Chapter 7
A/n: Hey guys! Sorry for taking forever to update. I got my phone taken for a very long time cause I did a very bad thing. Please be smart my children and don't be a moron.
All three girls arrived at Sayori's house, taking a seat on the couch.
"I vote we make cupcakes!" Natsuki said after the girls had talked for a good five or so minutes.
"I like the idea, but just cupcakes sounds.. Iffy.." Sayori commented.
"Movie then.." Yuri said quietly.
"What was that?" Natsuki turned to Yuri.
"I-I just thought cupcakes and a movie.." Yuri said, her face turning red slowly but surely.
"What if it was a competition?" Sayori suggested. "We compete to see who can make the best cupcakes in uh.. Four hours or so, and then whoever makes the best cupcakes gets to pick the movie!"
"Sounds easy enough, what do you say Yuri?" Natsuki said, hands on her hips.
"I.. Sounds like a plan.." Yuri replied, despite knowing that she's never made cupcakes before and that her opponents have.
"Well, lucky enough, I have left over cupcake mixes." Sayori said. "I bought them to make with Nat, since I planned on it being just her and I tonight, but it'll be enough for each of is to make a batch."
Yuri felt her blood boil at the fact that sayori planned on it being just Nat and her tonight. Yet, when she looked over the couch to see Sayori and Natsuki setting everything up, she felt a deep guilt, and her heart hung low.
"Maybe they are made for each other..."
"Oh, crushes?! Who Yuri? Spill!!" Yuri held a hand over her mouth to prevent her from shouting at the top of her lungs in fear. Sayori just smiled, leaning over the back of the couch.
"I was meant to say that in my head..."
"What's going on?" Natsuki walked over by Sayori on the opposite side of the couch.
"N-nothing!" Yuri quickly replied, yet her panicked tone stayed the same.
"How about more to the competition then; " Sayori said, a smirk forming on her face. "Yuri and I can go against each other with Nat as the judge!" Sayori suggested.
"Would you quit saying Nat you little pr*ck?"
Yuri's thoughts surprised even herself. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a few moments.
"That's not how you treat a friend.. Sayori is yo-"
"Earth to Yuri?!" Yuri's racing thoughts were interrupted by none other than Sayori, who was waving her hand in front of Yuri's face.
"O-oh, yes?" Yuri stammered, feeling her cheeks go from her natural skin tone to a bright red.
"We compete and have Natsuki judge our skills. Whoever wins picks the movie. Sound good?" Sayori repeated, but her tone wasn't as cheery as it was earlier. It was more... Annoyed.. Or at least it was to Yuri.
"S-sounds good." Yuri replied, taking a loose strand of hair and toying with it in her hands.
"Then get your lazy butts started! Not like your cupcakes could ever compare to mine, but I'd love to see you try!" Natsuki shouted all the sudden, causing both Sayori and Yuri to jump a little before racing to the kitchen.
The first two minutes of Yuri's time was cubbort searching, since she'd never been to Sayori's house before. Sayori did end up starting the actual batter before Yuri, but she didn't see what cubbort Sayori went in to.
"I knew she had to have something..." Yuri pulled the box out of the upmost cubbort. It was a cupcake mix box, like the ones you would buy at a Walmart or Kroger. It wasn't necessarily cheating to use it since Natsuki hadn't called it out.
Scanning the instructions quickly, Yuri got started on her batter. Sayori, on the other hand, was already filling her cupcake pan.
"Just keep calm Yuri... Comebacks are still possible."
Yuri got her batter made rather quickly, half-heartedly pouring it into the twelve slots on the pan while Sayori took her cupcakes out.
"Her's look good even without icing..."
Yuri set her pan into the oven and set it, dashing back over to her station to get her icing done a.s.a.p.
"Oh Sayori didn't make her icing while her cupcakes we're in the oven... I have a shot!"
Taking her opportunity, Yuri hurried to finish her icing. Once she was done she checked on her cupcakes, which were about half done.
"Maybe if i crank up the heat..."
Yuri turned the dial to a hotter setting and kept an eye on the cupcakes. It wasn't cheating, but she was sure Sayori disagreed.
Once the cupcakes looked finished, Sayori had just finished her icing. It was down to the wire between the two.
"Done!" Both girls said in unison, holding up their pans of cupcakes.
"Woah, alright." Natsuki was shocked that they both finished at the same time.
Natsuki walked up to Yuri's pan first, scooping off some of her icing with her finger and taking a lick.
"Mmm, not bad.." Natsuki commented.
She went over to Sayori's next, doing the same thing she'd done to Yuri's icing.
"Not terrible..." She said.
Next she took a cupcake out of each pan, first taking a bite of Yuri's.
There was no comment.
Finally she took a bite of Sayori's.
"Mm, not as good as mine but still good.." Natsuki said.
"W-what about mine..? You didn't say anything.." Yuri blurted out.
"I was just about to talk about that, you're reading my mind." Natsuki responded. "You cranked the heat up, which yes, is a good strategy, but you can't rush perfection. If anybody tasted those, you'd be able to tell that the baking process was rushed." Natsuki finished.
"Oh, alright." Yuri said, setting her pan on the kitchen table while Sayori did the same.
The three girls talked amongst themselves while eating one another's cupcakes. Sayori did say Yuri's cupcakes didn't taste as bad as Natsuki made them out to be, which brightened Yuri's spirits, but only slightly.
"The cupcakes were my one shot to impress her, and I was so fed up with winning that it all went downhill.." Yuri still thought, knowing her's weren't as good as they could have been.
Yuri stepped out of the room for a moment to go to the restroom. When she came back, Natsuki and Sayori were on the couch together under a blanket. Both were leaning on each other, and both were asleep. The movie they were watching was still playing.
Yuri was just about to walk over to them, but held herself back.
"Is it really worth it..?"
Yuri looked at Sayori and Natsuki again, her head spinning with ideas.
"Maybe it is worth it."
Yuri found a sticky note and a pen on the counter. She scribbled see you at school tomorrow and left it there. Quietly she let herself out and began her way home. She knew exactly what she would do tomorrow.
