CHAPTER 1: NICE TO SEE YOU CUZ!
"Are we there yet?" Evelyn asked.
"No." Edward replied.
Twenty seconds later. "Are we there yet?"
"No."
Thirty seconds this time. "Are we there yet?"
Edward took a deep breath. "No." He said.
Forty seconds. "Are we there yet?"
Edward gritted his teeth. This was getting annoying. He wasn't sure of she was intentionally doing so because of that. "Not since the last time you asked."
Forty seconds pass again. "Are we-" "We. Are. Not. There. Yet!" Edward said as he snapped his head around to glare at his sister from the front seat.
She put her hands up in a defensive gesture. "Ok ok, god, I think you need a chill pill more than Nana Tina." Evelyn said.
Edward counted to ten. Then twenty. Then thirty. Then forty. Then fifty......nothing. Oh thank heavens.
"How much longer till we're there?" Nevermind. At least it wasn't the same phrase.
"Another 10 minutes tops. Now can you please stop asking?" Edward said giving her a satisfactory answer for once.
"Ok." She said before turning back to her list of music on her iPod screen.
Soon the taxi parked in front of a 2 storey house that had a nice orange roof and a small vegetable garden giving it a homey yet quaint appearance. Edward paid the taxi driver and got off with Evelyn.
Edward's p.o.v
I rang the doorbell and waited. "Coming!" a voice said. The door opened to reveal a woman in her 40s with brunette hair like my sister and I but a lighter shade. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun and she had brown eyes like Evelyn and I and wore a chequered violet flannel shirt and a pair of black jeans. It was our mother's sister aka our aunt, Aunt Selina. She saw us and her face lit up. The next thing I knew was that Evelyn and I were in a bear hug.
"Edward, Evelyn it's so good to see you again! It's been too long!" she said delightedly, her British accent was gone due to all the years she's spent in America. I was surprised at the strength she had seeing as to how she was literally squeezing the life out of me and my sister. Ok, bloody hell she's strong!
"Good....to see...you..too...Aunt..." Evelyn managed to croak out.
"We can't....breathe." I gasped. Ok, now there were black spots dancing in my vision and I'm pretty sure they aren't insects.
She then released us and I breathed in the oh so sweet air. I briefly checked to see if any of my ribs were cracked. Nope, still good. Damn, she could put those American wrestlers to shame.
"Sorry about that, I got caught in the moment." Aunt Selina apologized.
"It's cool Auntie." I reassured her.
She looked at me and Evelyn and put a hand on each of our shoulders. "Look at you two, you've both grown so much since the last time I saw you." That's what she always said, even though it isn't true. We talked over Skype 3 months ago but then again, I doubt she cares.
"Come in, come in. I've already prepared your rooms. Have you eaten yet?" she asked as she ushered us in.
"Not yet." Evelyn admitted. As she said this our stomachs growled.
"Don't worry, once you've washed up and settled in a bit we can head over to a nice cafe that's not far from here for some snacks." Aunt Selina said.
"Sounds like a good plan to me." I said as I took my bags and made my way upstairs to the spare bedrooms.
"I call dibs on this one." Evelyn said before claiming the room on the right. I guess that leaves me to the one on the left. I opened the door up and entered what will be my room for the next few months.....or years or so.
It wasn't that grand or anything. It was a normal room. There was a bed on one corner and beside it was a huge desk with at least 10 drawers. That was dubbed my favourite furniture so far. It was perfect for all my projects, inventions and ideas! There was also a wardrobe that had a few hangers in it and a mini compartment below the bed where I could store things without worrying about losing them. A book shelf was on one of the walls. I noticed that Aunt Selina left a few notebooks in there. There was a sticky note above it that said 'For your notes and ideas.'
I also saw a door that led to the bathroom. I peeked in and saw that there was soap and shampoo in the showers already.
I smiled. Aunt Selina was many things and a good aunt was one of them. I threw my bags onto the bed and decided to take a quick shower before unpacking.
Evelyn's p.o.v
The first thing I did when I entered my room was dump my bags on the bed. Phew. Then I surveyed my room.
