Evelyn's p.o.v
*Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep......* I groaned and slammed my fist onto my annoying alarm clock. I opened my eyes groggily and immediately regretted it and groaned.
Blimey, my head hurt, it felt like someone was pounding on my skull with a sledgehammer. My legs ached and felt sore, it's as though I did gymnastics and Taekwondo for 12 hours straight without stretching.
I just had the craziest dream. I was talking to Miko at an abandoned warehouse when we were suddenly attacked by giant robots and got saved by-hold on.
I suddenly sat up with a jolt, my headache and sore legs forgotten. I looked down and surely enough I was still dressed in last night's clothes rather than my usual night attire.
My cat beanie was lopsided on my head and my phone, torchlight and taser were still in my pockets. The slingshot and ammo lay beside my hip; they most likely fell out of my pocket when I slept.
I immediately fished my phone out and turned it on. I looked at my pictures and my eyes widened and my breath caught in my throat.
Right there on my screen in black and white, er colored pixels I mean were the pictures I took of the robot brawl. I looked through them and saw it all, the white robot that saved me, Smokescreen, the bulky robot, Bulkhead and the 'cons' as they called them.
I pumped my fist. "Yes!" I said. It wasn't a dream after all.
I slumped back against my bedpost and thought it over. Now what?
Would Miko fill me in? Would she finally tell me everything? Was this a good thing? Were those robots really the good guys here? Would Miko ask me to just forget about this and never talk about this ever again?
Well one thing was for certain, there is no bloody way I was going to do the last one.
I got up from bed and went to wash up. I didn't bother to tie the red sweatshirt around my waist and simply wore my usual clothes.
I grabbed my bag and went downstairs. My brother and aunt were already there eating breakfast. My determination to get answers overpowered my hunger so I just went to the fridge and grabbed a few granola bars and a juice box. "Morning guys, bye." I said waving to Ed and Aunt Selina.
I went into the garage and paused as I closed the door. What happened to Bolt? The last thing I recall from last night was falling asleep inside the car.
I turned around and gasped in surprise when I saw Bolt right there in the garage. I walked over and touched it. I felt the cool metal under my hand and knew for sure that it wasn't a hologram. But how?
I also noticed that Bolt's paint was now a bit scratched and it had half a dozen dents in the metal frame. But overall, I could still ride Bolt. Even my helmet was in one piece and hanging from one of the handlebars. Albeit, it was a bit scratched and cracked too.
There was a note inside the helmet. I picked it up and read it. It said:
Hey cuz,
I know you're confused and scared and excited and want answers, I promise I'll fill you in after school later. Oh, and Bulkhead, the green robot, found your bike scattered somewhere outside the warehouse yesterday and we dropped it here for you. We didn't mess with it, don't worry. Hope to see you later at school.
-Miko
Looks like I owe Miko and Bulk, or rather Bulkhead one. It didn't matter. I put my helmet on and got onto Bolt.
Taking a deep breath, I mentally prepared myself for the day ahead and rode off to school.
A couple of minutes later, I arrived and parked my bike. I was early so I sat down on the steps outside of school and ate my granola bars and sipped on my juice box while I waited for Miko.
I finished my small breakfast and sat there and continued to wait. The morning was still a bit chilly too and I shuddered as a gust of wind blew. I zipped my sleeveless jacket up all the way for some extra warmth.
Soon I saw an all too familiar dark green SUV pull up beside the road to school and out came Miko. I also saw Raf come out of the same yellow and black Urbana behind it. There was also Jack sitting atop his dark blue and pink motorcycle.
Miko, Raf and Jack saw me and they walked over to me awkwardly. I looked at the two boys and saw them fidget a bit.
"I take it you boys are pretty much familiar with all this." I said. "Let me guess, those aren't just vehicles, are they." It was more of a statement than a question.
"Yeah, it's......complicated." Jack said rubbing the back of his neck.
"Jack, last night Miko and I nearly got killed by giant alien robots and we got saved by other giant alien robots, he!l, I even talked to one. Trust me, I can handle this." I said. "And don't bother trying to lie to me or say that it was special effects or some crazy dream, I remember everything crystal clear and know that what happened last night was real.
