Rises The Moon (Song Lyrics I)
((Heres the very unedited, first draft version of this story, cause i got to lazy to go back an fix it. Also this is pretty much an AU based off the lyrics of 'Rises The Moon' by Liana Flores
Enjoy!))
'Days seem sometimes as if they'll never end'
Lance sits in the solstice castle, waiting for Pidge to come back. He's been staring at the sun for what felt like eternity. The days were supposed to be getting shorter, with longer nights, but today didn't feel so short. Winter wasn't Lance's favorite season, he'd much prefer Hunk's job, as he got to take care of Easter and all those other fun holidays. Even if Lance got to keep Valentine's Day, that didn't mean he liked the role he played. He would confront Allura about switching, but her wrath would probably start early summer.
It was nice to have the longest nights though. It gave Lance the longest time in the world to watch the midnight waves, even if he sometimes tweaked them to his liking, which he thankfully hasn't gotten in trouble for yet. Plus, the hours of darkness were the best time of the 24 hour cycle, even if the other gods thought otherwise.
'Sun digs its heels to taunt you'
People could argue that the hours of light were filled with joy and happiness, but Lance knew otherwise. He's been watching over for decades, and what he could see during those shining hours were nothing but stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Sure, there were times when you would feel at you most happy, surrounded by friends or family, but you go home and it's all gone. When the moon comes up, you're comforted with a new light, a new friend.
Midnight can make you feel free, running around in the dark with the comfort of the stars. The best of ideas are made at night. It's when all the lights go off that it's the most relaxing, when all your worries can be put to rest. Dreams would be Lance's favorite thing at night, when he can every so often look at the wonders of where someone's dream can take him.
'But after sunlit days, one thing stays the same'
The sound of steps from the hallway breaks Lance from his thoughts. He can already feel himself getting excited, as the time for sunlight is almost over. The moment Pidge turns the corner, Lance grabs the moon staff without a second passing. Pidge doesn't protest and just let's go of it with a tired smile, and heads off to their quarters. Lance bids them a goodnight before they turn the corner, and all they do is wave him off. He smiles to himself, glad that Pidge is going straight to rest this year.
Lance waits a few minutes, not yet aloud to leave yet. He needs permission from Allura before he can even activate the staff. The moment he sees the robin fly by the window he wastes no time to run down the stairs. He already knows where he's going to stay this winter, as it's going to be the exact same as last year, and the year before that. It was his own little place by his favorite beach that he used to go to as a mortal. He's long forgotten the beach name now, but no matter how much time passes, it always stays the same.
He walks up the hill and already sees all his stuff. Thank god for Pidge finding out a way to transport things automatically, or Lance would be carrying all his stuff up and down this hill. He discards his attention from his stuff when he gets to the top, as his full mindset turns to the view of the waters before him. The sunlight reflects off of it, the orange making a glow upon the ocean. It was beautiful, but the moon would still beat the sight of it anytime.
'Rises the moon'
With the sky almost ready to change color, Lance quickly starts up the staff's magic. When it glows blue, he can feel the moon's spirit through the wood. It's a warm welcome and Lance can't help but smile from it. He makes sure to face away from the sun when he points the staff to the ground. He slowly lifts his arms, and he watches as the moon glides through the sky. To humans this may look like it moves within hours, but for gods like Lance, time doesn't apply to them during this action.
Rising the moon is an activity that only takes mere seconds, but Lance likes to take his time when he raises his arms. Watching the moon go up when lifting it isn't always something someone gets to experience every day, so Lance wants to enjoy it for as long as he can, because he knows one day Allura will lay him off the job and let him live one more mortal life.
.
'Days fade into a watercolour blur'
A week into winter, and Lance is already getting tired. He thought he had brought all the supplies he needed to keep him occupied, but nothing seemed to entertain him, and all he'd end up doing is watching the waves go by. Today was different though, as just when he was getting ready to rise the moon again, he saw someone at the beach. He didn't have time to look for long enough, as he had a job to do.
As the sky changed color before him, he tried to rethink any detail he had saw from the mysterious person. He must've just glanced because he couldn't remember anything in particular. Lance doubted the person would still be there after the sunset, as the colors from the sky would no longer be there to entertain, only the stars and moon.
'Memories swim and haunt you'
Once the moon is up and secure, Lance puts down the staff and glances down where the sand is, just to make sure. He's surprised to still see the person there, and then realizes it's a mortal. Lance doesn't want to get to close, so he just takes in details from where he was. Its a few minutes of the mortal just sitting down, but when they get up Lance sighs in disappointment.
