CHAPTER 5: HOWDY, NEW LAB
Edward's p.o.v
There are many things that were needed in the field of Science. Patience, precision or carefulness in some people's book and of course, precaution and logic.
Most of that went out the window as I sped down the road on my skateboard after Evelyn who was three feet ahead of me on her electric bike, Bolt.
The humid wind of Jasper, Nevada was pressing against my face as though it was the plastic wrap people use to wrap food. I body occasionally shuddered as the wheels of my skateboard traveled across the rough gravel road. I had my helmet and pads on for precaution of course, as did Evelyn.
I pressed my foot onto the gravel and gave a hard push, making me go faster. Now I was neck in neck with Evelyn. I gritted my teeth and tried to will my skateboard to go faster without passing the speed limit and landing myself in trouble.
I had to win this! The fate of my allowance is on the line here! If I lose, I can say goodbye to a good chunk of my wallet. We were only 5 minutes away from the barn now and out in the open, away from the road and away from the rules.
My sister twisted her bike's throttle making it burst forward with a new boost of power. I gave myself a boost as well.
My sister hit the brakes and stopped a meter or so away from the barn door. I jumped off my board and stepped onto the tail causing it to go up. I caught the nose and stood there taking in what would my new lab for the next few years as I held my board vertically beside me.
"Well, howdy." Evelyn said trying mimic a countryside farmer accent. Emphasis on the 'try'.
The barn was definitely old. Some the paint had peeled off a bit revealing the wood and brick underneath, the door hung on its hinges ajar, some of the windows were broken and ivy grew up a section of the barn wall. Despite all that, the barn had a type of beauty to it that made it intriguing in a way.
"So, I take that it was a tie?" Evelyn asked as she took her helmet off.
"Yes." I replied instantly. Tie or not, I am not giving up at least 50% of my allowance to satisfy her hunger. As much as I love Eve, I've got limits.
I pushed the door aside and the two of us stepped inside. The smell of old wood and hay filled the air. Specks of dust flew around the air and the light reflected off them as though they were glitter. The floor was covered with patches of decaying hay and a beam or two looked like it was goanna collapse anytime soon. I noticed a pile of wooden crates on one side of the wall and saw a rusty pitchfork and an equally rusty shovel beside it.
Other than that, the place was perfect. The roof was high and it was spacey. The windows allowed wind to come in making it naturally airy. The wood was definitely old but it seemed sturdy other than the two beams. I was already envisioning it. I could hang up my sketches there, leave the 3D printer over there by the wall, a few tables and chair and if possible some padding an-
"Hello? Earth to Edward, do you copy?" Evelyn asked as she waved a hand in front of my face. Huh, I must've spaced out. "So, what's the verdict? Is it good enough?" she asked.
I walked over and knocked my fist on various spots and listened closely. But it was firm and sturdy. I stepped away from the last spot.
I looked at her and shook my head. "It isn't good," she looked disappointed and shock. Then I grinned. "It's perfect." I told her.
((Small Timeskip brought to you by chibi Evelyn and Aunt Selina bringing even more boxes and packages over))

Edward set the last box down and dusted his hands off. He looked around at the still empty space. Empty for now that is. He stuck a Pocky in his mouth and slammed his fist into his palm.
"Let's get to work." He said as he took a box cutter out of his toolkit and began to open one of the boxes.
6 hours later.....
Edward set the box down and slumped down. He lay on his back on the barn floor. His muscles ached from all the strain of his actions. He was covered in dust and soot and grease. Sweat dripped down his brow but he didn't care. Hell, he didn't mind. He was proud of himself.
He managed to make himself sit up and survey his half-finished lab. He had managed to set up some of his machines like the 3D printer and his analysis equipment. When you have a father that owns a huge inventions company, you learn that they sometimes don't mind 'borrowing' some of their equipment.
His father was always busy and all with his job but it definitely came with its perks.
Edward fished his phone out and his eyes widened at the time. He stood up suddenly and hissed slightly at the way his sore leg muscles screamed in protest. It was already 7:30 p.m.?! Did time pass by that fast?!
He also saw at least two dozen unread messages and 5 miscalls. He groaned. Great. He immediately texted Aunt Selina and told her that he'll be home soon. He pressed 'Send' and slumped down on a proper chair. He shouldn't have asked them to go home ahead of him.
'Oh well, might as well suck it up.' He told himself philosophically. He was just about to grab his skateboard when his eyes fell onto a familiar robot-like logo he had become acquainted with today.
He took the piece of metal up and stared at it. He turned it around and saw how smooth it was and how it seemed to naturally bend a bit. Was it some kinda armor?
He walked over to a machine that looked like those analyzing machine in science fiction, except it was for real. Something his father made that could scan an item and determine what element it was made down to the very molecule. It can also determine its weight, where it's from and many more.
One of Edward's favourite equipment.
He put it under the scanner and turned it on. A green ray swept over the piece of metal. Edward propped his elbow on the desk and leaned his face on his palm. There was a small 'ping' as the scan finished and the results came up on the screen.
He looked at the results and read it over in his mind. After he was done, he blinked and read it one more time. What in the name of Douglas Adams is this?
Edward's p.o.v
I rubbed my eyes, thinking the fatigue had gotten to me and made me hallucinate. But I wasn't. I typed some buttons and reran the scan three more times, I even restarted the machine all together and got the same results.
19% titanium, 5% nickel, 6% steel, 70% unknown element
And unknown element?! What in the name of Douglas Adams does that mean?! Hey I've used this machine thousands of times and it has every single element in the world uploaded into it. From copper to titanium to neodymium to scandium, you name it! What could this 'unknown element' be?
I sat back and mulled it over. Then I got an idea. After rummaging around a box I found what I was looking for, a magnet.
I placed it on the metal and it stuck. I took it out and shook it around...it still held onto the metal. So it was magnetic too, definitely a type of metal. But what metal? Is the magnet only sticking to it because of the amount of other metal related elements or is the unknown element itself made of metal too? What is this unknown element? Where did it come from? How was it made? Was the machine just malfunctioning? So many questions with no answers.
I sighed and ran a hand over my face smearing some of the soot. It's been a long day and I'm tired. My stomach growled and I stuck a Pocky into my mouth, only to realize that it was my last one. I groaned. Great, fantastic, I was tired and hungry.
The worst combination.
I got up and grabbed my skateboard and other stuff before putting on my helmet and exiting the barn. I made a mental note to fix the door. I was worried that someone might try to break in and steal my equipment so I barricaded the door with the crates I found inside it and some of the boxes.
Satisfied, I got on my skateboard and went off. As I rode back home, my mind couldn't help but wonder, what was this 'unknown element'?
Looks like I'll have something interesting to keep me occupied on weekends in the following months.

Unbeknownst to the brother, his sister will soon have something interesting to keep her occupied as well, or rather, something alien.
