Pokemon Regions Worst to Best
Have you ever played a Pokemon game and thought 'Man... I'd love to live here!' Today, I'm going over the 10 Major Pokemon Regions across all the Pokemon games and ranking them Worst to Best based on livability. This will NOT take the games that take place in said region into account. Such as, Pokemon X & Y is regarded as the worst main series game BUT the Kalos region would be highly enjoyable to live in. Now there are 15+ Pokemon Regions, as mentioned above, I'm really only going over the Regions in the main series games AND Regions featured in more than 1 side game (Which is really only the Orre Region). I will not be including Hisui as Hisui is an ancient version of Sinnoh.
Sit tight and enjoy the update!
10. Hoenn
Despite being the region of focus to some of the biggest fan favorite games, I still wouldn't live here. Hoenn is a Japan based region with a crazy climate. This region is 75% water and its next to impossible to traverse this region unless you have a boat even if you have a Pokemon capable of surfing. The climate is tropical resorting in a wildly humid region where it rains AND storms more often times than not. The desert portion of the region can't even be traversed unless you have the proper gear AND there's numerous cities that are either on an active volcano or close enough to said volcano to be affected by it. Yes, some Hoenn inhabitants highly profit off the volcanoes by harvesting volcanic ash to make glass blown antiques, but is one glass blowing business enough to make me wanna live here? Heck no!!! Hoenn is just a complete mess of a region to be living within for its climate alone you literally cannot pay me to live here. Maybe I'd visit in regards to vacationing Hotspots in Hoenn, but I'd never live here.
9. Kanto
Unless you're built different, there's no reason anyone should live here. Kanto is a Japan based region. According to lore, Kanto suffers from the fact that they are a high tech Pokemon Region. How is that a bad thing? Deforestation due to expansion that further explains the lack of Pokemon species present in Kanto and pollution. All of this explains why Kanto imports other Pokemon species to the region most specifically Exeggcutor & the Dratini family. Its also why Kanto Pokemon tend to have regional variants, in fact, most regional variants of Kanto Pokemon ARE the original Pokemon. Kantonian regional variants had to adapt in order to even live here. As of Sword & Shield, it was even confirmed that Moltres, Articuno and Zapdos didn't originate in Kanto. Have you ever stopped to wonder why there's so many Poisonous Pokemon let alone so many pollution related Pokemon in the region? Theres over 20 Poison type Pokemon in this region too lets not forget. Muk is a sewage Pokemon while Weezing contributes to air pollution. Paras and Parasect suffer from a parasite too. Also, let's not forget about their active volcano problem either. The cherry on top is that Kanto is the base of operations for Team Rocket, a crime syndicate hellbent on kidnapping Pokemon and reselling them for profit as this organization doesnt die no matter how many times you attempt to get rid of them. Lastly, in most Pokemon games, the player character moved from one region to another. Most of the time, the player originally lived in Kanto and moved away. THAT should also tell you that Kanto is not a desirable place to live. I think I'd go live somewhere else thank you.
8. Orre
The second to least inhabitable of the 10 regions. Orre is an American based Pokemon region set in southern United States/Arizona Texas area, that is 95% Desert and the focus in two side series games. This region is so uninhabitable due to its harsh desert climate that wild Pokemon CANT survive here. If there's ever a wild Pokemon, it's considered a rarity. Now, this fact isn't entirely weighing it down as in a future game, the region's climate changed enough that wild Pokemon eventually began to flock to the region again, be it primarily pseudo legendaries and 'hardy' types such as Ground, Steel & Rock types BUT atleast Pokemon can live here now. Another downside to this region is just how lawless this region can be. Theres entire towns in Orre that belong to criminals, thugs and illegal activity. It doesnt matter where you live here, nobody is safe from crime. Heck, due to the lack of Pokemon in this region, criminals WILL resort to physical violence. Enough of the cons, lets focus on some pros. The Orre region is considered to be a 'vacation' Hotspot similarly to the Alola Region as primarily retired individuals live here and travellers often frequent this region to experience pro-level Pokemon battling. The Orre region, similarly to Galar, is home to countless Colosseums for everyone of all skill levels to enjoy and is considered a battling hot spot. This region is also known for their rich boating industry AND the availability of industrial yet futuristic technology such as laser fences, larger than life robots and hover vehicles. Why isn't this region ranked lower than Kanto? It's due to how, nowadays, Orre is habitable and has numerous drawing factors such as being a Battling Captial, a retirement Hotspot and their futuristic tech.