He expects them to leave right away, but instead they just walk closer to the water. They seemed to just stare right at the edge of where the water would move up to, not doing anything. But after moments of doing nothing, they abruptly start into the water. They swim right into it with no vail, and Lance is somewhat worried about how cold the water would be. As they go on is when Lance notices the stronger waves further back, and it seems they were swimming right towards them.
He gets up instantly, not pulling his eyes away for a second as he grabs for his staff. A wave has already crashed into the mortal and they've disappeared by the time it's in his hands and Lance panics. He pushes back the waves to calmer water and he searches for any sign of the human. He sees a bunch of bubbles surfacing in somewhere in the water, and he can only perceive it as the person trying to breath. He tries to calmly glide the ocean to help the human back onto land before they lose oxygen completely.
When the human safely shows up on shore, Lance is down on the sand without a second to last. He considers preforming CPR, only to realize he can just use magic instead. He places both hands onto the chest of the mortal and tries to search for the ocean water that was inhaled, being careful to only take the salt water. In a sharp moment he brings all the water up the throat and the human coughs out water.
'But look into the lake, shimmering like smoke'
The guy jolts up and brings a hand to his mouth, coughing a few more times. All sense of air was brought back to him and Lance was glad to still see him alive. The guy takes a few moments to open his eyes, but when he does Lance can tell his eyes were fogged up. Lance tries to greet him, but he looks right past him. His eyes are back on the ocean, and he looks almost fearful. He gets up and heads the direction away from the water, and Lance is left ignored.
'Rises the moon'
'Oh-oh, close your weary eyes'
Lance felt hurt at the feeling of being seen right through like a ghost, deciding to just let it go. He headed up the hill and stared at the sky, waiting for any signs of the sun. The moment he got one, he pulled the moon down faster than he usually did and set the staff on the ground next to him. Sighing, he laid down, looking at the bright sky. He was just going to forget about today and sleep, he can worry about it tomorrow.
.
The next time Lance saw the guy by the ocean was probably a month after the incident. He was so relieved to see him well as he headed down to the beach. Lance sees the mortal holding something when he gets close, something that definitely had pages. He just thought the guy must've been reading, but the more he approached the more he noticed that the guy was writing.
Lance wouldn't say he was nosey per say, but when he got there he looked over the guy's shoulder to see what he was writing about. The top of the paper was labeled 'poem' and to the right was the date and a name. Keith, it must've been the guy's name. Lance had definitely heard better names, but it was whatever.
He continued to write, and Lance kept watch of each scribble. The guy would write, erase, and then rewrite something else, keeping the process going until he stuck to something officially. He had two lines down, and looked like he was having trouble with the next one. As he took his time to figure out the third, Lance read the first two in his mind.
'I promise you that soon the autumn comes,
To darken fading summer skies'
It confused Lance on why this guy would be talking about this stuff in winter, but figured writing certain stuff isn't determined by what season it currently was. It's like writing about winter when it was still currently fall, or something like that.
The guy adverts his head to look at the ocean for a moment, and Lance wonders if he should've brought his staff. Nothing happens though, the guy just ends up looking back at the notebook (journal?) and writing down a few words. He stares at the words, and when he doesn't erase it, Lance reads them.
'Breathe, breathe, breathe'
The words made Lance feel a little uneasy, seeing as the guy might've just taken the event that occurred to him and wrote it within his poem. But when the guy softly smiled, Lance felt the uneasiness melt away, as another feeling formed. His chest felt warm and it seemed to no longer be that cold outside.
.
'Days pull you down just like a sinking ship'
It became a habit to go down to the beach when Keith visited. Today was one of the days that was filled with emotion. By the time Lance got to him down at the beach, he looked really sad. He was sitting closer the water than usual, with all his stuff laid behind him as he was curled up into a ball. He stared at the flowing water with no sign of movement.
He tucked his head in after a while, and Lance noticed as he started to shake. Quiet sniffles could be heard every so often and Lance just sat and watched, not being able to do anything. When a soft sob came from the mortal was when Lance decided he'd at least try to help. He resulted to placing a hand onto the guys back as a form of comfort.
'Floating is getting harder'
When he hand made contact with the guys back, his head alertly whipped up, making Lance pull his arm back instantly in a panic. The guy let go of his legs as he looked around. When he didn't see anything he just wiped his tears away quickly and grabbed his writing book. Instead of writing though, he ripped out a piece of paper and crumbled it up into a ball. He set it aside and kept ripping paper out until Lance realized he was ripping out his writings.
Lance caught a glimpse of the certain poem he first saw the mortal write before it was ripped out with all the others. The ripping kept going and going until there was only blank paper left. Lance looked at the pile of paper that had formed, wondering what Keith was going to do with them. He grabbed one and opened the crumbled paper, seeing it was a poem Keith wrote a few days ago. He set it infront of Keith, hoping he'd notice it.
