Best Pokemon Introductions
Sometimes, Pokemon get their own special side quests, cutscenes, YouTube Videos or even an ENTIRE movie in dedication to introducing a new Pokemon to the game series. Here are 10 of the best Pokemon introductions. Yes, most of the introductions are from 2010/Gen 5 & Onwards as Pokemon wasn't exactly going all out on Pokemon introductions until the Internet became more widely used & available.
1. Wishiwashi-Pokemon Sun & Moon
Hands down one of the best Pokemon introductions across the entire series revolves around a wimpy looking fish. Or is it? In the 2016 title: Pokemon Sun & Moon, Wishiwashi is introduced to the player as the Totem Pokemon of the Water Trial. Trial Captain Lana enlists the help of the player, tasking them to go fishing and battle specific Pokemon in a given area. With each victory, the Wishiwashi progressively move downstream. At the river's bed, you're tasked with fishing one last time as Lana claims the Totem Pokemon is the last obstacle. Cue a cinematic cutscene, the player and Lana head out on a boat in the middle of the lake where they're then ambushed by a monstrously large fish that turns out to he a school of Wishiwashi showing their strength in numbers!!! Schooling form Wishiwashi then went onto become nightmare fuel as it was later a Boss fight in the dark depths in the game New Pokemon Snap. When Ultra Sun & Moon came out, and the Wishiwashi cinematic/boss fight was removed, let me tell you I rioted!!!
2. Mimikyu-Pokemon Sun & Moon
Addressed earlier within this book already, There's a reason why Mimikyu is a fan favorite! In the 2016 title of games, Pokemon Sun & Moon, the player must take on the Ghost Trial. Trial Captain, Acerola, tasks the player to brave themselves as they venture into an abandoned Haunted supermarket with nothing to protect themselves by. The player must utilize their 3DS' Motion camera to take pictures of and locate the Totem Pokemon within the supermarket leading to interesting interactions with ghost Pokemon such as Haunter and Misdreavus. The weird Part about this supermarket is that there's a Pikachu running around, and curiosity killed the cat they say! The player, of course, follows after this Pikachu and it leads them to an enclosed space where they finally meet face to face. Upon pulling out the camera however, you realize this Pikachu isn't actually a Pikachu as the camera shows this Pikachu's true identity as a twisted beaten up ragdoll made to look like a Pikachu. Surely enough, the player finally sees the Pikachu For who they are as a cinematic shows the Pikachu shifting into the ragdoll Mimikyu we all know and love before it attacks!!! What a way to introduce Mimikyu to us!!! Sun & Moon really popped off when it came to introductions.
3. Deoxys-Pokemon Destiny Deoxys
Our first Movie introduction to make the list, in 2004 Pokemon released the Gen 3 film: Pokemon Destiny Deoxys. This film took place in an industrial metropolitan city where a shapeshifting 'alien' from outer space takes over the town's electronics and begins taking everyone and everything captive! The 'alien' turned out to be named Deoxys, a organism that came to earth from a fallen meteorite. Deoxys wasn't in the game series prior to this film and it SHOOK the fanbase at the time of release as this film AND Deoxys was unlike anything Pokemon had ever done before. When was the last time Pokemon introduced a Pokemon like a horror movie villain?
4. Bonsly-Pokemon XD Gale Of Darkness
What A LOT of People don't realize is that Pokemon XD Gale Of Darkness actually introduced two Gen 4 Pokemon before said Generation. Pokemon XD introduced Munchlax & Bonsly to us in 2005, an entire year before the release of Pokemon Diamond & Pearl in 2006. Bonsly in particular got an entire side quest in Gale Of Darkness and it was quite the surprise being introduced to a brand new never before seen Pokemon. The side quest was given to the player character: Nate, when a little girl enlists his help finding her lost Bonsly of whom was abducted when the S. S. Libra was stolen by Shadow Lugia in the opening scene of the game. The Ship had been dropped in the middle of the desert region and Nate enters it where, of course, he's introduced to the Bonsly in question sleeping in the middle of the ship before it runs away and Nate must chase after it leading to Nate having to solve puzzles and navigate the Labyrinth of a ship. Eventually, Nate scares Bonsly enough that it runs home and you're later awarded your very own Bonsly to use in game. I thought this was such a fun way to introduce a new Pokemon to the games.