It wasn't anything fancy. The room was in a bit of an L shape. The first piece of furniture I saw was a huge bookshelf that even had drawers at the bottom. It was more than enough space for my books and others to come. There was a desk propped up against a window with a swiveling chair in front of it. The desk was also tucked in a corner. Beside the bed was a wardrobe that had a few hangers inside.
There was a beanie bag and a music stand in the empty corner with a small table beside it. There was a sticky note on the stand that said 'Thought you'd need this for your music.'
I've said this a good few times but Aunt Selina is my favourite aunt. She's cool in my book. I put my guitar and flute case in the corner and saw a door. I opened it and saw the bathroom. It was already filled with toilet paper, soap and shampoo. Talk about hospitality.
I decided to take a quick shower and change out of the sweatpants and hoodie I was wearing before doing some unpacking.
When I was done, I grabbed my flute case, before you ask I have a habit of bringing it with me when I go out most of the time, plus the flute case also has spare pockets and compartments for my other stuff, and went downstairs.
No one's p.o.v
Evelyn arrived downstairs and saw that her brother and aunt were already there. Aunt Selina was now dressed in a gray blazer over a white and pink striped t-shirt and a pair of blue pants with a pair of pink sandals.
"Ready to go?" Aunt Selina asked as she held up a ring of keys.
"Ready." Evelyn said as she straightened the collar of her jacket.
"Can I drive?" Edward asked. He'd gotten his driving license not long ago and wouldn't mind putting it to good use.
"Nope." Aunt Selina said popping the 'p'. "Oh, I hope you two won't mind some extra company. I invited some old friends over." Edward and Evelyn shrugged. They didn't mind, as long as they weren't jerks or bullies.
They piled into their aunt's Chrysler car and made their way to the cafe.
((Small Timeskip by chibi Aunt Selina driving))
Evelyn leaned her face against her palm as she saw the buildings whiz pass her. She briefly saw a music shop and a pizza shop which caught her interest but other than that, it was a normal peaceful town.
'So much for 'the entertainment capital of the world'.' Evelyn thought. She knew that the brochure was probably exaggerating and all but she was still hoping for more.
Edward was no different. 'I was hoping that it would at least have something to make it stand out a bit.' He thought. Soon they stopped in front of a quaint cafe. A sign with a cat-like cupcake showed that it was also a cat cafe.
"Here we are kids." Aunt Selina said as she parked her car. "You'll love it here. The pastries are to die for! And don't get me started on the s'mores."
"What's this place called?" Edward asked. "Meow Pow Pastries." Aunt Selina said. "I like this place already." Evelyn said as she walked towards the cafe. Edward wasn't surprised, his sister loved cats and sweets. A cat cafe was heaven to her.
The bell on the door jingled as she entered. Instead of the usual 'Welcome to (whatever name it has)' Evelyn was greeted by meows. She immediately fell in love with the place.
The smell of glazed doughnuts and hot chocolate and other pastry goodness was in the air. There were also all kinds of cats everywhere. Maine coons, Persians, Siamese, Shorthairs and other adorable kitties. Some were kittens while some were already pretty big and old. She spotted a few curled by the feet of customers, some playing with them, some were running around and chasing each other while some were simply lazing around without giving a damn to the world.
She knelt down and stroked the soft fur of a nearby Maine coon. "Aren't you the softie." Evelyn cooed as she stroked its ears causing the cat to purr in delight.
"Excuse me, but don't you think you could not block the entrance?" Edward asked. Evelyn picked the cat up and moved out of the way. She looked at the white Maine coon she was currently holding who simply stared back at her.
"From this day forth, you will be Marshmallow." Evelyn told the cat who simply meowed in response.
"What's the point? Won't you just lose track of it?" Edward asked as he stroked a British shorthair that was lying on a nearby table.
"You never know." Evelyn replied before she put the cat back on the floor and watched it walk off.
"Kids, come say hi to your old friends." Aunt Selina said beckoning them over to a table.
'Old friends?' Evelyn and Edward wondered who. They don't recall having any friends here in Jasper, Nevada.
Then Evelyn heard a voice she hadn't heard in months. "Eve?"
