CHAPTER EIGHT
( TIME OF DEATH )
— ☾ —
Alex glanced at Malia. "Hey, can we go back to school today just to get my jacket?"
Malia frowned at her best friend as she glanced at her from her position. She was sitting in Alex's desk chair, Alex sitting on the edge of her own bed.
"You want to go to school again? Do you realise they're gonna be there?" Malia responded with raised eyebrows, referring to Scott, Stiles, Lydia, and Kira.
"I know, I know, I just want to quickly get my jacket, and then we'll leave, okay?" Alex responded, Malia frowning again. "It was sixty dollars!"
Malia groaned in annoyance. "Fine. But after that, I'm going to see Peter straight away."
"While you do that, I guess I'm going to try to find my brother." Alex blew out a breath.
"Hey, are you sure he's your brother? I mean, he could just have the same last name as you." Malia responded, frowning.
"No, I'm sure we're related. Why else would Scott and Stiles keep him a secret?" Alex raised her eyebrows, Malia nodding.
"Alright, fine, we can go to school. But only to get your jacket." Malia spoke. Alex sent her a small smile.
Suddenly, Alex's phone rang. The girl didn't even have to see the caller ID to know that it was Stiles. She sighed in annoyance, pulling out her phone and putting it on silent, ignoring Stiles' call.
••••
"Excuse me?" A male voice asked, interrupting the gang's conversation. The group turned to face the boy that spoke.
"Hi?" Scott frowned in question.
Stiles took a second to observe the boy that interrupted them. He had wavy-curly, dark brown hair, and green eyes. Stiles immediately saw the resemblance between this boy and Alex. He was Alex's brother.
"Sorry to interrupt, but I was looking for Alex Carter. I was told she goes here?" Lucas glanced between the group. "Have you seen her?"
"No..." Stiles blew out a breath. "No, we haven't."
Kira shook her head, while Scott sighed, Lydia shaking her head as she twirled a strand of her hair.
"I'm Lydia. This is Kira, Scott, and Stiles. That's Liam over there." Lydia spoke, changing the subject, pointing to Liam, who was a few meters away from the group, talking to Mason. "And who might you be?"
"I'm Lucas." Lucas responded as he glanced at Lydia. His eyes raked up and down the girl, taking a second to observe her.
"Wait...Lucas, as in 'Lucas Carter'?" Kira raised her eyebrows.
Lucas frowned. "Uh, yeah...how did you-?"
"Your name was on a dead pool. It's kinda hard to explain, but we're not stalkers, we promise." Stiles cut in before Lucas could finish his sentence.
"Do you guys know my sister or something?" Lucas' frown deepened as he glanced between the group.
They all went silent, Lucas raising an eyebrow. "Looks like I've struck a nerve...uh, sorry..."
"No, it's fine." Scott sighed. "Look, basically, we hid a very big secret from her, and she found out...we were gonna tell her, we swear we were, but she found out first..."
Lucas sighed, beginning to walk away. "Well, thanks anyway guys." He glanced at Lydia, smirking. "See you around."
Lydia gave the boy a small smirk.
"Hey, wait." Stiles spoke, stopping Lucas, who turned around with raised eyebrows. "If you find her, can you just tell me if she's okay?"
Lucas nodded. "Of course."
••••
Alex tried her best to be as far away from Stiles and Scott as possible.
Alex wasn't that mad at Kira, as the girl didn't mean to hide the secret from her.
Alex wasn't that mad at Lydia either, considering she'd known the strawberry blonde since they were kids, and she knew Lydia would never try to hurt her intentionally. However, she was still hurt.
"Alex hurry up, I want to leave as soon as possible." Malia blew out an annoyed breath. "I'll be in the bathroom." The werecoyote spoke as she didn't wait for an answer, walking away.
Alex rolled her eyes, walking into an empty classroom and taking her jacket from the back of a chair it was on.
As the girl walked back out of the classroom, she heard something, causing the girl to stop walking.
"I'm looking for Alex Carter." A male voice spoke to a girl a few meters away from Alex.
Alex turned to face the boy, taking a second to observe him. Curly-wavy, dark brown hair, with green eyes. She knew this boy was her brother.
"Uh, over here." Alex spoke loudly, causing Lucas to turn around and face Alex. His eyes lit up at the sight of her, the boy walking towards the girl.
"You look just like mom." Lucas spoke as he approached Alex, who raised her eyebrows. "Oh god, sorry, that sounded better in my head..."