5. Greavard-Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Introduced through a promotional video on Pokemon's YouTube page to promote 2022's Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, Greavard recieved an entire video as an introduction and it took the fanbase by storm. Through the eyes of an Uva Academy student on a field assignment, she comes across Greavard in the dead of night. She openly admits and tells the Greavard that it's so playfully and cute, even gives the excited dog scratches and plays fetch with it. Wasn't before long when the student unfortunately passes out and the video ends. That same day, Pokemon posted a profile of Greavard on their official website explaining how Greavard is a deceased dog Pokemon that came to be when it died out in the wild and it never had a human to love so it was reincarnated and given a second chance at love. With this second chance, it's Violet Pokedex entry details how if you meet a Greavard, you have to ignore it or else it'll never leave your side. Sadly, this dog thrives on the life force of people and Pokemon thus explaining why the girl passed out at the end of the video. Immediately come this promotional video, the fanbase went crazy for Greavard and it became and instant fan favorite. THAT is how you introduce a new Pokemon!
6. Mewtwo-Pokemon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back
Mewtwo, a fanfavorite AND he was introduced in the very first Pokemon Movie, an iconic movie at that. Yes, I consider this movie to be iconic as people who are AND aren't fans of Pokemon can instantly recognize and even quote this movie. Mewtwo Strikes Back focuses entirely in on the creation of Mewtwo and how Mewtwo views the world. Considering this was Pokemon's first movie, it's a masterpiece and it introduced and characterized Mewtwo so perfectly that Pokemon hasn't been able to do it again and perfectly cemented Mewtwo rightfully as a fan favorite. In fact, I think only one other movie Pokemon remotely rivals Mewtwo and that is...
7. Lucario-Pokemon: Lucario & The Mystery of Mew
Another Pokemon and film that's considered perfect in the fanbase's eyes, Lucario & The Mystery of Mew was a Gen 3 film that was released in 2005. Not only did this movie introduce multiple Gen 4 Pokemon including Lucario & Weavile, but it's straight up a fun movie that gave us the Lore behind Lucario in a skillful fashion. Lucario & The Mystery of Mew takes us on yet another adventure with Ash and Friends as Ash won a tournament and was crowned the king of the festival. The kingdom's savior, the late Sir Aaron, is respected and cherished. Ash was given Sir Aaron's staff as so he had the honors of kicking off the festival's ball before Aaron's staff began to react strongly to Ash before a Lucario was released from the staffs crystal. Lucario had mistaken Ash for his previous trainer before getting overwhelmed and runs away. We are then introduced to Aura and how Lucarios can utilize Aura to judge the character and willpower in people. The rest of the film features Ash helping Lucario unravel his hazy past and why Sir Aaron betrayed him. This was the film that made the fanbase view Lucario as a whole as a human and set up multiple characters both in the games and the anime to be importing going forward. Us as the fanbase rightfully love Lucario and this film was a big contributor to such.
8. Kleavor-Pokemon Legends Arceus
Everything about Kleavor's introduction was loved and perfect. From Pokemon Legends Arceus being one of the most hyped Pokemon games in existence to how it was a major curveball that Scyther was receiving a new evolution, us as the fanbase were more than excited. In the promotional material for Legends Arceus, we were introduced to Nobel Pokemon as well as the main conflict of the game: Nobels were going ramped and needed to be calmed. Thus, we were given a majestic introduction to Kleavor: our first Nobel Pokemon. Kleavor's introductory cutscene as this giant cunning beast engulfed in a golden glow telling the fanbase that he is royalty and one to be reconned with. It was this introduction both in the trailers and in the game that made every fan put Kleavor on their dream teams. I know he made mine!!!
9. Volcarona-Pokemon Black & White
There's a reason why most of the fanbase still considers Volcarona a Legendary despite not being one. In the Black & White games, Volcarona got the legendary treatment. Located within the Desert Resort, in the Post Game an area in the Desert Resort is cleared of sand to reveal a relic castle of sorts the player can brave filled to the brim with puzzles and a mighty Labyrinth. If the player is successful in conquering the Desert Resort's Labyrinth, at the end in a temple is Volcarona lying in wait for its next challenger. Cue the Legendary Pokemon battle music and a cinematic introduction, Volcarona has since been etched in all our minds as a Legendary Pokemon despite Pokemon themselves telling us that Volcarona ISNT a legendary. THATS how well Pokemon Introduced Volcarona, we believe it's a legendary!!!
10. Giratina-Pokemon Platinum
Giratina's introduction in Pokemon Diamond was lacking as Giratina was a post game blink and you'll miss it encounter. In Pokemon Platinum where Giratina was the star of the show, many considered its inclusion to be 'nightmare fuel'. As Cyrus took control of Dialga & Palkia at the Spear Pillar, a black cloud forms behind him where it grew and grew in size till it was a towering nightmare with haunting red eyes. Giratina. Giratina then stretches out its wings and violently strikes Cyrus! Thus pulling the Team Plasma leader into the Reverse Dimension with a shrillful shriek! Hands down, out of all the Box Legendaries, Giratina had the best introduction of them all.
Which introduction was your favorite? Anyone I didn't list?