She turned around and saw a girl with brown eyes like hers with fair skin and long black hair with pink highlights looking at her. She was wearing a dark blue tank top with yellow accents and a green robot picture over a purple t-shirt with jean shorts, purple striped stockings and knee high boots.
Evelyn's eyes widened in delight as did the other girl's. The two of them ran towards each other and embraced one another. "Oh my god, Miko it's been so long!" Evelyn said as she hugged Miko.
"You can say that again, wow have you grown? Are you still playing the guitar and flute? Is your brother goanna go to college? How are Auntie and Uncle?" Miko asked firing off questions rapidly. Evelyn wasn't fazed at all and answered all of her questions.
"Yes, I have grown a bit. I still play the guitar and flute, Ed's goanna go to college here and mother and father are well." She told her.
"Wait, you can keep up with what she just said?" Evelyn turned around and saw two other boys sitting at the same table as Aunt Selina.
One of them was obviously the youngest. He had spiky brown hair and wore a pair of red framed glasses. Evelyn didn't want to sound rude but his outfit kinda screamed nerdy with the orange vest and collared shirt. But he seemed nice.
The other who asked the question was evidently older. He had black hair and wore a dark gray t-shirt over a light gray long sleeved one and a pair of jeans. All things considered, he looked like your average teenager.
"Yup." Evelyn replied. "I assume these are your friends? The ones you keep telling me about?" Evelyn asked Miko. Miko nodded.
"Yup, meet my buds, Raf *points at Raf* and Jack *points at Jack*." The two boys waved at her and her brother.
"Nice to meet you." Jack said.
"Pleasures mine. The name's Evelyn Lila Nakadai, but you can just call me Evelyn or Eve for short." She greeted.
"Wait, Nakadai? You're related to her?!" Jack asked as he gestured to Miko.
"Yes, we're cousins." Evelyn said. "Also this is my brother Edward." She pointed to Edward who stuck his hand out.
"Nice to meet you." He said politely. Raf shook his hand but Jack was still looking at the two girls.
"Something interesting about the girls?" Edward asked Jack though Jack noticed there was a protective edge to his voice.
"Sorry, didn't mean to stare. It's just that well....I thought she was joking but I can see the similarities between them." Jack said as he put his hands up in a defensive gesture.
It was true. The two of them were so alike that they could be mistaken for sisters. Evelyn had brown eyes like Miko that held the same twinkle of adventure and mischief in them. She also had fair skin and a slender bodybuild except hers looked like it was more athletic. The two girls were even the same height!
They were also very different of course. Miko had black hair with pink highlights and tied it up in a low ponytail and pigtails but Evelyn had brunette hair with sky blue highlights and kept hers tied in a messy low ponytail.
She wore a sleeveless turquoise jacket with an upturned collar that was zipped up halfway to reveal the white t-shirt she wore underneath. She also wore ripped denim shorts over pink and dark blue striped stockings and a pair of shin high lace up boots. A red sweatshirt was tied around her slender waist and on her left hand she wore pink, turquoise, sky blue and red bracelets while on her right hand she wore a pink and dark blue striped fingerless glove.
"Oh, sorry bout' that mate, didn't mean to be rude." Edward apologized.
"It's cool, Edward." Jack said. Jack also noticed the similarities Edward had with his sister.
He had the same tousled brunette hair except his had golden highlights in it. He also had the same brown eyes as her. He was tall, maybe half a head taller than Jack and had a fit and athletic body. He wore an unbuttoned red chequered flannel shirt with rolled up sleeves- revealing his well-toned arms, over a white t-shirt and a pair of gray cargo pants with orange high-tops and a pair of orange and black fingerless gloves.
"I invited Miko over when I heard you were coming back." Aunt Selina explained. "Thought it might help you kids feel more welcomed."
"Hope you all don't mind my friends, I thought they'd tag along so I can introduce them in one shot." Miko said.
"It's alright." Evelyn replied.
"So, you guys close?" Raf asked the two girls who were sitting next to each other and each stroking a cat respectively.
They nodded. "We're cousins but in all honesty Miko is like a sister to me." Evelyn said. The two girls then told them about all the things they did since they were kids and how close they were.
