6. When You Were Gone
C H A R L O T T E E V A N S
Few months back.....
Sometimes it feels like it's end of the world. It feels like you've lost a lot and probably its all gone for good.
I felt defeated,
Helpless,
Angered.
But then life's not always unfair. It gives you a chance to change it all. It gives you a chance to turn the odds in your favour.
For me, It was the moment.
The corner of my mouth turned into a self satisfactory smirk and I tried my best to hide myself behind the walls. My eyes were fixed on a door. An open door.
It could happen any second.
I had been doing everything from the past four hours to make it happen. But suddenly I felt a lump forming in my throat.
My thoughts wandered to a metallic object that sat heavy inside the pocket of my jeans, almost burning a hole.
My hand travelled down my pocket to pull the object out. It belonged to him.
I stared at the metallic wrist watch. I knew I should be happy. It was my time to strike back. It was my time to turn the tables. It was my time to win and I was very much lucky to get it all back in a day but something in me wasn't happy.
What could've possibly gone wrong?
"Keep your emotions under your hold, Chase." I almost jumped back at the sound, my back colliding with a fine, defined rock hard chest.
"It needs to be done." I turned my head gently to look back into Zach's dark blue eyes.
The dead seriousness in his eyes didn't make me question him one more time. Burying all my questions, insecurities and second thoughts deep inside my brain, I turned away from him, of course after returning a nod. My eyes were fixed on the aim.
And suddenly it happened.
"I said fucking leave me!" I heard him yell over. He sounded beyond angry. Pained.
My heart started beating faster when I heard the sound of something, just like glass shattering on the floor. Someone suddenly turned on the lights, illuminating the way to his house along with a part of the garden attached to the front, making it easier for us to have a look at them.
"Shut the fuck up!" I heard another man scream back, his voice far more demanding. A man came out of the door of the elegant house where I've been once. He was probably the same guy who's voice we had just heard.
The sight of the person who was pushed out soon after, almost horrified me to death.
He stood there, constantly trying to pull himself away from the hold of the three guys who had their arms locked around his. Finn's pretty face was all swollen towards his left cheek. His lip probably bleeding from before.
Even under the night sky and a little light coming from his house, I was able spot the trail of blood swimming down from his foread. A redness swam in his emerland green eyes.
"I said leave me alone." he said as he attempted to kick those guys off. No matter how strong Finn was, they were easily overpowering him.
The guy who appeared to be even taller than Finn standing in front smirked, pulling out a revolver and pointing it straight at the space between Finn's eyebrows, on his forehead. His blonde hair sat messily over his head.
What the hell did I got him into?
Shame on you, Evans. What a low move!
I started panicking on my spot. I turned back to Zach to question him. "Why the hell are they torchuring him like that?" I asked, not even realising that there was a fright, a quiver in my voice. I felt drizzy.
Zack narrowed his eyes at me. "Weren't you the one who wanted this?"
And with that, I froze. I had no words.
I saw them pulling him away along with them. He fell quite.
He could freaking die! Finn Alex Walker, the guy I just accepted, I started having feelings for, could just die in front of me, only because of me.
My ego brought out the need of revenge in me. My need for revenge brought out the worst in me. The worst in me brought the worse for him.
I felt my palms sweating and a pool of liquid forming in my eyes. Stealing a look at his poorly beaten face, made my hear ache so bad.
Zach dragged me along with him, trying to hide us against the walls of the Walker's Mansion as the three men took Finn away from his home, away from me. I felt Zach gripping me tightly, covering my mouth with his palm in an attempt to shut me off.
I knew Finn couldn't match up those armed men. They were dangerous. But I knew he was quick. He was clever.
Do something Finn! I'm sorry. Do something!
With all the force I could muster, I raised my elbow and smashed it straight into Zach's chest, who jumped back, wincing in pain as I freed myself from his grip, running away from him where they just took Finn.
I wanted call out his name but I stopped.
And just when I thought he'd fight back, just when I thought he miraculously heard my unsaid thoughts, I saw him turning his head back, as if he sensing my presence.
