Ch. 33 Christmas at the Malfoys
The early morning light filtered through the heavy curtains of Malfoy Manor, casting a soft glow over the grand estate. Inside, the stillness of the morning was broken by the light pitter-patter of footsteps as Dobby, the Malfoy family's house-elf, hurried down the hallways. His large, bat-like ears perked up with excitement as he approached the doors of the children's rooms, one by one, gently knocking to wake them.
"Lady Ruby! Master Harry! Master Draco! Wake up, wake up! It is Christmas, and Master Lucius and Mistress Narcissa are waiting for you in the living room!" Dobby's voice, filled with enthusiasm, echoed through the halls.
Ruby stirred from her sleep, blinking at the warm, flickering light of the enchanted candles in her room. She rubbed her eyes, a smile creeping onto her face as she remembered what day it was. Christmas. Quickly, she slipped out of bed, wrapping herself in a cozy robe before heading out to meet the others.
Harry was already awake, sitting on the edge of his bed, rubbing his eyes as Dobby's voice reached his ears. He had been dreaming of Christmas morning, the anticipation building since the night before. With a grin, he quickly approached the door, meeting Ruby in the hallway.
Draco, on the other hand, stretched lazily in bed before finally deciding to rise. He had always enjoyed Christmas at the Manor, knowing that his parents went all out to make it special. With a yawn, he followed Harry and Ruby downstairs.
As the three children entered the living room, their eyes widened in awe. Before them stood a massive Christmas tree adorned with sparkling ornaments, twinkling lights, and garlands that shimmered like silver and gold. Beneath the tree, an abundance of presents was piled high, each carefully wrapped and labeled.
"Merry Christmas!" Lucius and Narcissa greeted them warmly, standing near the tree with warm smiles. Narcissa's eyes gleamed with maternal pride as she watched the children approach the mountain of gifts.
"Some of these are from us," Lucius explained, gesturing to the presents, "but many are from your school friends."
Draco, always eager, was the first to dive into his gifts. He unwrapped each one carefully, revealing luxury clothing from his parents, a set of Exploding Snap card games from Harry, and a beautifully crafted Wizard Chess set from Ruby. Draco's face lit up with genuine surprise and delight as he admired each gift. A silver knitted sweater from Ron, courtesy of Molly Weasley, brought an unexpected smile to his face. The French sweets and Potions book from Hermione made him chuckle, remembering their shared Potions classes. Other gifts from his friends—sweets, trinkets, and keepsakes—added to the moment's warmth.
Next, it was Harry's turn. He carefully unwrapped the luxury clothing from Lucius and Narcissa, feeling a bit overwhelmed by their generosity. Draco's gift, a book on offensive and defensive magic, piqued his interest immediately. But Ruby's charm bracelet touched him the most—each charm representing a part of their bond: a rose, a golden snitch, a snake, and a honey badger. Ron's dark green sweater, knit by Molly, made Harry chuckle, and the enchanted photo album from Hagrid brought tears to his eyes. The images of his parents—young, vibrant, and full of life—were a precious gift that he would treasure forever. His friends' other gifts—sweets, books, and magical gadgets—only added to the morning's joy.
Finally, it was Ruby's turn. She unwrapped the luxury clothing, shoes, makeup, and a rare book about magical creatures from Lucius and Narcissa, her eyes shining with appreciation. Harry's enchanted music box played a soft, calming tune, instantly easing any stress she might have felt. Draco's gift, a magical camera, and a blank photo album made her grin as she imagined capturing memories at Hogwarts. The golden yellow sweater from Ron, with the letter 'R' and a rose design, was particularly charming. Her friends had also sent her thoughtful gifts—sweets, books, and small tokens that reminded her of their friendship.
Just as they were about to head to the dining room for breakfast, Draco noticed a lone gift under the tree, its wrapping a little different from the rest. "Hey, Harry," he called, picking it up. "This one's for you."
Harry raised an eyebrow as he took the gift from Draco. It was light, and inside, he found a letter addressed to him. He carefully opened it, reading the words that said the gift had belonged to his father, James, and was now passed on to him. Curiosity piqued, Harry unwrapped the package to reveal a beautiful, shimmering cloak. He hesitated momentarily before slipping his hand inside, only to see it disappear.
"An Invisibility Cloak," Harry whispered in awe.
Lucius, observing quietly, stepped forward with a wary expression. "Allow me to check it first," he said, drawing his wand. He cast a spell over the cloak, his frown deepening as he detected a compulsion charm hidden within. Lucius cleansed the cloak of any malevolent magic with a flick of his wand. "It's clean now," he said, handing it back to Harry. "Use it wisely. This cloak seems to be a family heirloom if it belonged to your father."