As Jack learned more and more about the girls and how similar they were, he sensed a storm brewing. The fact that she was staying here for a couple years made it worse. He leaned back sighed dramatically. "The world is ending." He bemoaned. He did not need another Miko in his life, one was already enough of a handful.
Edward was in a similar position. "It's been an honor knowing you lads." He said with a mock salute. Aunt Selina and Raf laughed at their acting while Evelyn and Miko squawked in indignation.
But the girls couldn't keep the grins off their faces knowing that they were joking.
They ordered their drinks and pastries and ate in comfortable silence. Evelyn, Edward and Raf ordered hot chocolate while the others ordered lattes except Miko who preferred a smoothie. Evelyn smiled from ear to ear as she dug into a delicious chocolate lava cake. She watched the chocolate ooze out of it in a satisfying way. Jack, Edward and Aunt Selina decided to have doughnuts while Raf ate a cookie. Miko was munching on a glazed cruller.
Edward wiped his fingers on a napkin and took his laptop out. "No devices on the table." Aunt Selina scolded. "I'm already full." Edward said waving her off before focusing on the laptop. Jack craned his head and saw row after row of numbers and words and codes with pictures and schematics beside it.
Despite the technical engineering he's learned while spending time with the Autobots, he was no tech expert like Raf or Ratchet so it was Greek to him. The only thing he more or less understood was the picture and schematics that seemed to belong to some kinda chip or something.
"What's that? A tracking device?" Raf asked nodding towards the laptop. Edward briefly looked up from his work and looked at the young boy slightly surprised that he knew what he was doing.
"Yes. How'd you know?" Edward asked.
"The codes and schematics make it pretty obvious." Raf said in a matter of fact tone.
Soon the two of them were chatting away about coding and programming while occasionally giving each other tips and pointers. To the others it was as though they were speaking another language.
"Wow, talk about nerd talk." Jack said. "No offence." He added quickly.
Evelyn and Miko groaned. "My head hurts." Miko said.
"Is it brain freeze from the smoothie or the nerd talk?" Evelyn asked.
"Both. Nerd talk is a language I can never understand." Miko said. Jack patted her back.
"It takes a nerd to understand another nerd." Jack said.
"I'm not a nerd. I'm just smart." Edward huffed as he crossed his arms and looked away haughtily. Then he smiled to let them know he wasn't bragging.
"These programming and schematics are really cool." Raf told Edward. Raf liked him despite only knowing him for a while. He was nice and easy to get along with, plus he understood him like with Bumblebee.
"Thanks." Edward replied. He was silent for a moment as he looked at the young boy. He had to admit that the lad was certainly smarter than others his age and he definitely had skill and experience. He also seemed like a good kid. He wasn't exactly a group person most of the time since he preferred to work alone but he wasn't against pairs and he could use an assistant sometimes.....
"Raf, are you free on weekends?" Edward asked.
"Sometimes, why?" Raf asked.
"I was wondering if....if you would like to be my assistant." Edward said.
Raf frowned. "Your assistant?"
Edward nodded. "I don't do this just for fun. As much as I genuinely enjoy it, I take it seriously. I am applying to Future Minds, a college that focuses on engineering, computer programming and coding and of course, inventing and innovation. I plan on becoming an inventor and I mean it. It's considered as 'prestigious' so the expectations are high.
"It also means loads and loads of assignments and projects. I won't force you, you don't have to say yes but if you want, I would like to have an assistant, a helping hand. Someone who could help lighten the load a bit.
"I know it's much to ask since I can't exactly pay you or anything but......what do you say? Would you like to become my partner?" Edward asked.
Raf considered it for three seconds. Six seconds.....twe- "Sure." Nevermind.
Edward blinked in surprise, that was a fast decision. "Are you sure? You don't have to decide right away. And I won't hold it against you if you decline." He said.
Raf shook his head. "It's alright. It'll be nice to put my skills to use. Besides, it's not every day I get the chance to hang out with someone who understands and likes the same things as me." Raf said.
"Are you certain? No offense but you're just a kid, you sure it won't stress you out?" Edward asked one more time.
"I'm twelve." Raf said in an offended tone.
Edward was once again slightly shocked. 'He's twelve?! He looks like a ten year old!' He thought.