"Now, are you guys going to tell what those things are, why they're here and what's going on?" I asked and crossed my arms over my chest.
"I know, Eve. Look, hold on a sec." Miko said and whipped her phone out. "Hello? Hey, it's me. She knows and she still remembers. What are we goanna do?..........Really? You're positive.......ok." she closed her phone.
"Looks like you're coming with us after school." Miko said.
((Small Timeskip brought to you by chibi Miko on the phone))
Remember how I mentioned that time sometimes passes by so slow seconds become minutes and minutes become hours? Well now was one of those times.
I hated it. I kept glancing at the clock and saw that hand barely move an inch. If I didn't know better, I'd say that the teachers probably sabotage it and set it to move at a bloody slow pace so they can torture us even longer!
What? You can't deny that it's better than my magic time wizards' theory, I mean, at least this one's more logical.
Anyways, school did not end soon enough. When I hung out with Miko, Jack and Raf, if you could even call it that, the air was filled with awkwardness. Jack would fiddle with his shirt or fork or pencil or anything and I'd see him swallow a lump in his throat every time we so much as glance at each other. Raf on the other hand looked at anything other than me while Miko for once looked at her textbook in immense fascination.
The tension was so thick you couldn't cut through it with a light saber.
Looks like these robots were a big deal and there was more to this than I thought. I managed to somehow swallow some rice down my throat before I looked at my half-finished lunch. Then I pushed it away, I wasn't exactly peckish today.
Finally after what seemed like a lifetime, the last bell rang. Miko and I grabbed our bags and both hightailed out of the class much to our teacher's exasperation but I could care less about that.
We rushed down the hallways and nearly barreled into Jack and Raf in the process. "I see you two are out early." I said.
"Yeah, c'mon, we shouldn't keep them waiting." Raf said adjusting his glasses before running off.
We all went outside and I saw Raf's black and yellow Urbana parked behind the dark green SUV I am assuming is Bulkhead and of course, Jack's motorcycle.
"Come on." Miko said and was about to pull me into the dark green SUV but I snatched my hand back.
"Hold on for a moment." I said. I ran off and folded Bolt and carried him over. "Hope you don't mind if I put this in the back."
I entered the car and saw no one in the driver's seat, then again if my guess about 'Bulk' is correct then....
"Bulk really wasn't what he said he was, was he?" I said.
"Yeah, look, Eve this is goanna get a bit weird but don't freak out and trust me, ok?" Miko said.
"Um.....hi, Evelyn." Bulk's voice said. I whipped my head around and realized that his voice seemed to come from all around me. I took my phone and showed the picture.
"I take it this is your true self?" I asked.
"Yeah, pretty much." He said. "Sorry about the lie and all, I couldn't have just shown up as a driver-less car. That's gotten me into trouble an awful lot."
"I think all of you can make it up to me with an explanation." I said crossing my arms, looks like I'm going to be doing that quite a bit today.
"All in due time, Eve. Buckle up, its goanna be one heck of a ride." Miko said.
No kidding.
As we drove I tried to calm down my racing pulse. Emphasis on the 'try'. I could feel my heart pounding against my chest and I gripped my bag strap so hard I was worried I might snap it.
"Sooooo.....I take it you're goanna take me to your secret base in the rock formation?" I said after we drove in awkward silence for a while.
His rear view window turned towards me. "Hey, how'd you know about it?!" He and Miko asked at the same time.
"Of course I know about it, how else did I get that evidence?" I said.
"Ok....." Bulkhead said awkwardly.
"Oh don't worry I didn't tell anyone." I said. "You two aren't the only ones who can keep a secret."
I looked out the window and saw Raf and Jack riding beside us. God, I can't believe that after all this time I was finally getting some answers. Soon we went off road and towards the rock wall.
Unlike last time, I didn't freak out but it didn't stop me from watching in awe as it opened.
"You probably already know about this part, huh?" Miko said.
