Ch. 2 Diagon Alley

Several hours later, it is morning. Sunlight shined upon the Leaky Cauldron and onto one of the bedrooms where Ruby and Harry slept. The sun awakened Ruby from her slumber. She opened her eyes when she felt the warmth of the sun. She stared at the window and realized she wasn't in the basement. She sat up when something around her waist tightened, causing her to look back and see that Harry had his arms around her waist, holding her close to him in his sleep.

Ruby's sapphire blue eyes intently stared at Harry's sleeping form. She saw that he looked relaxed. Her right hand lightly brushed his unruly dark hair, briefly revealing his lightning-like scar. She stayed quiet, remembering what Harry told her about the scar.

" How did you get that scar?" Ruby's voice was filled with curiosity as she and Harry sat on a soft blanket, enjoying a simple meal in their meadow.

" My scar?" Harry rubbed his forehead. " My Aunt Petunia told me that I got it from the car crash that killed my parents," He says.

" Your scar reminds me of a lightning bolt," Ruby gently brushed the scar with her finger, remembering seeing an image of a lightning bolt from one of her stepsister's old picture books.

Harry's emerald green eyes intently stared at Ruby as she studied his lightning-like scar.

" I like my scar because it helps me remember my parents," He says, causing Ruby's sapphire blue eyes to look at him.

" It also makes you look cool." Ruby giggled, causing Harry to smile, thinking her giggle was like a wind chime.

" Morning, Ruby," Harry's voice brought Ruby back to reality.

Ruby's sapphire blue eyes blinked, seeing Harry looking at her peacefully.

" Morning, Harry," She smiled.

" Did you sleep comfortably?" Harry asked, letting go of Ruby and sitting up.

" I slept comfortably for once," Ruby nodded. " It's my first time sleeping on a bed instead of a concrete floor," Her hands gently brushed the bed sheets on the bed.

Harry's gaze dimmed, remembering how he found Ruby last night.

" Today is my birthday," He says, changing the subject.

Ruby gasped, looking at Harry.

" Really! Happy Birthday, Harry," She hugs him tightly.

Harry smiled, carefully hugging Ruby. He was happy she was the first to wish him a happy birthday.

" I need to get you a gift," Ruby says, letting go of Harry.

" No need. Waking up next to you is the best birthday gift ever," Harry smiled.

Ruby giggled, ruffling Harry's unruly dark hair.

" I'm hungry," She says as her stomach growls.

" Let's get dressed, and then we can go downstairs and have something to eat," Harry says, getting out of bed and stretching.

" I'll dress in the bathroom," He grabs the set of clothes Tom gave him last night and walks towards the bathroom.

Ruby got out of bed and stretched. She winced a little when she felt a sharp pain in her lower back.

She takes a couple of breaths and grabs the clothes that Tom gave her last night. She puts it on the bed and takes off her pajamas. She sets the pajamas on the side and puts on the clothes.

" Are you dressed?" Harry asked from inside the bathroom.

" Finished!" Ruby said, putting on her shoes.

Harry opens the door and looks, seeing Ruby dressed in a long-sleeve brown sweater shirt, emerald green pants, and brown boots. Her curly red hair was in a messy ponytail with bangs in front.

Ruby turns and sees Harry wearing a long-sleeved dark blue button sweater with a white shirt underneath, dark grey pants, and black boots.

" You dressed up nicely," Ruby says, walking up to Harry and patting his shoulders.

Harry smiled at Ruby.

" You look lovely," He says.

" Thank you!" Ruby blushed and smiled. " Let's go eat!" She grabbed Harry's hand and walked out of the room.

Harry grabbed the backpack with their belongings inside before he and Ruby left the room.

The two children walk down the stairs and see Tom alone, cleaning the pub.

" Good morning. Tom, wasn't it?" Ruby asked, looking at Tom.

Tom turns and sees Ruby and Harry walking towards him. He smiles, seeing the two dressed nicely after showering and resting.

" Yes, my name is Tom. I can make you two something to eat. What would you like to eat?" He asked while guiding the two children to a table.

" What's on the menu?" Ruby asked as she and Harry sat across from each other.

Tom snapped his finger, and two menus appeared before them, causing Ruby and Harry to look at each other in awe.

" So, cool!" Ruby smiled while Harry nodded.

" You two will learn how to do something like that at Hogwarts," Tom says.

Ruby and Harry looked at one another when Tom mentioned Hogwarts, excited to learn and master magic. They grabbed the menu and studied it.