"Besides, it's not like I have to do it every day and I could use something to take my mind of things." Raf said.
"Ok then, glad to have you with me, partner." Edward said with a smile and extended his hand. Raf took it and they shook hands. They were interrupted by a slurping noise.
Everyone turned to see Miko and Aunt Selina slurping away at their drinks as they watched the scene in boredom.
"*Sluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrppppppppp*, you boys done with the deal?" Aunt Selina asked.
The two boys rubbed their heads sheepishly. "Sorry." They chorused.
Miko leaned back and sighed dramatically. "I think I just lost ten years of my life. It's a miracle I didn't die of boredom." She said.
"I think we should thank the gods with an offering of more pastries." Evelyn suggested.
"Which you will undoubtedly eat." Edward replied.
"On behalf of God of course." Evelyn said with a smirk.
"I don't think he's hungry." Jack said.
"And how would you know?" Miko asked. Jack pointed to a table behind them. They all turned around and saw a group of monks and priests eating pastries and sipping coffee.
"Oh." Was the only thing that came out of Miko's mouth.
Aunt Selina pointed at the group. "Now that's timing and coincidence on a whole new level." She said.
"Well...that was unexpected." Raf said.
Evelyn decided to change the subject. "So where's the other guy?" she asked Miko.
"What do you mean?" Miko asked.
"The other guy you befriended." Evelyn said.
"You mean them? They're right there you know." Miko replied gesturing to Raf and Jack.
"No, I mean the one you keep going in about, the big guy who hangs out with you and go to concerts with you. What was his name again? Bob? No, Bud maybe? Nah....ah! *snaps fingers* Bulk!" Evelyn said.
At that, Raf and Jack's face paled a bit much to Edward's confusion.
"Something wrong? You two are a bit pale all of a sudden." He asked.
"No, we're fine." Raf said as he quickly regained his composure.
"Must've......been the....pastries." Jack said lamely.
"Oh, Bulk...." Miko said. 'Scrap scrap scrap! Calm down girl, remember what you're supposed to say.' She told herself. "He's not here." She told her cousin.
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "I can see that, is he out of town or something?" Miko nodded her head in response.
"Yeah, he's kinda busy and travels around a lot. He's around Edward's age and has to deal with jobs and school work and yada yada yada." Miko said nonchalantly. 'Nice acting girl.' Miko mentally complimented herself and gave herself a pat on the back.
"Oh, I was looking forward to meeting your best bud. He sounds like a cool lad." Evelyn said, totally oblivious to the lie. "Maybe we can meet up together sometime?"
"Sure, I'll see if he has time." Miko replied. Aunt Selina looked at her watch and got up.
"Hate to break it to you kids but we have to go now." She said as she got up.
"Can't we stay for a little longer?" Evelyn whined.
"Sorry, but you and your brother still have to settle in. You have unpacking to do, lots of unpacking." Aunt Selina told her.
Miko patted her back. "Don't worry, we'll see each other in school soon." She said.
"The word 'school' already has 'no fun and is pure boredom' written on it." Evelyn said. Miko didn't argue with that.
"Life ain't all about fun and adventure; otherwise I'm pretty sure I'd have white hair by now." Edward said.
'You already do.' Evelyn thought to herself. Her brother was always working so hard with his assignments and all of his inventions and projects. He even pulls all nighters every now and then much to her and her parents chagrin.
Then again, it could be worse.
"We can hang out during lunch time too." Raf chimed in hoping to lighten the mood.
"And we can get together to go through tough assignments and face the other tortures of high school." Jack said. Evelyn smiled at their attempt.
"Thanks." She said.
"Don't mention it." "You're welcome." They replied.
"I'll see you guys soon." Evelyn said. Miko got up and gave Evelyn a hug.
"It's been nice catching up cuz." She said.
Evelyn chuckled. "Don't go all sappy, I'll be seeing you all again soon like I said." Evelyn said before she stepped away.
She waved goodbye one more time before she picked her flute case up and left.
Jack, Raf and Miko waited until they heard the bell jingle and their backs disappeared as they turned a corner before Jack turned around and gave Miko the you-are-in-trouble look.
Miko could only think of one thing. 'Oh scrap.'