Alex chuckled. "No, it's fine, don't worry about it."
Lucas smiled. "Wow. This is really happening. I'm really talking to my younger sister. Holy shit."
Alex grinned. "And I'm talking to my older brother. Is it weird that I want to hug you?"
Lucas chuckled. "No, go right ahead."
Alex chuckled as she engulfed Lucas into a tight hug, smiling to herself. I have an older brother. I actually have a sibling.
Lucas grinned as the two pulled away.
"Hey, Alex, let's g-" Malia started, stopping herself as she approached Alex and Lucas. Her gaze was set upon Lucas.
"Malia, this is Lucas." Alex started. "My brother."
Malia widened her eyes, her hypnotised gaze breaking from Lucas as she glanced between the Carter siblings. "This is your brother? He's hot."
Lucas raised his eyebrows, a small chuckle leaving his lips as Alex cleared her throat.
"Well, I think that's enough of that, Malia, come on, we're leaving, I'm dropping you off at Peter's." Alex breathed, glancing at Lucas. "You wanna come?"
"I just met my only remaining living relative. Obviously I'm going to come." Lucas huffed a chuckle, Alex chuckling too.
••••
Alex had just finished explaining everything to her brother, detailing the dead pool, her friends, and what was going on in her life generally.
"And what about Stiles?" Lucas asked. Alex didn't mention Stiles in her explanation.
Alex crossed her arms, glancing at the ground. She was standing up, Lucas sitting on the edge of her bed. "How do you know him?"
"Your friend Lydia introduced me to all your other friends when I was looking for you at Beacon Hills High." Lucas explained, huffing a chuckle. "And I take it by that response, anything relating to Stiles is a sore subject?"
"Well, you're right about that." Alex blew out a breath. "He's my...boyfriend."
"But you're not talking to him?" Lucas frowned in confusion.
"You know why I'm not talking to him, Lucas." Alex sighed.
"Yeah, yeah, I know." Lucas replied. "But it's kind of over now, I mean, I'm right here, and from what I can tell, he was only trying to protect you."
Alex frowned. "He kept you and my best friend's real father from me for...who knows how long."
"Your friend's dad isn't really your problem though." Lucas responded. When Alex's frown deepened, Lucas shrugged and raised his hands in a surrender motion. "Just saying..."
"Lucas." Alex groaned annoyedly.
"Okay, look, I know that was kind of a dick move, but come on, he's been trying to apologise." Lucas spoke, Alex frowning in confusion. "Your phone's been blowing up."
Alex forgot her brother was a werewolf too. He could hear her phone buzz from time to time from inside her pocket.
"Well, I still don't forgive him." Alex spoke, shaking her head. "You don't keep secrets like that from someone you love. Especially when that person is by your side through everything. Especially when that person trusts you more than anyone."
Lucas' gaze softened at the girl's words.
"He really hurt me, Lucas." Alex finished. "And that whole situation going to take awhile to get over."
After a moment, Lucas spoke up. "What about your other friends?"
"They hurt me too. But not as much as Stiles did." Alex responded. "The only ones I'm not mad at are Liam, Malia, obviously, Kira, and Lydia. Scott and Stiles though..." She let her voice trail off, hinting at the fact that she wasn't going to forgive her two 'best friends' that easily.
••••
Stiles wiped his eyes as he heard a knock on his door. He got out of his bed, beginning to walk to the door. The person knocked again.
"Yeah, I'm coming." Stiles groaned, tired from being woken up in the middle of the night.
He opened the door, surprised at the sight. Alex was standing there, wearing nothing but one of Stiles' shirts, a pair of bed shorts, and a pair of grey socks with trainers, the shoelaces not tied up.
"Alex?" Stiles asked softly, his eyes scanning Alex's face. "What are you doing here? It's midnight..."
"I'm aware of that, thank you." Alex replied sarcastically, her tone becoming serious a few seconds later. "I couldn't sleep...can I come in?" She spoke softly.
"Of course." Stiles nodded, opening the door wider for the girl to go inside. Alex walked in, taking off her shoes and placing them on the floor beside Stiles' bed.
She climbed into Stiles' bed, tucking the sheets and blankets over her as she moved closer to the wall. She knew Stiles liked to sleep in the middle.
Stiles closed his door, following Alex and climbing into his bed, gently pulling the girl closer to his chest. Stiles smiled to himself when Alex didn't move away.