"Yes, I do, doesn't change the fact that it's awesome though." I said.
I looked in front and I gasped as we exit the tunnel and emerged into a room filled with all kinds of high-tech gear. The computers looked advanced and leagues ahead of even the latest model, and various other equipment were nearby. It looked like something straight out of my novels!
The door opened on its own and I stepped out. As soon as Miko and I got out, my breath got taken away as I laid eyes and the two other robots in the room.
One of them was standing by the computers. He was white and red-orange in color and had a grumpy expression on. It didn't look like smiling was a hobby of his. I noticed that the white metal plating on his arms had a red heartbeat line on them. He had a slightly squarish bodybuild.
The other robot was one I was familiar with, Smokescreen. Now that he was standing in a well lit room, I could make out his features more. He seemed to be as tall as the other robot and I noted that he had a pair of.....door wings chequered red blue with white 38s on them, he was mainly white with a few blue and red accents. His chest was blue and he also had two red streaks on his head.
I also noticed that if I squinted, I could make out a weird symbol on both of them.
The sound of machinery shifting and whirring like one of Ed's inventions filled my ears from behind. I turned around and saw Jack, Raf and Miko's vehicles transform!
I watched with my jaw hanging open so wide, you could've fit a bloody melon in it and still have room for an apple.
The dark green SUV transformed into the bulky dark green robot I saw last night. He was heavily built and the first words that come to my mind when I see him is wrecking ball. He was taller than the other robots and built more sturdy and wide. He also had a metallic jaw.
Jack's motorcycle became a female robot, I could tell by the bodybuild. She was shorter than Bulkhead. She had a slender figure and dark blue metal plating covered her chest, arms and legs. Her face was a silvery gray and I noted that the blue plating on her hip looked a bit like a skirt. She also had pink accents and her arms and thighs were black but her midriff was a darker grey. She had a pair of sharp wing like attachments on her back but they didn't look like Smokescreen's.
Raf's Urbana transformed into a yellow robot that was slightly taller than the female robot but shorter than Smokescreen. It was mostly yellow with black accents but unlike the others, I saw some sort of yellow mouthguard covering his mouth. He also had a pair of wide adorable baby blue optics. He also had a pair of yellow door wings similar to Smokescreen on his back.
"Woah." Was the only thing I could say. I felt so tiny standing before them. It struck me that one wrong misstep and I could go squish. I gulped. My heart was hammering in my chest and I forced myself to calm down.
"Yeah, take your time." Miko said as she put an arm on my shoulder.
"Is this her?" a grumpy voice asked. I turned around and noticed that it came from the white and red-orange robot.
"Yup, Eve meet Ratchet, Ratchet meet Eve." Miko introduced.
"Hi, pleasure." I said with an awkward wave.
"He's the team medic and scientist. He can be grumpy and cranky and he's kinda old." Miko said.
"I'm/He's right there you know." 'Ratchet' and I said at the same time. He looked at me slightly surprised. "Well at least she has manners." He grunted.
"Don't worry, he's not that bad once you get to know him." Jack said standing beside me.
"*sigh* It's one human after the next. At this rate, this place will be filled with them." Ratchet said.
"Oh, it's just me. One more person won't kill you so just suck it up." I said. "Besides, the more the merrier, Doc. Can I call you Doc?" I asked.
"No, you can't." He said.
"Please?"
"No."
"Pretty please?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"It's annoying."
"Ok then Doc." I said. He glared at me.
"I thought I told you not to call me that." He said.
"I know I just don't care." I said. "It sounds cooler anyways."
Some of the robots snickered at that. "She doesn't seem so bad I guess." The female robot spoke and introduced herself.
"Name's Arcee, warrior and stealth." She said.
"Good to see Miko and I aren't the only girls here." I said. "Nice to meet you, Arcee."
"I guess I should give you another introduction too. My full name's Bulkhead, wrecker." Bulkhead said.
"What's a wrecker?" I asked.
"Basically guys that blow stuff up or destroy them and kick cons' butt." Miko explained.
"That sounds pretty wicked." I said.