He suddenly stopped all the attempts to run away. All his attempts to free himself came to an halt. His beautiful green eyes were I once found my escape, were blood red.
He felt betrayed,
Defeated,
Angered,
Just like I did. Though, not anymore.
All of time I spent with him came rushing back to my head as my eyes locked with his. The day I met him. The day he started changing. The way he treated me. The way he was with Kevin. How we use to spend most of our time bickering and hitting each other.
How it all started going downhill.....
A thousand expressions crossed his poorly bruised face. I opened my mouth to say something, but I choked. I choked on my own words. I couldn't say anything. Neither could he.
But his features did tell me everything.
They told me something I didn't want to hear, like ever.
They told me something that made me regret my choices.
They told me he wasn't my Finn anymore.
They told me that it was the last time I was ever going to see him.
Even if it was only you, it felt like a part of me had vanished, when you were gone....
******
I opened my eyes in a snap as I felt my entire body jerk upwards. I experienced a slight pain in my temple and realised it was due hitting my head against the window of the car I was in.
Wait, what car?
"Oops, didn't mean to wake you but it was a speed breaker plus you know the roads in this area aren't their best." I snapped my head in the direction of the person whose voice I just heard, my eyes still fluttered, unable to adjust themselves according to the light.
"Blake?" I blurted, rubbing my eyes with my palms. What on earth was I doing with him?
"Whom did you expect?" he said, wiggling his eyebrows funnily enough to make me chuckle. He fixed his brown orbs back on the road with his hands gripping the steering wheel, waiting for my reply.
"Just to let you know I don't have high expectations but atleast a handsome face right before my eyes would've been a one way trip to heaven for me." I mocked, folding my arms back to my chest and fixing my eyes on the road.
Blake stole a little glance at me. "Heaven? You sure it wouldn't have been creepy?" he asked.
"Nope." I replied. As I talked to him, all the memories of present came rushing back to me. The school was over and so was my shift at Olivia's place. I was pretty much tired and Blake offered to take me back home. I had been working there since a few days and never realised that I actually liked it there. All I had to do was, help the little kids indulge themselves into activities and help them complete their homework.
It was good till I was getting paid a good sum of money that I could save. I never believed in wasting money on unnecessary things.
Speaking of Blake, he managed to convince Olivia to let him hangout with me. He said he'd help us out and wouldn't even charge anything! He really loved volunteering.
I was too tired for my own good and I din't know when I fell asleep. I was pretty much happy until my perfect dream decided to drain all the colours of my life all together.
"Only you, Char. That could be only you." he said laughing at my previous remark. "And Oh, speaking of handsome faces don't you think you're wish kind of came true because I am pretty-"
"-Pretty ugly, I know." I said biting my lip to stop myself from laughing and placing a hand gently on his shoulders. He looked petrified. "I know Blake, you're ugly but there's no need to say that you're ugly again and again. You being ugly is not a big deal. You should think that you aren't the ugliest-"
"Okay that's enough with the ugly talk." he said grumpily. "And plus, it's not a way to behave with people." he was offended. God, It was so funny.
"It's exactly the way to behave narcissists." I reverted back and he squinted at me.
Why am I always so rough with this boy?
"Just chill Blakey boy, I'm kidding." I said hitting his arm playfully. "There's no thing such as ugly in existence. Everyone's pretty in own way. Like, come on look at me. I'm not that bad. You don't look bad either. "
"Way to ruin such an incredible quote, Char. Anyway that was impressive. I didn't know people think that." he said with a chuckle.
"Think what?" I asked and my thoughts immediately travelled back to the part where I said that there was nothing like ugly in this world. "It's not a concept, Blake. It's the truth." I said with a smile and he smiled back.
He suddenly pulled the car to a halt. I drew my eyesbrows in confusion when I realised that it wasn't my home. Blake got out of his car, leaving me puzzled and walked towards the other side of the car, towards me, to pull the door open.
Such a gentleman.
I got off the car and let him shut the door behind.