" I want a pancake breakfast and Orange juice," Ruby says, closing the menu and handing it to Tom.

Tom nodded and then looked at Harry.

" I want the same thing as hers," Harry says, closing the menu and handing it to Tom.

" Coming right up," Tom turns and walks towards the kitchen to make their breakfast.

" I wonder how we'll get to Diagon Alley from here. The map says to get to Diagon Alley is through the Leaky Cauldron," Ruby looks at Harry.

" Maybe there is a portal to Diagon Alley? And to access it, we need to tell Tom," Harry pulls out the two envelopes from inside the backpack and hands one to Ruby.

Ruby takes her Hogwarts Acceptance letter and opens it. She pulls out the school supplies list.

" It says we need school uniforms—three sets of plain black work robes, one plain black pointed hat for day wear, one pair of protective gloves, either dragon hide or something similar, and one winter black cloak with silver fastenings," Ruby says.

" We need eight textbooks—the Standard Book of Spells for First Year by Miranda Goshawk, a History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot, Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling, A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore, Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander, and the Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble," Harry reads.

" We need a wand-" Ruby smiled, excited at having a wand.

"-A Cauldron, Phials, and Brass scales for Potions," Harry looked curious.

"-A telescope and star chat for Astronomy," Ruby looked intrigued by the idea of being able to look at and study stars and planets.

"-And we can have an owl, cat, or toad as a pet," Harry looked at Ruby, wondering what kind of pet she'd want.

" I want to have a cat as a pet, but it said that we need to have an owl for written communication," Ruby looked at Harry.

" You can get a cat, and I'll get an owl. You can use my owl to send a letter to someone or something," Harry says.

" Really!" Ruby's sapphire blue eyes sparkled.

Harry nodded, liking seeing Ruby get excited.

" Okay," Ruby smiled.

Tom walks out of the kitchen with a tray of food and drinks. He approaches the table where Ruby and Harry sit and sets the food and drinks in front of them.

" Thank you, Tom," Ruby smiled while Harry nodded.

" You welcome. Have a good breakfast," Tom turns and walks away to continue cleaning the pub.

Ruby and Harry put the letters back in the envelopes. Ruby handed hers to Harry, and he put it in the backpack.

The two children ate their breakfast in silence. They saw patrons start to enter the pub, and the environment began to smell of food and alcohol.

" We should get going," Harry says, looking at the older adults warily.

" Yeah," Ruby nodded.

The two children grabbed the dirty dishes, stood up, and walked towards the trash can, throwing away the trash. They then placed the dirty dishes on top.

" Let's go tell Tom to take us to Diagon Alley," Harry says, grabbing Ruby's hand since the pub started to get crowded.

Ruby nodded, walking with Harry to Tom.

" Tom, can you tell us how to get to Diagon Alley so we can get our school supplies?" Harry asked, looking at Tom, with Ruby standing behind him.

" Follow me. I'll take you to the entrance to Diagon Alley," Tom says, having an employee tend to the patrons.

Ruby and Harry followed Tom to the back of the pub. They saw Tom pull out a wand and tap on the brick wall. Their eyebrows rose, and their eyes widened when they saw the brick wall turn into an archway, revealing an alleyway to a crowded street.

" This pathway will take you to Diagon Alley, where you can get your school supplies. I suggest going to Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The Goblins will help you exchange Muggle Money for Wizarding Money so you can buy your school supplies," Tom says.

" Thank you," Ruby smiled.

" Have a good day, you two," Tom waved goodbye, watching the two children walk towards the crowded street.

Ruby and Harry walked and looked at their surroundings. They saw various shops to their left, such as a cauldron shop, Eeylops' Owl Emporium, a magical instrument shop, and Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor. To their right, they saw an Apothecary, Quality Quidditch Supplies, a stationary shop, Flourish & Blotts, and Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions.

Ruby stopped walking when she saw a massive building that resembled a bank. She recognized the structure in one of her stepsister's old history books.

" Harry! That's Gringotts Wizarding Bank that Tom told us about," She pointed.

Harry stopped walking and looked in the direction where Ruby was pointing.

" How do you know?" He asked.

" I saw a similar picture of a bank in one of my stepsister's old history books," Ruby explained.

Harry nodded, walking towards Gringotts with Ruby beside him. He grabbed the door handle and opened the massive door. He let Ruby get in first, and he followed her afterward.

Ruby entered the building and looked at her surroundings in awe, finding the architecture beautiful.

Harry looked at his surroundings and saw that the employees were goblins, as Tom had mentioned.