7. Sinnoh
Our last region on the list based on Japan, Sinnoh is one of the quieter regions in the Pokemon universe as the only real thing this region is known for are Pokemon Contests & their mining economy. Sinnoh can experience all four seasons, and only the 2nd region able to do so. Most towns in Sinnoh are small & quiet, everyone knows everyone and most businesses are typically family owned and ran. Such as Byron and Roark, Father and Son, owning the mining industry on top of being gymleaders. Sinnoh has some issues though despite how small and quiet the region is. Such as Iron Island, it doesn't have a law enforcement system and is therefore home to criminals and illegal activity, on top of raging Steel type Pokemon. Darkrai & Cresselia, the gods of sleep/dreams, often feuding and giving the inhabitants of Sinnoh recurring nightmares & spouts of time when nobody is able to sleep or the opposite... Some people CANT wake up. Sinnoh also has often issues with roadblocking Psyducks, dense marshlands, snowed in mountain towns and dense fog so bad you cannot see your own hand. Ouch!!! The more I think about it, the less I want to live here.
6. Paldea
Paldea is the newest region to be added to the Pokemon universe as of Scarlet & Violet that is based on Spain and... There's realistically no good or bad reasons to live here. There's few to no drawing points to this region. Unlike the lower ranked regions on this list, Paldea has a tolerable climate that honestly I can't complain about. The climate has a little bit of everything/the ability to contribute to a little bit of everything from snowy mountains, large expanses of islands and sandy beaches, most of the region is grassy plains and plateaus which is also its downfall as the land features do get a bit crazy and not exactly traversable hence why the main mode of transportation in Paldea is... Cyclizar. Yeah, It's canon that cars are rarely used here. Imagine if you were scared of Pokemon, handicapped or have an entire family, you'd be royally screwed when it comes to transportation. What I personally don't enjoy about Paldea would be how the Gym Challenge is only available to members of Uva Academy, aka only to students/children when literally everywhere else in the world the Gym Challenge is available to anyone no matter your age or status. This region also lacks landmarks of any kind. The only drawing points/landmarks I can think of has to be Kofu Lounge, a famous restaurant in Paldea as well as the Treasure Eatery, another restaurant. You also have the issue that Team Star is actively closing off roads and crap just to inconvenience everyone and that there's an insane amount of children, teenagers and lack of adult supervision in this region. Realistically, the only reason anyone should move to Paldea is if you're Going to school here, even then, a good chunk of the Uva students are foreign exchange students.
5. Kalos
Both modern yet rich in history, Kalos is a region based on France with many sights to behold. Kalos is another smaller Pokemon region, often home to the rich and royalty. Most whom live in Kalos typically have a deep family history there and it's rare that people move there, it's more a vacationing Hotspot than anything. Kalos is home to grandiose castles that once housed the royal family, one of them representing the Palace of Versailles. Kalos is also the region where Mega Evolution is most prominent/originated (Depending on which timeline/universe you want to follow). Kalos has great expanses of farmland, more cafes than you can count and a heavy fashion influence with supermodels and boutiques beyond your imagining. Kalos doesn't have anything bad going on when it comes to its climate thankfully, infact, the region is typically really nice and majority of the region can be explored on foot rather than NEEDING to rely on vehicles or Pokemon to get from one point or another. Although I'd rather live in other regions, mainly cause I'm not into fashion, I wouldn't be upset if I lived here.