"I'm afraid the place you've brought me to isn't the same as the one I recognise as my residential address, Mr Vector." I said scanning my location carefully. We had parked near The Frozen Stone, my favorite ice cream store.
I mean it's nearest to my home so I love it.
Blake tried his best to not laugh.
"Oh, then pardon me Ms Evans if I made an effort in order to please you with some ice cream, as you can see." he said gesturing towards the ice-cream store.
"Ice cream?" my eyes lit up in excitement. "Is it your birthday?"
"No."
"You got an A?"
"No. I don't do A's, Char." he said with a small laugh.
I roll my eyes. "You don't do A's or the A's don't do you!" he narrowed his eyes at me. "Wait, did you finally got yourself some friends?"
"That's not it either?"
"uh-huh." he shook his head. I was getting tired of guessing but I just couldn't stop.
I smirked at him, narrowing my eyes. His brown orbs reflected pure confusion. Oh my god I was loving it! Ha!
I nudged his chest with my elbow.
"Ow!" he cried. Oops! Was it that bad? "What now?" he asked in pain.
"Did you finally found the direction for your magnitude, Vector?" I said wiggling my eyebrows at him. He looked at me as if I was mad. "I mean did you finally got yourself a girlfriend?"
"Yes." he said and I was on the verge of squealing in excitement when he continued, "I mean I have no issues if you count yourself as one."
"Smooth. Really smooth, Vector." I said annoyed. I didn't like that. "Tell me Blake, did you do something great?"
"No." he patiently replied. I mean it's so different from what I'm used to. He didn't even stop me. Even I get irritated with myself after a point, but Blake seemed to be much cool about it all.
I'm used to comebacks. I'm used to Finn's irritating comebacks.
Not again. I told myself and decided to divert my mind.
"Is it your marriage anniversary then?"
"Are you done, Char?" he said. "I mean can't I treat my only friend with an ice cream? Isn't that much of a reason?" he folded his arms over his chest.
"Only friend? El would be offended." I laughed, smacking his arm gently. "Besides, I like messing with you, Blakey boy. Your reactions are priceless." I continued laughing.
"Oh, admit it, I'm just attractive." he said flipping back his imaginary brown locks.
My mouth turned into an 'o'. "Not more than me, though." I lied sassily. I am as attractive as dirt.
"That you are." his sudden reply got me off guard. "but you know what?" he cockily began speaking. I waited for him to continue. "I'm so attractive that if an apple falls from a tree under which I'm standing, it doesn't falls on the ground it falls over me."
"You sure you blame it on your attractiveness and not your misfortune?" I said in a tone that made him snicker. The sound of his laughter muffled by his hands filled my ears, running a shiver down my spine. He was just inches away from where I stood.
"but believe me it's nothing. I'm so attractive that our Physics lab attendent uses me instead of magnet during the experiments."
"Yeah, that's because, scrap is all you can attract, Cherry!" he mocked.
"Don't call me that! And I can attract real guys!" I snapped. He stood back and enjoyed himself. I realised how close my face was to his own. He didn't step back.
"I doubt that!" he huskily replied, as his forehead touched mine. What the hell we were we even doing?
"It's your own abilities that you should doubt Mr Vector!"
"Okay then." he said leaning away, back to our initial positions. "Let's test it. We'll walk in the ice cream store and hit on the first person about our age we see there! Of course if it's a girl then it will be my turn first. If its a guy then you can try. Who so ever manages to get a number wins."
"I highly doubt that a decent guy like you would even want to try that." I said.
"I might be the sweatest guy on the planet but I can be a little bad for you." he leaned towards my ear and whispered softly. I felt a Crimson red colour burning on my cheeks.
"It's on Blakey Boy!" I said masking my blush and marching towards the store.
"I'm coming too Cherry!"
"Geez, that's a pathetic name!"
****
We both were about to enter the store when we noticed a tall girl stepping out and the automatic glass doors shutting behind. She was messing with her phone not really paying attention.
"You can go first, Blake. It's your chance. Prove yourself." I whispered. All of a sudden I realised that I was talking to just air.
"Blake?" I turned back and to look at my friend turned opponent who was apparently trying to rush in the opposite direction.