" What do we even say?" Ruby asked, looking worried since she didn't know what to do.

" The goblins shouldn't cast us aside if we tell them that we are new to the wizarding world," Harry looks at Ruby.

Ruby nodded, walking with Harry to a bank teller.

" Hello, we are new to the Wizarding World and would like to open a Bank Account," Harry says.

The goblin bank teller stares at them.

" What are your names?" The Goblin asked.

Harry and Ruby looked at each other.

" My name is Harry Potter, and her name is Ruby Rose," Harry responded.

The Goblin intently stared at Harry when he said his name.

Ruby looked at the Goblin nervously, causing Harry to stand his ground and look back at the Bank Teller intently.

" We need DNA confirmation. Standard procedure," The Goblin says.

" What do we have to do?" Harry asked.

The Goblin snapped his finger, and a scroll with a pin on the side appeared before him.

" Prick your finger with this pin and pour three droplets of blood on this blank scroll," He says.

Harry looks at Ruby.

" I'll go first, and then you can go, okay," He smiled.

" Okay," Ruby nodded, curious how Harry would do it.

Harry grabs the pin and pricks his finger. He saw some blood start to come out. He puts his bleeding finger above the blank scroll and squeezes his finger a little, seeing some blood fall on the paper.

Ruby stared in awe when the blood started forming words on the scroll.

Harry's eyes blinked when he read his parents' names and saw they were magical like him.

" Heh. The Wizarding Savior has finally returned to the Wizarding World," The Goblin says while looking at the scroll.

" Wizarding Savior?" Harry asked while Ruby looked at Harry and the Goblin curiously.

" Since it says that you lived in the Muggle World, it's understandable that you don't know how famous you are in the Wizarding World," The Goblin looks at Harry.

" What did I do?" Harry asked, glancing at Ruby.

Ruby's hand tightly grasped Harry's when she saw him looking at her.

" On October 31, 1981, your parents, Lord and Lady Potter, stood against a Dark Wizard named Lord Voldemort. They sacrificed their lives to protect their only son, you. You became famous that night because you were the first living person to survive his infamous killing curse. I heard that your mother placed a powerful protection spell that caused the killing curse to reflect on Lord Voldemort, killing him, but his body was nowhere to be found to confirm his demise." The Goblin explained.

Harry blankly stared at the Goblin when he heard the truth of his parents' death.

Ruby looked at Harry worriedly since she remembered him telling her that his Aunt Petunia said that his parents were killed in a horrific car crash because they were drunks.

Harry's glasses shined, and he was furious to discover the truth about his parents' demise and how he became an orphan. He lets go of Ruby's hand. His hands tightened into fists, and his whole body shook.

Ruby hugged Harry's arm and gently laid her head against his shoulder to comfort him.

Harry looks at Ruby from the corner of his emerald green eyes.

Ruby looked at him with worried, sapphire blue eyes.

Harry calmed down, not wanting Ruby to get worried.

" Thank you for telling me about this. I didn't know what happened to my parents. My mother's Muggle sister told me that they were drunks and died in a car crash that night," He explained while looking at the Goblin.

The Goblin nodded and noticed that Harry would have destroyed the things surrounding him out of anger with his magic but didn't because of the beautiful young girl hugging his arm.

" Ruby can do her DNA test now," Harry says.

Ruby lets go of Harry and turns to stare at the Goblin. She steps forward with Harry standing behind her.

The Goblin saw Harry keeping a close eye on Ruby while looking at him with a threatening gaze, as though he'd get punished if he made the young girl uncomfortable.

" Same procedure," The Goblin tells Ruby.

Ruby nodded, taking the pin and pricking her finger with it. Blood came out, and she poured the droplets onto the blank scroll, where the blood formed words.

Ruby frowned when she saw that neither of her parents had any magic to them, which made her wonder where she got her magical abilities.

" How is it that my birth parents don't have magic, but I do?" She asked, looking at the Goblin.

" It could be that you had a Squib on either side of your family that could have passed the magical gene onto you," The Goblin says.

" Is there a way to know?" Ruby asked, wanting to know the Wizarding Family that passed their magical gene onto her.

" Yes. There is a test called the Inheritance Test that lets you know what families you came from and what you inherited from them," The Goblin responded.

" How much to take the Inheritance Test?" Ruby asked.

The Goblin looked at Harry and saw that he was curious.

" Free of charge for new Wizarding Folk," He says.

Ruby and Harry looked at one another.

" We would like to take our Inheritance test," The two children replied while looking at the Goblin.
