods firmly, turning and walking away.
...
"Dear Mr. Klaus..." Annelisse writes with a smile. "I've been going to class every day, and I always do my homework."
"Aw! Thank you so much, Annelisse," (Y/N) coos with a smile as Annelisse hands her an apple. "You have one for Ms. Alva, right?"
"Of course!" Annelisse nods with a grin before she looks back. "Hi, Mr. Postman!"
(Y/N) looks over, Jesper already watching her as he leans on the gate. He tips his hat her way with a small smirk, winking as he pushes himself off the fence.
"Ooh," Alva teases as she leans on the doorframe, the other children giggling.
(Y/N) blushes, quickly gesturing for them go inside as she swiftly follows and shuts the door.
"Miss Alva and Miss (Y/N) are the best teachers ever!"
Jesper laughs, shaking his head as he walks away.
...
"... Also, I cleaned my dad's old clarinet!" a boy continues, dusting off his father's instrument with a small smile.
"I hope I did a good job... He seemed happy."
The boy's father walks into the living room, gasping at the sight of his clarinet, all shiny and new-looking.
"Could I get a toy, please?"
...
The two fighting bands noisily play aggressively, pausing as the boy's father plays a beautiful clarinet solo.
...
Children work on repainting the graffiti on the fences, painting a bright white on them.
The woman from before drops the pot, gasping as it was thrown back with a daisies in it.
...
The same thugs yell as they hold up their weapons, sliding rapidly down the hill. They quickly halt with confusion as a boy holds up a red sign, holding his hand out.
The boy turns, flipping the sign green for the old women carrying the odd-shaped bag as a little girl helps them cross.
Mrs. Krum looks down with narrowed eyes, Olaf at her side. "What?"
...
Ellingboe and Krum children laugh as they run through the street together, Mr. Ellingboe pausing with Pumpkin.
"What the..."
...
The children all work together to make Smeerensburg a better place, pulling the weapons out of the walls and fixing up broken homes.
...
More letters pile in, making Jesper grin widely as he empties them on his table.
...
The Krum boy's father, now healed, looks up at the broken fence. He sets down boards of wood, twirling the hammer in his hand as he smiles.
...
(Y/N) grunts as she sets down piles of notebooks, turning and organizing a bundle of pencils as Alva reaches in and takes more of the savings.
The two walk together, (Y/N) carrying paint inside a box and Alva carrying some boards of wood as they walk to the school.
...
"Hey, there, Chief!" Mogens greets as he opens the window, smirking. "How're we doin'..."
"Not now, got a lovely women to tend to," Jesper simply replies without looking up, Mogens' eyes wide at the sight of all the children in the room holding letters, (Y/N) setting hers on the table.
"What? How--?"
Jesper smirks, using his foot to kick the window shut as he focuses on stamping (Y/N)'s letter.
...
Jesper moves the curtain, scribbling the scale up to the 3,000 spot and circling it with a grin.
...
The Ellingboe girl's mother pulls water from the well, gasping as the large fence suddenly collapses. Her children gasp and smile widely, her eyes wide when she sees what the Krum boy's father built for the kids.
"Come on, guys! Let's play!" the boy giggles, cheering as he slides down the slide.
Her children rush over with giggles, the Krum boy's father smiling and tipping his hat to the mother with a nod.
...
Jesper fills more of the spaces the chickens slept in, (Y/N) noticing and smiling.
She works on making a small coup outside, Jesper returning one day and finding the chickens gone.
He looks around, pausing when he sees the small structure and (Y/N) feeding the chickens outside.
She waves with a grin, making him slowly smile with a chuckle and wave back.
...
As Jesper received more letters, the better Smeerensburg got. Alva used the savings to rebuild the school and get supplies. She replaces her knife-globe with a brand new one, (Y/N) nodding in approval before working on painting the walls.
The string above was no longer occupied with fish, instead filled with the kid's drawings from (Y/N)'s art class she had.
...
Mrs. Runa offers a cake with a smile, the mother chuckling and motioning for her to come in as her children tug Mrs. Runa inside.
...
The Krum boy's hounds happily play with Ellingboe children as they laugh in glee, climbing up the playplace.
...
The two noisy bands now play in harmony together, Krums and Ellingboes coming together to listen to them play.
...
Alva teaches math while (Y/N) draws to represent the objects she was talking about, the children giggling at her silly drawings of snowmen while Alva laughs softly, (Y/N) rubbing her neck with a grin.
...
Children line up outside Jesper's post office, eagerly handing in their letters as (Y/N) and Jesper chat.
Mrs. Krum watches from a distance, a scowl on her face. "I think it's time we send that postman and his little girlfriend... A message."
Olaf grins widely, clapping his hands with a quiet squeal.
...
Mr. Ellingboe frowns as he looks outside from the balcony.
"You know what to do, Pumpkin."
Magdalone slowly backs into the shadows, "Mine..."
...
