Come To Your Senses
It had been about three days since Sunset lashed out at Garrett after he had attempted to reach out to her. She went to school, masking her roaring anger with a defeated and emotionless face. Garrett kept on attempting to reach out to his sister, but Sunset gave him the cold shoulder, sometimes glaring at him. But eventually, the anger subsided from Sunset, and she came to her senses, the logical side started to come into her head. Sunset was at her locker thinking to herself. "Maybe I was a little harsh on Billy," she thought, "what if he was telling the truth? How could he have known about me and Princess Twilight? In all my years I've attended this school, I've never seen that guy before. So it would be impossible for him to know about Equestria. And Twilight would have to be specific about me if she were to send him. And not once did I mention my brother Garrett to anyone. Mostly because I thought he was dead... What if he survived and he's telling the truth? Maybe I should give him a chance and give myself the benefit of the doubt..."
Suddenly, Sunset's train of thought was interrupted when a hand forcefully grabbed Sunset's shoulder and forced her to look at them. It was Chrysalis. Or at least, her human doppelganger. "Hey shit face," she growled, "did you really think you could put Tirek and Sombra in detention, and get away with it?!?!?!" Sunset decided to ignore her. She turned her back and was ready to walk away when Chrysalis yanked at her hair and said, "bitch, don't you turn your back on me when I'm talking to you, you waste of life!" Sunset glared at Chrysalis and asked, "what do you want, Chrysalis?" The human doppelganger smiled evilly and said, "let's just say I'm going to take some revenge on you for Tirek and Sombra." Chrysalis then slapped Sunset across the face and was ready to start beating on her. But before Chrysalis could punch Sunset in the face, Garrett intervened and grabbed Chrysalis's fist and said, "hey! Leave her alone!"
"You stay out of this, loser!" Chrysalis hissed, "unless you want me to beat you the way Tirek and Sombra did." Garrett glared and said, "I'm not afraid of you. Back off now." Chrysalis smiled evilly and said, "alright then simp, you asked for it! This is going to hurt you more than it's going to hurt me!" Chrysalis then lunged at Garrett and started strangling him. "Stop Chrysalis." A timid but familiar voice said. It was Fluttershy. Garrett grabbed Chrysalis's hands to let go of his neck, breathing intensely. "These losers deserve it," said Chrysalis. Fluttershy then gave her the famous stare and said with assertiveness, "leave them alone!" Chrysalis looked at Sunset and Garrett with hate, and then let Garrett go. She walked away, grumbling to herself. "Are you okay?" Garrett hoarsely asked. "Am I okay? Billy, you could have gotten strangled to death!" Sunset scolded. "He was just trying to defend you Sunset," countered Fluttershy. Of course, she knew that Sunset had slapped Garrett. But Garrett begged her to not tell anyone because he knew that if anyone found out, the backlash against Sunset would be even more severe.
"Even after what I did to you, you're still willing to defend me," said Sunset. "Family doesn't give up on each other," said Garrett. "And no one deserves to get hurt," agreed Fluttershy. Sunset looked at Garrett and sighed, "I think it's time you and I talked, Billy. Let's go to the music room. You and me." She and Garrett then wandered over to the music classroom to talk privately. As they walked, Garrett noticed the various cuts on Sunset's wrists, concerning him. A couple minutes later, Sunset and Garrett were inside the music classroom. Garrett cleared his throat and asked in a serious tone of voice, "Sunset have you been cutting yourself?" Sunset tried to hide the cuts on her arms and asked in reply, "why does it matter to you?"
"Sunset, I've seen plenty of people in prison who have cut themselves because they hated the ruts that they were in," said Garrett, "it was often the beginning of when these prisoners would start killing themselves. I've seen enough death to last me a lifetime. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." When Sunset listened to Garrett's words, he sounded older and wiser. "Well it shouldn't matter to you," said Sunset, "what I want to talk about is you. I've had enough time to think about what you said. I do find it odd that you would know Princess Twilight. Some things do sort of add up. Do Fluttershy and her friends know?" Garrett nodded and said, "yeah. I wasn't exactly subtle when I first interacted with them. But they believed me." Sunset looked at Garrett and said, "if you really are my brother Garrett Shimmer, look me in the eyes and tell me something only my brother and I would know."
Garrett pondered, trying to think of a memory that only he and Sunset would remember when they were both young. It was quite difficult due to the fact that he was in prison at a young age and went through puberty in prison. He only celebrated five birthdays with her and five Hearth's Warmings. But then a light bulb sparked inside of him as one of his favorite memories popped back into his head. "I remember the last Hearth's Warming we spent together before that fateful camping trip gone wrong," said Garrett as he looked at Sunset, "I wasn't sure what kind of gift to buy you since I didn't have any money. There was this nice golden locket necklace shaped like a heart that I thought you would like. I told Pop about the gift and he bought it for me, a gift for you. He let me take all the credit. I just know you loved that gift, and seeing you happy warmed my heart. That was my favorite Hearth's Warming." Sunset looked at Garrett, remembering that locket. It was the one thing she still remembered about her brother. And that's when it hit her like lightning, and Sunset recognized her brother. She touched his face, trying to hold back her tears, and said, "oh my goodness... Garrett... It is you..." Garrett smiled and said, "it is me, Sunset..."
Sunset then hugged Garrett tightly and burst into tears, sobbing. Garrett hugged back, shedding tears of joy. "I thought I lost you," sobbed Sunset, "I'm so sorry I was cold to you... And I'm sorry for cutting myself... I was weak, and hurting inside..." Sunset sobbed more. "I thought I was going to lose you too," said a tearful Garrett, "I missed you so much... I'm not leaving you ever again, Sunset..." He sniffled, crying at the fear of losing his sister, but also crying with joy that he had managed to save her before she could do something that would cause irreparable damage. Sunset sniffled and looked at Garrett. "My little brother," she said, "you've gotten so big." She smiled at Garrett. Garrett chuckled softly and said, "you're all grown up too, Sunset. I'm so glad I saved you."