Harry nodded, his gratitude mingled with a sense of responsibility. He slipped the cloak over his shoulders, and Ruby gasped as his body disappeared, leaving only his head floating mid-air. Draco, wide-eyed, exchanged a knowing look with Ruby, his mind racing with possibilities for their adventures at Hogwarts.
Sensing the moment had passed, Dobby quietly gathered the children's gifts and placed them in their respective rooms. "Master, Mistress, breakfast is ready," he announced, leading the way to the dining room.
As they sat down to eat, the room filled with warmth, laughter, and the spirit of Christmas. All thoughts of dark lords, ancient magic, and distant dangers were forgotten for that moment. The children were simply that—children enjoying the joy of the holiday, surrounded by those who loved them.
Several hours later, it is nighttime. The flickering flames of the fireplace cast a warm glow over the cozy room in Malfoy Manor, where Ruby, Harry, and Draco were gathered. The three children sat comfortably on plush armchairs, each holding a steaming mug of hot chocolate, the rich aroma of cocoa mingling with the scent of the crackling wood.
"So, what did you think of your gifts?" Ruby asked, her eyes bright as she sipped from her mug.
Draco grinned, setting his cup down on the small table beside him. "I loved them, especially the Wizard Chess set you gave me, Ruby. I can't wait to beat you both at it."Harry chuckled, taking a sip of his hot chocolate. "You'll have to practice, Draco. I've been getting pretty good, you know. Your father and I have played a lot, and he has told me that my skills have been improving."
"Is that so?" Draco smirked, his competitive spirit already ignited. "Well, we'll see about that."
Ruby smiled at their banter, feeling content. "And how about the book Draco gave you, Harry? It looks like it can come in handy."
Harry nodded, his expression stern. "It will. Defensive and offensive magic is something I want to get better at, especially with everything that's been happening."
Draco's gaze shifted to Harry, a look of understanding passing between them. "Yeah, I get that. We need to be prepared for anything."
The mood in the room grew contemplative as they thought about the challenges that awaited them back at Hogwarts. Before they could dwell too long on it, the door creaked open, and Dobby appeared, his wide eyes filled with excitement.
"Master Draco, Master Harry, Lady Ruby," Dobby began, his voice eager, "Dobby has brought you letters! So many letters from your school friends!" With a wave of his hand, a bundle of envelopes appeared in the air, hovering in front of each child before gently landing in their laps.
"Thanks, Dobby," Draco said, smiling at the house elf.
"Yes, thank you," Ruby added, as Harry nodded in agreement.
Dobby beamed at their gratitude before giving a slight bow. "Dobby will leave you to read your letters in peace," he said before quietly slipping out of the room.
The three children exchanged curious glances before eagerly tearing open their envelopes. The room fell silent as they each read through the letters from their friends.
Harry was the first to speak, holding up Hermione's letter. "Listen to this," he said, clearing his throat. "Hermione learned some exciting stuff about Nicolas Flamel during her trip to France."
Draco and Ruby looked up from their letters, intrigued.
Harry continued reading, "Apparently, Nicolas Flamel is a French wizard and a famous alchemist. He's the only known maker of the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary substance with incredible powers. The Stone produces the Elixir of Life, which has allowed Flamel and his wife, Perenelle, to live for over six hundred years. He even attended Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in his youth and is a close friend of Headmaster Dumbledore."
Ruby's eyes widened. "The Philosopher's Stone? That's what Fluffy must be guarding at Hogwarts."
Draco leaned back in his chair, frowning. "If that's true, then we might be dealing with something even more dangerous than we thought."
Harry's face grew stern as he folded Hermione's letter. "If Voldemort is after the Philosopher's Stone, he's trying to become immortal."
A heavy silence settled over the room as the gravity of their situation sank in. The cheerful atmosphere of moments before had been replaced by a growing sense of unease.
Draco broke the silence, his voice firm. "We have to find out more. If the Stone is really at Hogwarts, we must be ready for whatever might happen."
Ruby nodded, determination flickering in her eyes. "We can't let Voldemort get his hands on it."
Harry agreed his resolve hardening. "We'll keep looking into this. We'll figure out a way to stop him."
The three friends sat quietly for a moment; each lost in their thoughts, the weight of their discovery pressing down on them. They knew their journey was far from over, and the challenges ahead would test them in ways they couldn't imagine. But as they looked at one another, there was a shared understanding—a silent promise to stand together, no matter what came their way.
Finally, Draco cleared his throat, trying to lighten the mood. "Well, we'll worry about that when we return to school. For now, how about we enjoy the rest of Christmas break?"
Harry and Ruby smiled, appreciating the effort to lift their spirits. "Agreed," Ruby said, raising her mug in a toast. "To friendship and stopping Voldemort—one step at a time."
Harry and Draco clinked their mugs with hers, and for a brief moment, they allowed themselves to enjoy the warmth of the fire, the sweetness of their hot chocolate, and the comfort of each other's company.
