07 • Broken Mirrors And Dates
The day after all the craziness, Nia was actually up early. Mal and Evie were still sleeping when she woke up, so Nia went outside. She found the garden very calming so she went there whenever she felt like she needed to calm down.
The brunette yelped when her eyes were covered. "It's just me." Nia moved his hands from her eyes so she could see again. "God, Ben. You scared me!" He laughed at her. "I didn't mean to scare such a beautiful face." Nia felt her cheeks turning pink and she looked to the ground. Ben lifted her up with this fingers so they were eye to eye. "I was thinking, do you maybe wanna go out with me tonight?" Her eyes widened. "Um, sure." His face lit up as he smiled as bright as a star. "Great. I'll pick you up at 6." He gave her cheek a quick kiss before he walked back to the building.

Later that day, Evie was eager to help Nia get ready for her date. "Sit still. I need to do your blush." She told the brunette. "Keep it simple. Don't want to scare him away." Nia laughed. She wouldn't mind it if she scared him away from here. "Please. My mom taught me how to apply blush before I could talk." Evie scoffed.
"My mom only taught me magic." Mal and Evie looked at the girl with sympathetic looks. They felt bad for her that she never really had a mother. Even though Nia was very young when her mother died, they never really had a good bond. Her mother mostly used her for her own being.
"We're going to need all the family we can get if we don't pull this off." Mal told the two. "My mother's not a barrel og laughs when she doesn't get her way." Evie piped up. "Just ask Snow White."
"Are you afraid of her?" Nia asked her blue-haired friend. "Sometimes." She answered her. "What about you, Mal?" Nia looked at het. "I just really want her to be proud of me." Mal was being as truthful as she could. "She gets so angry with me when I disappoint her. And yeah, she's my mom, so I know she loves me. In her own way." The room turned silent.
"Moving on. Come see." Evie dragged the brunette off her bed and towards the mirror in their room. Nia stared into the mirror and suddenly it was like she was back on the Isle.
"You are so beautiful."
The mirror shattered as she was brought back to their room. "Nia, are you okay?" She breathed very heavily. "I'm fine. I just had a moment." She couldn't get him out of her mind. "I don't think I can do this." There was a knock on the door and Nia started to panic. "Of course you can. You're Nia. You're strong, fearless and don't let anything get to you. You can do this." Both Evie and Mal pulled her into a hug.
Nia went to the door to open it. She looked back at her friends before she turned the knob around and opened the door. On the other side stood a speechless Ben. "For the first time, I understand the difference between pretty and beautiful." The brunette's cheeks turned red and she looked to the ground. "I hope you like bikes." He said and help up two helmets. "Are you kidding? I love them." The prince reached for her hand and they walked out.

The pair of brunettes walked down a wooden bridge that they had gone to. "Tell me something about yourself." Ben told her, walking behind her. "What do you want to know?" Nia asked him. "What's your middel name?" She turned around to look at the prince. "Gordoun." She told him all serious. "Really?" Nia nodded her head. "I got it from my dad." The petit brunette walked backwards on the bridge not breaking eye contact with Ben. "Mines Florian." She chuckled slightly. "How prince-like" She laughed.
After a few times of Nia tripping, they finally reached where Ben's surprise was. Nia closed her eyes and Ben guided her. "You ready?" He asked. The brunette nodded, squeezing his hand that had been interwined with her own a few seconds ago. "Open." Nia slowly opened her eyes and took in the beautiful sight in front of her. "Go on." Ben softly told her, letting her go ahead of him.
"Is this your first time?"
"I had a boyfriend back at the Isle, but things ended badly." Ben laughed at her. "I meant, is this your first time eating a jelly donut?" Nia looked at him. "Is it bad?" She asked him. "You got a," he leaned over trying to brush something off of her lips. "Just a, um." He leaned back when he couldn't get it off. "I mean, yeah, do this." He licked his lips, Nia mimicking his movements. "Gone?" He nodded at her. "You can't take me anywhere, I guess." They both laughed slightly.
"You know, I've done all the talking. Your turn." He leaned over to her. "I really don't know much about you. Tell me something." Nia sighed, trying to think of anything to say. "Well, I'm 16. Only child and I have only ever lived in one place." Ben smiled. "Me too. We have so much in common already." The brunette laughed. "Trust me. We do not." He looked at her confused. "And now you're gonna be king." She tried to lighten the mood. "Yeah."
Ben got silent. "What?" Nia asked him, wondering what was wrong. "A crown doesn't make you a king." He told her. "It kind of does." She slightly laughed. "No it," He stopped up. "Your mother was one of the most evil people in the world, and I've got the poster parents for goodness. But we're not automatically like them. We get to choose who were going to be." Nia slowly nodded, trying to catch on where this was going. "And right now, I can look into your eyes and I can tell you're not evil. I can see it." Oh boy, was he wrong about that.
"Let's go for a swim." Nia looked at him wide eyed. "What? Right now?" He nodded at her. "Yeah, right now." Ben grinned. "I think I'm just gonna stay here." Truth was, Nia was scared of water. "No, no, no. Come on." Ben tried to convince her. "I think I'm going to stay behind and try a strawberry. I've literally never tried a strawberry before." She informed don't even think about it as she picked up a strawberry. "Don't eat all of them." Ben told her as he walked away.
"Are those little crowns on your shorts?" Nia called out to him when he had reached the top of the waterfall. "Maybe." She laughed and watched as he jumped into the water.
Nia turned to face the little picnic setup. She felt conflicted. She was starting to like it here, but the Isle was her home. She didn't know what to chose. The good or the bad. Her heart was torn. She wanted to go back, so badly, but she couldn't betray her friends here. Could she?
The petit brunette turned to where she last saw Ben trying to find him. "Ben?" She called out when she couldn't see him anywhere. "Ben?" He didn't her. Nia was starting to get worried. "Ben!" She screamed, starting to panic. She took a deep breath before jumping into the water. Her fear taking over her body as she tried to stay on the surface, but failed.
Ben noticed the girl struggling so he picked her up and carried her to the concrete. "Dammit, Ben. You scared me!" She pushed him back. "You can't swim?" Ben asked her, confusion in his voice. "No!"
"You live on an island!"
"Yeah, with a barrier around it and I'm terrified of water." Nia pushed her wet hair back. "And you still tried to save me?" Ben asked. Nia looked at don't even think about it annoyed. "Yeah. And do you thank me?" She asked. "No! All I get, is soaking wet!"
"And, uh, this fancy rock." Ben held up a shining, silver stone. "It's yours. Make a wish and throw it back in the lake." Out of anger, she threw the stone back to the water. Nia stood up shivering from the cold, when all of sudden Ben wrapped his jacket around her. It was huge on her, something she was thankful for. They sat back down at the blanket, Nia looking away from Ben as she felt him touching a few strands of her brown hair. "Uh, Nia." She looked at him "I told you that I loved you." She stared into his green eyes. "What about you?" He asked her. "Do you love me?"
She didn't know what to answer. Nia was confused. Did she love him? "I don't know." She looked away. She had only ever loved one person before. It felt like she was betraying him just being on a date with someone other than him. She truly loved him, with all of her heart, but it was over now.
Ben reached under her chin, making her look at him. "Maybe I can help you."
