Finding Sunset

It took Garrett awhile, but eventually he found the class that he was supposed to attend which was literature class. He went into the class, and there was his sister, Sunset Shimmer, in her human form. Garrett didn't recognize her at first. But she had the same long fiery red and yellow hair, and the same cyan eyes. She looked older now but also, broken. Garrett noticed there were various bruises all over her body. She had a joyless and defeated look on her face. Garrett looked at his sister sadly, and he noticed there was a desk on her right side. Apparently nobody wanted to sit next to Sunset. Garrett wandered to the desk and said to his sister for the first time in 10 years, "is this seat taken?"

Sunset looked at Garrett as if he was just another student, and said with little emotion, "no." Garrett sat in the desk and said, "thanks." Sunset emotionlessly muttered, "mmf." Garrett once again looked at Sunset sadly, thinking, "I have a bad feeling those friends Twilight told me about didn't want to befriend my sister... Poor Sunset... She doesn't even realize I'm alive and looking right at her..." Hours later, school ended, and Sunset was once again cleaning up the damage she had caused at the back of the school during Fall Formal when she became that demon. Garrett wandered over to Sunset and said, "uh hi. I spoke to Principal Celestia a couple hours ago and she agreed to let me help you clean the damage here. Figured it could get the work more finished. Hope you don't mind if I help." Sunset looked at Garrett and said with unemotional exhaustion, "I don't care..." Garrett then helped Sunset with cleaning up. He was no stranger to getting his hooves dirty when cleaning up messes back when he was in prison. Or in this case, he'd have to get his hands dirty. Garrett offered his hand to Sunset and said, "my name's Billy Mero Capper, by the way. It's nice to meet you Sunset." He gave a genuinely friendly smile. Sunset looked at Garrett and said, "look Billy, I don't know why you're pretending to be nice to me. I don't know if you know this, but everyone in this school hates me! I'm basically a monster who doesn't deserve any kindness whatsoever. If you're looking to start some sort of friendship, I would advise you not get attached to me. People see that you're friends with me, they'll make your life a living hell as they're making mine. Except unlike you, I deserve it. So just don't bother being friends with me."

"Well that's a bit of a problem," said Garrett, "I think I might be stuck to you like honey. You're not going to be able to get rid of me that easily." Sunset rolled her eyes and sarcastically said, "gee, I'm so lucky... Trust me Billy, I'm not worth defending." Garrett rhetorically asked, "would you rather deal with the bullies who are antagonizing you, or someone who actually gives a damn about your well-being?" Sunset countered, "how do I know you're not lying when you say you care about my well-being?" Garrett thought about that question, wondering if he was a hypocrite for not revealing that he was her brother this instant. But what if he revealed he was her brother and she thought he was a lying asshole, mocking her? "I'm not lying when I say I don't think you're a monster, Sunset." Garrett said, looking at his sister with sincerity. "You want to get bullied for being around me? Be my guest," grumbled Sunset as she looked down at her work. "I'm no stranger to bullies picking fights," admitted Garrett, "these people would look petty compared to the jerks I've faced over the years."

A couple hours later, detention was over for Sunset. "See you tomorrow, Sunset!" Garrett enthusiastically said. Sunset didn't even acknowledge his presence. Garrett frowned sadly. "She's acting just like me when I was 13," he said to himself, "it's gonna take a lot to get her out of that depressive funk she's in..." Suddenly, Applejack said behind him, "you ain't from around here, are ya sugar cube?" Garrett yelped and turned around, seeing Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity, and their other friends Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash. "Oh hello ladies..." Garrett awkwardly said, "what are you doing here after school?" Rainbow crossed her arms and said, "cut the crap, Billy. What's your play here? Where are you really from?" Garrett smiled nervously and said, "well... I spent a lot of my life in Abu Dhabi..." Applejack shook her head and said, "that's a lie. Ah know you ain't from Abu Dhabi. Ah doubt Billy's yer real name."

"And what kinda guy just calls my friends, human females?" Pinkie asked, "I mean, it's kinda funny in a fish out of water kind of sense..." Rainbow snapped, "Pinkie you're not helping." She pointed at Garrett and said, "you look a lot like Sunset Shimmer. And you seem to be getting quite friendly with her. So who are you really? Spill the beans." Garrett sighed in defeat, "okay, you caught me. The truth is, I'm actually from Equestria, the same dimension Sunset and Princess Twilight originated from. My real name is Garrett, and I'm Sunset's younger brother." The girls gasped in shock. "No way!" Pinkie said in shock. "Actually, I can see a family resemblance," said Rarity. "Oh can you now?" Rainbow sarcastically asked, "if you're Sunset's brother, how come she never mentioned you?" Garrett shrugged and replied, "to be fair, I was imprisoned at a young age, so she and our parents assumed that I died in prison. But I survived prison and got out." Applejack's skepticism faded away, and she said, "he ain't lyin'. What ah wanna know is, why are you here, Garrett?" The stallion sighed and admitted, "Princess Twilight sent me to find Sunset and to reach out to her, convince her to come home with me. Don't you ladies get it? She and I were robbed of years we could have spent together. I want to reunite with her because I really miss my sister. I love her, because she's family." The girls looked at each other, feeling guilty over turning their backs on Sunset. By refusing to befriend Sunset, they were practically letting down Princess Twilight.

Fluttershy gently placed her hand on Garrett's shoulder and said, "I understand why you want to save your sister, Garrett. Your heart's in the right place, wanting to help Sunset. I hope you succeed in your endeavor." Garrett smiled and said, "thanks Fluttershy. That means a lot."

"Do you have a place to stay for the night?" Fluttershy asked. Garrett hesitated and said, "well... No. I don't." Fluttershy offered, "would you like to stay at my house as a guest? My parents won't mind." Garrett smiled and said, "thanks Fluttershy. I appreciate that." Applejack tipped her hat and said, "hey Garrett, good luck reaching out to your sister. You're gonna need it."