I held him by the material of this shirt.
"Where are you going mister?"
"I realised that I really don't feel like talking to that one." he nervously pointed towards the brunette I just spotted.
I squinted at him. "Because she's out of your league?" I questioned and his face was deviod of all the colours.
"Don't say that." he said, leaving me perplexed. He was darn serious.
"Then why?"
"Because she's my-"
"Blake?" I turned in the direction of the source of the voice. My eyes scanned the girl whom I spotted a couple of minutes ago, now standing in front of us. She wore a yellow sundress, completely complementing her striking features.
They knew each other?
"H-Hey, Megan." he said shaking her hand reluctantly. I scanned the two of them, waiting them to break the eye contact.
"How are you, Blake? You never text or call me anymore." she said, probably still not noticing me. Blake didn't seem to be in a mood to talk.
"Yeah, right because, we totally did leave on the best terms." Blake flashed his biggest smile to her.
Oooohh.... Drama. Was it an ex girlfriend drama that I was sensing?
If that was true, it meant that this Megan chick was the one who cheated on Blakey Boy?
This ditch with a b-
She looked totally burnt by his remark. Her eyes soon travelled back to me.
Finally!
She scanned me from top to bottom as if she was a QR code scanning machine.
"I never realised you were standing here with him, I just thought you were a janitor." The girl said. "I'm Megan Hedge, as in Blake's ex." she smiled terribly at me. Like a pathetic loser she was.
Blake clearly looked offended by the way she talked to me and was about to throw another comeback at her when I stopped him, stepping in.
I smiled back at her. "Is that the name you write in your passport too? No. Wait, I know you! You are the dumb af bitch who ran off to some dude? Ah, right, Blake told me about you." I was so happy with the rotten look on her face. I probably said the b-word for the first time in life but she earned it for herself.
Her sighed transported me back to the day when I met Blake in the park three months ago. He was dealing with pain a thousand times better than I was but he was hurt and I certainly didn't like it.
Back to the present, I realised that this moment was perfect for turning the tables and winning our bet.
"And oh by the way Megan the ex, I'm his Y and Z." I stated triumphantly. She looked skeptic. "I mean his present and future girlfriend."
"You are a-"
"Shut the hell up Megan." it was Blake's turn to snap. I mean wow, I expected that boy to remain shook because of the drama I stirred into his life but he stood up like there was nothing wrong with my statement.
I knew Megan wanted to strangle me to death but she just threw a glance at me and left turning away. I was left with Blake by my side.
"You know just realised that I don't even have your phone number, Vector." I blurted out of the blue to make him say atleast something for the sake of preventing the awkwardness.
"You really want my number now?" he asked arching a perfect eyebrow at me and I just nodded.
A small smile crawled upon his lips as I took out my phone and nervously typed the digits he narrated, putting up a brave front.
"I realised something." he said with a smile still playing upon his lips. His brown eyes appeared to gleaming yet again.
"I realised I didn't even have to try winning our bet. A girl declared herself as my girlfriend just now." he locked his eyes with mine. A smirk soon appeared on my face too.
"But if I'm not mistaken Mr Vector," I said smugly lifting my phone, "I managed to get a guy's number at the end of the day."
A/N
Hi everyone!
Long time and no see.
In case if anyone was wondering, no, I wasn't dead or buried. It's just I caught up with stuff and couldn't update but here I have another crappy chapter for you all!
Actually, it's my least favorite chapter till now for several reasons.
Anyway, still got a few questions. Feel free to reply :)
1. The dream Char saw was something that happened in reality. What do you think? What had happened?
2. Does Finn have a right to hate her?
3. Everyone loving my Blakey Boy so far?
4. Favorite part of the chapter (if any of course. It was horrendous.)
5. Favorite character till now?
6. Anyone/ anything you'd like to see in the next chapter?
So please let me know your views. It keeps me motivated.
P.s Let's Lie is about to hit 20k and let's Pretend 1k. Thank you so much, loves.
P. S. S random question, how do you pronounce Z? We say zedd here.