When he did, he stared down at it. He looked conflicted and Lance wondered if he just made it worse. Keith reached for the paper, but before he could grab it, a flow of water came up the sand and took the poem with it. Lance watch the paper retreat back with the water, before turning his attention to the human.
'But tread the water, child, and know that meanwhile'
Keith had his book propped up on his knees as he reached for his pencil. He wrote quickly, his hand writing being messier than usual because of it. When he was done, Lance read over it, seeing it was the same of the poem that the ocean just stole. Keith ripped it out, but instead of crumbling it up, he folded it neatly and placed it in his book, before closing it and putting it in his bag.
After, Keith proceeded to grab the crumbled papers, unfolding them, and refolding them properly, before placing them in his bag. It took him awhile, but eventually, he got through all the papers, all safely back in his over-shoulder book bag. He put the rest of his stuff away and grabbed his bag, standing up.
Lance knew that meant he was leaving for today, so he bid him goodbye. He didn't answer, but Lance already expected that.
'Rises the moon'

'Days pull you up just like a daffodil'
Lance had been able to contact Shiro regarding why the mortal couldn't see him through letter. He wrote to Shiro specifically because Lance knew if he asked Allura, she wouldn't talk to him, and Pidge was resting for this season, so it would be best not to disturb them. It took about a week to get a letter back, but Lance was glad Shiro even contact him back.
Lance learned that fallen gods, or gods that were once human, could not interact with any mortal. Well, they could try to interact, but most of the time the interaction doesn't register to whomever the god was trying to talk to. For a god like Lance to be able to be seen by a mortal, is if the mortal noticed the god first. Usually gods would send signs, no matter if it was nature-wise or physical-wise, hoping that the mortal would notice the presence as another living being. And with that information, thanks to Lance's fellow moon god, he knew how to get Keith to finally see him.
.
'Uprooted from its garden'
The next day Lance tried to get Keith's attention, by pulling a wave in, far enough to make it flow to where Keith was sitting. Keith, though, didn't seem to like the gesture as he yelled at the ocean to fuck off as he packed his things and left. Lance figured splashing him with water wasn't the way to go, and tried to think of a different rout.
The next time Lance tried, he made the moon unusually in view of exactly where Keith liked to sit, hoping he would notice enough. But instead he had glanced at it and made a quick comment, taking a picture with his phone, before moving on.
The attempt after that was rearranging the stars to say 'hello', which went down in flames when Lance had accidently crashed a planet into another one far out of the solar system. On top of that, Keith didn't even notice a single thing. Lance was not looking forward to getting yelled at by Allura when he got back.
One of the other attempts was getting an owl to sit near Keith. He screamed when he first saw it, and almost hit it with his book, but after that he settled down and fed it some random food he had in his bag. No noticing Lance though, just another failed attempt to go into the pile of fails that seemed to be building up by the second.
.
'They'll tell you what you owe, but know even so'
After two weeks of trying, Lance was starting to get less motivated. His chest was starting to hurt as the end of winter neared. He didn't know why he was hurting so much, or why he felt like crying whenever something else failed to get Keith to notice him. It was to the point where he almost did cry. But he didn't, knowing he would never live it down if Allura saw him.
The current day was the day before the dreadful spring solicits, which meant Lance was going to leave to go back to the castle until winter. He was sitting next to Keith, watching him go through his folded pieces of paper that he ripped out just a month ago. They all seemed to be in good condition, probably thanks to Keith taking care of them.
Lance eyes caught onto one piece of paper specifically when Keith had unfolded it. It was the poem he had been working on the first time Lance saw him write. Instead of folding it back up, Keith kept it opened and grabbed his book. He rewrote the poem word for word onto one of the pages, and sighed as he stared at the paper. Lance knew this stance all too well, it made him smile when he saw Keith concentrating so hard.
'Rises the moon'
While Keith was preoccupied with that, Lance decided to grab one of Keith's extra writing utensils and a random piece of paper. He had memorized this poem by now, so he knew how it went. What he wanted to do was finish it for Keith, as a gift before he left. The thought of leaving pained him to think about, but Lance ignored it as he thought of ways to finish of the poem.
He wasn't a poet whatsoever, but he's seen Keith write enough poems that he has an idea of how to. With Keith's style of writing in mind, Lance scribbled down a few ideas. He ended only keeping one idea, erasing all the others in the process. It was only the first line, but it was enough to guide him into his next line. And with his third line he finished off the poem, to have the same amount as the original one had.