I looked at the yellow robot that has yet to introduce himself. He released a bunch of beeps and tones much to my confusion.
"His name's Bumblebee, he's the team scout." Raf translated.
"You can understand him?" I asked in shock. This lad has a lot of talents.
"Yes, I can." He said with a hint of pride in his voice.
I wanted to ask why he couldn't talk but I didn't want to offend the yellow robot so I decided to file that as a question for the future.
"So....what are you all exactly?" I asked.
"We are sentient beings, you should address us as such." Ratchet said.
"C'mon Doc, cut her some slack. Oh, the name's Smokescreen though you already knew that. Nice to see you...again." Smokescreen said.
"Good to see you again too. By the way, thanks for the ride last night." I said.
"No prob." He said.
"So, I take it these are all the members of your 'Sci-Fi Club'?" I asked the others.
"Not exactly all of them." Jack said.
Then I heard loud footsteps approaching and the ground shook a bit. A big and I mean really big robot entered the room and my breath hitched.
Bloody heck he was enormous! He made the other robots in here look short in comparison. He had red and blue metal plating on him and a blue helmet with matching antennas on them. The antennas had sphere shaped bases. The helmet was heavily detailed with multiple plates and layers of pieces on top of each other. He also had what looked like truck windshields on his chest and I saw four wheels on the back of his legs. His blue eyes seemed to bore straight through me.
I immediately knew that he was the leader. He seemed to naturally carry an air of authority, his gaze was stern and no-nonsense yet at the same time honest and kind, he also seemed to have a quiet confidence within him. He reminded me of one of those noble hero leaders from my novels.
He kneeled down to more or less make himself eye-level to me, which was impossible seeing as to how he was a literal giant, and spoke in a deep baritone voice.
"Here comes the speech." Miko whispered to me.
"My name is Optimus Prime. I am sorry for frightening you and apologize if you deemed us hostile. I assure you, we mean you and your friends no harm. We have been taking utmost care of your friends and they have always been out top priority. Rest assured, you may trust us." He said.
Surprisingly, I wasn't that intimidated by his voice. If anything his voice sounded honest and sincere. He also didn't outright say that I had to trust him but rather he assured that I could if I wanted to.
I swallowed and replied. "I-it's an honor to meet you, sir." I found it right to call him sir.
"Optimus, you may call me Optimus. There is no need for you to call me sir." He said. I could've sworn I saw a hint of amusement in his eyes.
"Okay then, Optimus." I tried the name and found myself liking it. "Pardon me if I'm being rude but what exactly are you all?"
"We are autonomous organic organisms from the planet Cybertron, you may call us Autobots for short." He said.
"Why are you here?" I asked. "And what are you even doing here on Earth if you already have a home?"
"We had a home." Ratchet said bitterly but I heard his voice crack with emotion.
Wait, he said had.
"We are here to protect your planet from the Decepticons." Optimus said.
"Wait, the Decepticons, they're the buggers who tried to kill Miko and I last night, right?" I asked piecing it together.
Optimus nodded. "And why are they here? And if you don't mind me asking, what happened to your home?" I asked.
"One of the many reasons they are here is because our home planet has become uninhabitable, ravaged by centuries of civil war." He said.
I felt a pang of sympathy for him, for all of them. So that's what the Doc meant by 'had' a home. To lose something so precious to war......war truly is the worst nightmare for anything anywhere.
I'm no history geek but even I know that in all the wars our worlds been through, even after all the bloodshed and sacrifices, some people still had a home to go home to. Now, these robots were fighting a war and they didn't even have a home at all.
"Why were you guys even fighting a war to begin with? For power?" I asked.
"First and foremost, it was over the control for the supply of energon. The very fuel and lifeblood of all Cybertronians." He said.
And so I spent the next hour learning everything, their races, their factions, their history, their battles, their missions, and their terms they use which was pretty handy.
Apparently they use curse words like 'scrap' and 'frag'. I think those words will come in handy when I have to curse. I also learned the terms they use for body parts.