4. Johto
A better version of Kanto, Johto is also another Japan based region and the neighbor to Kanto. The big difference between Johto & Kanto is that Kanto is high tech while Johto is more 'in the past' in regards to architecture. Johto is very rich in their culture and history from how most of their cities represent historical Japan, the inhabitants respect the culture immensely even having entire festivals and shrines devoted to their gods. Unlike Kanto, there's much more respect for the environment and there's very few Johtoan cities that are considered modern. In fact, Johto only expands their cities if absolutely necessary. Besides the culture, the biggest drawing points to Johto are the festivals that surround the Burned Tower/The Legend of Ho-Oh and the legendary dogs as well as how Johto is the heartland for Dragons aka the Dragon's Den. Yup, Dragon Tamers and Dragon Pokemon alike originated in Johto! The Legend of the Red Gyarados originated in Johto as well. The timelines are insanely weird in regards to whether the Red Gyarados still lives in the Lake of Rage or if the regional Champion caught it, but it's still a great fact. If I was more into historic cultures I'd be completely on board with living in Johto but other regions interest me more. Plus I'd be more concerned with the sheer amount of legendary Pokemon running around the region and that three of them have beef with one another. Yes, I'm looking at you Zapdos, Moltres & Articuno.
3. Unova
Unova is an America based Pokemon region. Unova takes inspiration from numerous American cities/areas such as New York, Hawaii, Hollywood, Chicago & San Francisco therefore it isn't based on one particular area and is home to so many vastly different landmarks & attractions. The region, unlike most others, can support all four seasons although winters can get a bit extreme with intense snowfalls that are known to bury entire cities. It doesnt help that Unova is home to three weather tricksters: Landorus, Thundurus & Landorus. Although they rarely strike, their presence is accompanied by viscious winds, Thunderstorms or sandstorms. The region is also VERY isolated from the rest of the world and is only populated with strictly Unovan Pokemon, therefore don't expect to see a Pikachu here. There's so many grand cities and attractions in Unova such as Nimbasa city, home to sports stadiums, subway system their iconic ferriswheel, street performers, a theater & their gym leader Elesa is a supermodel with her own clothing line. Castelia city is known for being a large city and home to their famous art museum. Nacrene City houses one of the largest museums in the Pokemon universe too. Their Pokemon League is also an entire castle and a must see for anyone visiting the region. The only real downside, to me atleast, regarding the Unova region are the extreme winters and the isolation. Then again, maybe isolation is the best in this case scenario.
2. Galar
I had an insanely hard time picking which region to place at 2nd place because I'd 100% choose to live here in Galar!!! Galar is a Pokemon region based on Scotland and the United Kingdom. A two for one deal lol. Much like the Orre region, Galar is known worldwide for their love of competitive battling, so much so, The Gym Challenge is considered a regional sport that thousands of people eagerly attend, and that's only for one match!!! Each round of the Gym Challenge is bigger than the last with an even bigger following too. Galar is such a captial for Pro Battling that it's home to the strongest trainers on the planet and hosts the Master's Eight Tournament. Getting off the topic of battling, Galar has many of sights to host such as the Gigantamax Tree, Rose Stadium, Mustard Dojo and the Hammerlocke Castle. Not to forget the countless ruins you can encounter across the region. Climate wise, Galar can host all four seasons and the environment is very easy to traverse. Whether you live in the city or the country, Galar is a very beautiful yet peaceful region I'd love to live in.
1. Alola
Universally the one region most fans agree would be the best region to live in, Alola is a very tropical region based on Hawaii. Alola, much like Hawaii, is made up of a series of five islands and each one has its own island deity and culture of their own. Unlike most of the other regions, Alola can only support a tropical climate and therefore you won't find snow or fall leaves unless you climb the mountainous volcano. Wrestling and Surfing are region wide sports here and, of course, taken seriously. Alola regularly hosts festivals, each island celebrates differently, to respect the island deities and show appreciation towards friends and family. Everyone in Alola has such great respect towards everyone around them and the environment you can't help but feel like family everywhere you go. While picking just one island to reside within would be a hard choice, Alola is such a beautiful region both culturally and environmentally.
Which Pokemon region would you live within?