Alex relaxed against Stiles' chest, Stiles' arm snaking around Alex's waist tightly. Alex closed her eyes, and soon enough, she fell asleep with ease. Stiles closed his eyes, falling asleep too.
A minute later his eyes fluttered open, only to find Alex gone. He turned around so he was lying on his back and facing the roof.
That's when Stiles realised it was a memory. He missed the girl too much. And he was kicking himself for not telling her the truth.
••••
"Morning." Lucas smiled as he turned to glance at his sister quickly, before turning back to the pancakes that he had just finished making.
"Morning." Alex chuckled, grabbing two plates, two knives, and two forks, placing them down on the table as she sat down. "What's this?"
"Breakfast." Lucas responded simply. "Obviously."
Alex rolled her eyes at her brother's sarcasm. "So I've got a duplicate now?" She referred to her sarcastic personality.
"Must be in the genes." Lucas added as he placed two pancakes on Alex's plate with a spatula, placing the other two on his plate, which was across from Alex's.
"Mom or dads side?" Alex continued with a sarcastic smirk.
"Oh, mom's for sure." Lucas scoffed as he put the pan and spatula in the sink, making a mental note to wash them later.
"This is so great." Alex chuckled, changing the subject as Lucas sat across from her, the Carter siblings beginning to eat their food.
"It really is." Lucas grinned. "Oh, thanks for letting me use the guest room, by the way."
"No problem. It's technically yours, considering no one's used it, and you're staying here now." Alex responded.
Lucas sighed, glancing at his food. "Uh, about that-"
"I didn't know you could cook, wow." Alex cut him off with raised eyebrows. "These pancakes are delicious."
Lucas glanced at her. "Uh, yeah, living in Paris amongst bakers my whole life kinda rubbed off on me."
"You live in Paris?!" Alex exclaimed with wide eyes. "You really do just keep getting better and better, don't you?"
Lucas chuckled. "I'll take the compliment. Plus, I could say the same about you."
"Shut up, you already know everything about me. Tell me about you." Alex responded with a chuckle.
"Alright, alright. There's really nothing to tell, by the way." Lucas spoke, Alex scoffing. "A few years after you were born, mom and dad decided to send me to Paris."
Alex frowned, silently urging her brother to continue speaking.
"Basically, they thought it would be safer for me. Which, in a way, it was." Lucas continued, Alex's frown deepening. "I know about the hunters that killed mom and dad. You were just lucky they didn't kill you."
"Wait, do you know why they killed mom and dad, but not me?" Alex interrupted him.
Lucas nodded. "They were paid."
"By who?" Alex frowned.
"No idea. It doesn't really matter now, because they got killed by one of the alphas in the alpha pack soon after mom and dad died." Lucas explained, Alex raising her eyebrows at the information, along with Lucas' prior knowledge of the alpha pack. "Anyway, I didn't really get to know you well. I do have a photo of us, though. I bring it everywhere with me."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small photograph, handing it to Alex, who gently took it.
Alex's gaze softened at the sight of her family. Alex and Lucas' mother was carrying Alex as a baby, a younger version of Lucas standing next to them, and their father standing next to Lucas.
Alex felt herself tear up slightly. It was the only photo she had seen of all of them together. Of course, she didn't know her brother existed until the previous day, but it was still surreal to the girl.
"Holy shit." The girl whispered to herself as she gave Lucas the photo back, willing herself not to cry.
"It was the last time I saw you." Lucas spoke softly, Alex glancing at him. She placed her hand on his, Lucas glancing at her.
"We're together now. That's all that matters." Alex sent her brother a smile, Lucas smiling back. "We're in this together."
After a moment, Lucas spoke. "We can photocopy the picture of you want."
Alex chuckled at her brother as she took her hand off his. "That may have been the best thing you've said all day."
"Probably." Lucas chuckled.
••••
Alex frowned as she received a call that wasn't from Stiles. "Kira?"
"Alex, thank god." Kira's worried voice spoke from the other side. "I know you're mad at us, but we're at the hospital, all of us, except Malia and Lydia, but that's not the point- we need your help. All of us. Liam's here too. Come quick."
"Liam's there? What's going on?" Alex's frown deepened. "Kira?"
"Just come. Please." Kira responded before she hung up, Alex glancing at Lucas.
"Who was it?" Lucas asked curiously.
"My friends need my help." Alex responded with a frown.