Head- Helm
Arm- Servo
Foot- Pede
Eyes- Optics
Fingers- Digits
The list goes on so I'll stop here.
"So let me get this straight, you guys are called Autobots, the good guys and the bad guys are called Decepticons and they're led by a con named Megatron. Right now, you guys are not only looking for energon but you're also trying to find relics that could pull of impossible miracles or cause mass destruction. You're also trying to find these...Omega keys because you believe they have the power to save your home planet, Cybertron. Did I get that all right?" I asked.
"Yes, however there is also another threat at large." Optimus said.
"Who or rather, what?" I asked.
"MECH." Jack spat as though it was a filthy disease.
"MECH?" I asked.
"They're terrorists, they plan on taking over the world with cutting edge technology." Miko explained.
"In this case, Cybertronian technology." Raf chimed in.
"Wait, they know about you guys?" I asked. Optimus nodded.
"Should you ever encounter them, retreat. They are ruthless and no better than the Decepticons. They are Decepticons in human skin and will stop at nothing to gain their goal." Optimus said gravely.
"They're savages, simple as that." Ratchet spat.
Bumblebee beeped in agreement and nodded his...helm, if I remember, vigorously in agreement.
I gulped. I didn't know that such horrible people were out there. What the he!l was wrong with them? They should know better than to try and tinker with alien technology that was literally out of this world. From what I hear, they're just a group of thugs trying to play god and that never ends well.
"So, what now?" I asked him. "I mean, what are you all going to do to me? You won't try to erase my memory, right? I mean I know how to keep a secret." I added quickly.
"Do not worry, Evelyn. I assure you, we plan to do no such thing." Phew, good to know that. "However after the encounter you had last night, I am afraid the Decepticons might know of you already." He said.
"So if I see any suspicious vehicles I give you bots a ring?" I asked. The thought of encountering another one of those cons on my own was unsettling to say the least. They give me the jitters
"It is best that you remain under our watch, you will need a guardian to protect you and help you acclimate to your new surroundings. If the Decepticons find you alone and vulnerable, I fear they will not hesitate to attack you." He said.
He looked around and his eye-er, optics fell on the flashy colored Smokescreen. "Smokescreen, you will watch over Evelyn." He said.
"Sweet! A human partner!" Smokescreen said with a pumped fist excitedly. In all honesty, I was excited too. Admittedly among all of them I feel more comfortable with Smokescreen. Sure there was also Bulk but I think he's already taken.
"I won't let you down, Optimus." He said quietly. It seemed like he was saying that to himself more than to Optimus. Looks like the guy looks up to Optimus.
He took a step forward but was stopped by Arcee.
"Optimus, can we talk for a moment?" she asked in that talk-about-adult-stuff-privately tone similar to the type of tone my parents use when they want to talk about something not meant for Ed and I.
"Of course." Optimus said before they walked out of the room.
Huh, so even the Autobots have private adult talks, who knew?
No one's p.o.v
As soon as they were out of earshot, Arcee looked at Optimus. "Optimus, with all due respect, are you sure about this?" she asked.
"I understand your doubts Arcee but while Smokescreen lacks in experience, he makes up for it in raw talent. You and I both know that he is a capable fighter and he has a good spark. I believe having a human partner will help him better understand human customs and teach him what it is like to be responsible. It will also show him to better understand the need to protect the humans." Optimus explained patiently.
"Furthermore, he is friendly and easy to get along with. I believe he will also be able to help Evelyn acclimate to her new surroundings and allow us to gain her trust." Optimus added.
".......There really isn't any other option is there?" Arcee asked.
"I'm afraid he is the only suitable candidate left. I highly doubt Ratchet will agree to this and I have even higher doubts that they'll get along." Optimus said.
Arcee thought about it and realized the prime had a point. "Fair point. I guess it wouldn't hurt." She said eventually.
"Then it is settled." Optimus said before walking back into the room. Everyone, Autobot and human alike looked at him.
"It has been settled. Evelyn, from today onwards, Smokescreen will be your guardian." He said.