Lance looked over at Keith, seeing he's erasing a few things he wrote. Nervously, Lance placed the poem onto Keith's leg, hoping he'd like it. Keith noticed the paper instantly, abruptly stopping whatever he was doing to glance at the paper. He placed down his pencil to replace it with the paper, and lifted it closer to his face to read.
'You'll be visited by sleep,
I promise you that soon the autumn comes,
To steal away each dream you keep'
It took him a moment, but soon a placed it back down and adverted his eyes to look at the ocean. His eyes moved to look to the right of him, and Lance swore he looked straight at him. After a while of Keith staring in his direction, Lance thought he must be hallucinating or something. Keith's hand reached out with his pointer finger and it inched towards Lance slowly. It made contact with his arm and Keith pulled his hand away to look back up at Lance in shock.
"You're real?" The words flew through Lance's mind. His heart stopped for a moment, and all in one moment, emotions Lance has been pushing down for the last month came to the surface. "You can see me?" Lance asked, a wave of sadness and relief overwhelming him. He could already feel tears building up as Keith nodded his head.
One by one, tears finally fall down Lance's face, and Keith looks at him worried. Keith tries to comfort him by putting his hand on his arm, but all Lance wants right now is a hug. Lance knows the mortal is panicking before him, trying to figure out a way to make him feel better, but Lance doesn't know how to even make himself feel better.
"Breathe, breathe, breathe" the words come out as a whisper as a form of comfort, but Lance chokes on his own sob. He realizes how late it is and how he needs to go back. He doesn't want to go though, Keith can finally see him. He can finally talk to Keith about how he makes him feel.
Lance has to go though. He gets up and grabs his staff quickly before Keith can say anything. He turns to look at Keith, already feeling more tears pierce his vision. "I'll see you again" Lance says, hoping that if he says it, it'll become truer. Keith doesn't respond, and that's when Lance decides he has to leave.
By the time he gets to the castle Hunk is already standing there waiting. He passes him quickly, giving him the staff and leaving admittedly to his room. He slumps onto his bed and pulls his pillow as close as he can for comfort, as he washes his pain away with tears.
-The End-
. . .
Alternative Ending:
Lance goes straight to Allura's quarters after getting to the castle. He knows his face is still stained with tears, but it doesn't matter how he looks. He busts into her room, and she jumps, surprised by her door slamming open.
"Allura I quit" She looked confused at the statement as she turned towards Lance. Her face changes in something that could be worried when she sees him. Lance waste no time to get onto the floor before her, "Please, give me a mortal life now, I beg of you". Any embarrassment that Lance would've had right now was thrown out the window and he waited for Allura's answer.
"Are you sure?" Her voice asked and Lance could only nod him head, fearing he might start crying again if he spoke. He heard her sigh as she stood up, walking towards him. "Please stand" she said, and Lance did exactly that. She was smiling with sadness as she sighed again. "You know your memories will be replaced with new ones when you become mortal again" she said, but Lance already knew that.
No matter if he couldn't remember or not, he'd find Keith eventually.
Allura looked away and waved her hand, telling him to leave, and so he did.
.
Keith has been having this reoccurring dream ever since spring has started. He'd meet some guy at the beach, but never get his name, and once he ran off somewhere, Keith would wake up. He figured that must've been the end of the dream, but something in the back of his mind kept telling him otherwise.
It was mid-April, and Keith was at the store to buy himself a new journal when he had seen someone walking by him for a split second. He glanced over to see who it was, but the person had already turned into a different isle. Keith let go of it and grabbed the journal he liked, walking over to the register. He only noticed halfway there he had forgotten pencils, and turned back.
He made his way to where the pencils were and grabbed a pack. He adverted his eyes to notice someone shopping next to him. When looking over he dropped the pencils. The guy seemed to notice and picked up the pencils, hand them to Keith. "Here you go" the gesture was simple, but Keith was frozen on the spot.
It was the guy in his dream. Like the guy. How is he the guy? Is that even possible?
"Hello?" The guy said, and Keith refocused, taking the pencils. "Thank you.." Keith said, not meaning to add on but the guy responded anyways. "Lance" he said, smiling at him.
Lance. It was fitting name.
"Thank you Lance" Keith repeated, smiling back. "How about you?" Lance asked, and Keith looked at him confused, "You're name" he same again. "Oh, Keith" He responded and Lance frowned. "Keith? I feel like I've heard that somewhere" He said, looking around for a bit. He just shrugged and looked back at Keith with a smile, "I guess I'll see you around then Keith".
"I guess so" Keith muttered as Lance walked off. He wondered how they were going to meet again, but brushed it off as he went to go back in line.