••••
Alex and Lucas roared, the two werewolves immediately charging at the Berserker. Alex glanced around the roof quickly as Lucas began fighting Kate's creature.
Alex observed Kira in a corner, trying not to get attacked, her katana on the other side of the roof. Liam was passed out on the floor.
Kira sighed in relief at the sight of Alex. She stood up slowly, Lucas growling at the creature, while Alex woke Liam up.
"Liam, run." Alex spoke, Liam frowning in confusion at the sight of Alex.
"Alex?" Liam frowned. He was in his werewolf form. So was Alex.
"Liam, run!" Kira exclaimed.
"Get out of here!" Lucas added loudly, Liam already knowing that he was Alex's brother everyone was talking about.
Alex growled as she helped Kira and Lucas fight the creature again.
Liam growled, standing up slowly. He roared at the creature, his claws out as he charged at the Berserker.
••••
Alex, Lucas, Kira, and Liam ran back inside the hospital, Alex and Lucas stopping, Liam and Kira stopping too.
"What are you guys doing? Why did we stop?" Kira frowned, glancing between the two Carter siblings confusedly.
"I'm not ready to talk to them yet." Alex responded, referring to Scott and Stiles. "I know it may seem childish to hold a grudge, but..." She let her voice trail off.
"We get it." Liam finished for her, sending a small smile to the girl, Alex sending one back.
"Thanks." Alex responded. "But don't let us stop you."
"Thank you for helping us." Kira smiled.
Alex and Lucas nodded as a way of saying 'no problem'.
"It was the least we could do." Lucas spoke, glancing between Kira and Liam.
"Uh, guys?" Alex added before Liam and Kira could continue walking. "Can you just not tell them we were here? Please?"
Liam and Kira shared a glance before nodding, Alex smiling at the two. "Thanks again."
"Anytime, Alex." Liam nodded.
••••
"Hey, Alex, can I talk to you for a sec?" Lucas asked Alex, who nodded. "I wanted to say something earlier...I can't stay here long because I'm moving back to Paris."
Alex's heart dropped in her chest at his words. "What?" She asked softly.
"I can't stay here. It's too dangerous. And I would ask you to come with me, but I know how much you love your friends. Despite only meeting them once." Lucas sighed.
Alex frowned. "But-"
"You have a great thing going for you here, sis. Don't give it up for me." Lucas replied softly. "Plus, we can visit each other over break."
Alex sighed, knowing she couldn't compete with Lucas. Plus, he was right. Alex loved her friends more than anything.
Alex glanced at the ground. "When do you leave?"
"Two days." Lucas answered.
"Okay..." Alex spoke softly.
"I'll see you in the morning, alright?" Lucas whispered after a moment, Alex nodding softly as Lucas walked out of the room.
••••
Alex was standing over Stiles' desk, glancing at the dead pool. She was waiting for Stiles to get back.
As if on cue, Stiles walked in his room, stopping in surprise at the sight of Alex.
"Hey." He spoke softly, Alex not returning his glance. "Where've you been?"
"Talking to Lucas." Alex answered, her voice quiet.
"Okay...what's going on?" Stiles asked.
Alex sighed, Stiles walking closer to her.
"He's leaving." Alex answered, picking up the dead pool and going over to Stiles' murder board.
Stiles frowned.
"I just met him, and now he's leaving." Alex added quietly.
"When is he going?" Stiles asked softly.
"In two days." Alex responded, placing tape over the top of the paper, but not sticking it on the board yet. She faced Stiles. "That's the common theme."
Stiles frowned in confusion as Alex explained. "Everyone leaves me. Everyone. And I'm not trying to victimise myself, or act in any way self centred, but it's true." She started, feeling herself tear up as she continued, her voice beginning to waver.
"And I hate to use him as an example, but take Isaac. He broke up with me, and I was the reason for it. And now, my only living family member, who I just got to know is leaving me too. After a day." Alex felt a tear slide down her cheek, Stiles' gaze softening immediately.
"Lex-"
"It's- it's like I have an...effect or something. I don't know what the hell I did to deserve any of this, but yet, it keeps happening." Alex continued, wiping the tear sliding down her cheek with her own thumb.
Stiles took a step closer to the girl. "Lex, you haven't done anything, okay? It's not you. It's never you."
"Maybe it is." Alex replied, Stiles frowning as his gaze flickered from Alex's eyes.
Alex turned around and stuck the list on the board, walking out of Stiles' room without another word.