"Cool." Evelyn said. She turned around and offered Smokescreen a friendly smile who returned it.
"Um, sorry to interrupt but could you explain how you found out about the base?" Bulkhead asked.
"Oh right, well sorry about that. You see....." Evelyn then explained how she placed the tracker on Bulkhead without him noticing then followed them and how she managed to sneak into the base and find out about them via the air vents which allowed her to remain undetected.
"Looks like I'm going to have to add security measures to the vents as well." Ratchet said.
"Where is this tracker anyways?" Arcee asked.
"I'll get it off. Bulk, could you transform into your vehicle form?" Evelyn asked.
"Sure." He said and transformed into his SUV again. Evelyn crawled under him and after probing and poking around, she found the tracker and took it off.
"Here it is." She said and passed it to Raf.
"This.....looks familiar...." Raf said.
"My brother made it." Evelyn said with a hint of pride in her voice.
"Let me see that." Ratchet said. Raf placed it in his big servo. Ratchet grabbed a magnifying lense and looked at the tracker. His optic ridges raised a fraction in impress.
He'll admit that Evelyn's brother was clearly no novice. The tracker was made of a strong plastic so it wouldn't be detected by metal scanners and its structure was accurate and highly detailed. Clearly he had the tools needed to make this too.
"There you go. You are now tracker-free my friend." Evelyn said dusting her hands off. Bulkhead transformed back to his original giant robot form.
Soon the Autobots and their partners went off to do their own thing. Ratchet went back to the computers, Optimus went to the training room, Bulkhead went dune-bashing with Miko again, Arcee and Jack went riding and Raf played video games with Bumblebee leaving Smokescreen and Evelyn.
"Hi Evelyn, I'm Smokescreen though you....probably already knew that." Smokescreen said as he kneeled down in front of Evelyn. He felt a bit uncomfortable and awkward honestly. He hardly interacted with humans and didn't really know how to socialize with them.
Evelyn looked at the Autobot who was going to be her guardian for a while. He sounded a bit awkward, then again, she couldn't blame him but she admired him that he was at least trying. His tone was friendly, warm and welcoming and she liked it.
"Hi, I'd say my name but I bet you already know it anyways. Still, it's a pleasure to meet you, partner." Evelyn said with a friendly grin.
"Thanks....partner." Smokescreen said trying out the title himself and found that he didn't mind it. "So.....um, you...wanna go for a ride? Talk a bit and get to know each other?" he asked.
"Sure, let me just grab my flute." Evelyn said before going over to where her bag was put with the others. She took her flute case out and walked back to Smokescreen.
"Ready to go." She said holding the case out. Smokescreen grinned and took a step back. Evelyn watched in awe as his mechanical parts shifted and folded until standing in his place was an Indy 500 Mclaren MP4-12C racecar.
"Woah..." she breathed in awe. She walked around the car and admired it. She wasn't that much of a car enthusiast but even she could tell that his car probably packed massive horsepower, enough to put her Aunt's car to shame.
"Like the wheels?" she hears Smokescreen's voice say and he wiggled his tires for show. "Hop in." He said and the driver's door opened up on its own.
Evelyn sat inside on the comfortable leather seats, the material felt comfortable under her thighs. "You have good taste." She said.
"Thanks. Buckle up." Smokescreen said and the seat belts wrapped around her in a tight yet gentle way. "Think you can handle speed?" he asked in a playful challenging tone as the dashboard lit up.
Evelyn smirked. "Try me." She said and placed her hands on the wheel.
"Then let's roll out!" he said. Smokescreen pushed the pedal to the metal and Evelyn's head was pushed back into the headrest of her seat as they drove out of base at neck-breaking speed.
Evelyn opened her mouth and screamed in excitement. "You want me to slow down?" Smokescreen asked mistaking her scream for one of terror.
"Are you kidding me? Punch it!" Evelyn said pumping her fist. Smokescreen smirked and they went even faster.
Evelyn released a whoop of delight as they sped across the road at even greater speeds and raised her hands above her head jovially.
"I think you and I will get along just fine." Smokescreen said.
