Day 20
" Mia! Wake up!*
I groaned and turned over. " Blue, do me a favor and keep it down. My head's gonna burst."
" What do you mean??*
" You know what I mean." I mumbled as I snuggled in his chair, still half asleep. " I mean Mewtwo."
"Mewtwo?" Blue's voice shot up an octave, sounding more panicked than usual. "What did you do this time?!"
I groaned again, burying my face into the armrest of his chair. "Caught him. Well, tried to. He didn’t exactly agree with me, and let’s just say… things got a little intense."
Blue paced the room, throwing his hands in the air. "A little intense? Mia, your face looks like you went five rounds with a Machamp, and I don’t even wanna know what you did to my gym door!"
"Relax, Blue," I muttered sleepily. "You can fix the door. And the scratches on the floor. And the dent in the wall."
Blue froze mid-step, his jaw dropping. "What dent in the wall?!"
I cracked one eye open, gesturing lazily to the large, very visible dent in the far corner. "That one. Mewtwo did it. Or maybe it was me when he tried to Psychic me into a tree. Honestly, it’s a blur."
Before Blue could explode into one of his famous rants, Red strolled into the room. He stopped short when he saw me sprawled in Blue's chair, covered in dirt, scratches, and… was that berry juice again?
"Don’t say it," I warned, pointing a finger at him without looking up. "I’m not in the mood."
Red tilted his head, raising an eyebrow in silent amusement. His Pikachu perched on his shoulder gave an amused "Pika pi," clearly judging my life choices.
Blue, still frazzled, turned to Red. "Do you see what I have to deal with?! She’s your sister. Can’t you do something?"
Red smirked, shrugging as if to say, This is your problem now, bro.
I groaned louder, sitting up and rubbing my temples. "Can you two stop bickering for five seconds? I just need a nap before I figure out how to catch Mewtwo for real this time."
Blue practically shrieked. "For real?! You’re going back after him?!"
"Of course," I said matter-of-factly. "I’m not letting some overgrown Psychic cat get the better of me."
Red facepalmed, shaking his head in exasperation. Pikachu snickered on his shoulder.
"Fine," Blue huffed, pointing an accusatory finger at me. "But if you’re going after him again, you’re not using my gym as your base of operations! Take your chaos somewhere else!"
I stood up, stretching and ignoring Blue’s rant. "Whatever you say, Gramps 2.0. I’ll take my chaos to Vermilion City next."
Blue groaned. "This is why no one wants to battle you."
I grinned. "That’s because I’m awesome."
Red let out a silent laugh as Blue stomped away, muttering under his breath. As I headed for the door, Red followed, his Pikachu giving me a supportive "Pika!"
"At least someone believes in me," I said, shooting Red a grin. He rolled his eyes but gave me a thumbs-up.
"Alright, Mewtwo," I said, cracking my knuckles. "Round two. Let’s go."
" WHAT ARE YOU DOING BACK HERE?!"
I groaned again. " Blue not now."
" Pikaaaaa...." Pikachu agreed, leaning on the chair.
" REEEED?! YOUR SISTER TRIED TO CATCH MEWTWO AND NOW SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE NEEDS MEDICAL ATTENTION!"
I yawned lazily. " No I don't."
YES, YOU DO!" Blue yelled, practically vibrating with frustration. "You look like you just went through a wood chipper and then fell into a berry blender!"
"Pikachu," Pikachu said calmly, clearly backing me up. The little guy hopped onto the armrest of the chair, looking entirely unbothered by the chaos.
I waved a dismissive hand at Blue. "It’s just a few scratches. I’m fine. Mewtwo didn’t get me that bad."
Blue pointed at me, his face red with fury. "Mewtwo Psychic-slammed you into a tree, Mia!"
I shrugged. "Trees are softer than rocks."
"THAT IS NOT A DEFENSE!" Blue practically screeched.
Red, standing in the doorway, rubbed his temples. He looked to Pikachu, who shrugged as if to say, This is her normal behavior, bro.
I yawned again, snuggling deeper into Blue’s chair. "Can’t you just let me rest? Yelling isn’t going to fix anything."
Blue threw his hands in the air. "Rest?! Rest?! You’re sitting here like it’s a vacation while your face looks like a Snorlax used it as a trampoline!"
"Pikachu," Pikachu muttered, clearly agreeing that I deserved a break.
"Thank you, Pikachu," I said, nodding in appreciation. "At least someone here understands."
Blue glared at Pikachu. "You’re not helping, electric rodent."
Red stepped forward, finally deciding to intervene. He pointed at me, then mimed bandaging his arm.
I groaned. "I don’t need a bandage, Red. I’ll heal. What I need is another plan to catch Mewtwo."
"NO, WHAT YOU NEED IS A DOCTOR!" Blue yelled.
I sat up, glaring at him. "I don’t have time for a doctor, Blue! Mewtwo’s out there, laughing at me, plotting his next psychic takedown! I can’t let him win!"
Blue rubbed his face in frustration. "Red, say something! She’s your sister!"
Red stared at me, then slowly signed, You’re crazy.
I gasped, clutching my chest dramatically. "Traitor!"
Pikachu fell over laughing as Blue threw his head back and groaned. "You know what? Fine! Go get yourself killed by Mewtwo. Just don’t bring the aftermath back to my gym!"
"Fine by me," I said, standing up and brushing imaginary dust off my clothes. "Come on, Pikachu. Let’s go."
"Pika!" Pikachu chirped, hopping onto my shoulder as we headed for the door. Red followed, clearly resigned to supervising my inevitable disaster.
Behind us, Blue shouted, "Don’t come crying to me when you end up in a full-body cast!"
"Noted!" I called back, grinning. "See you later, Blue!"
As we left, Red gave me a sideways glance, shaking his head in exasperation. I grinned up at him. "Oh, come on, Red. You know you’re coming with me. Let’s catch this Mewtwo!"
Red sighed but nodded, giving Pikachu a pat as we marched out to face round two.
I was peacefully napping in my room, dreaming of finally catching Mewtwo, when my door flew open with a bang that could have scared a flock of Spearow out of a forest.
"YOU LOST TO RED?!" Blue’s voice was loud enough to shake the walls.
I groaned, pulling my blanket over my head. "Blue, do you ever knock? Or maybe use an inside voice?"
He ignored me, stomping into my room like a Rhyhorn on a rampage. "DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG I’VE BEEN WAITING TO SEE YOU BEAT THAT SILENT MENACE?! AND YOU LOSE?!"
I peeked out from under the blanket, squinting at him. "First of all, I didn’t lose. I just… strategically let him win."
"Strategically let him win?!" Blue’s jaw dropped so hard I thought it might hit the floor. "Red told me he wiped the floor with you!"
I rolled my eyes and sat up, Pikachu hopping off my bed to sit smugly beside me. "Okay, so maybe I tripped and accidentally threw my Pokéball at myself. It happens."
Blue buried his face in his hands. "How do you even function as a trainer?"
"Quite well, thank you," I said, crossing my arms. "Besides, Red cheated."
Blue looked up, his eyes narrowing. "Red doesn’t cheat. He doesn’t even speak, for Arceus’ sake."
"Exactly!" I exclaimed, pointing dramatically. "He uses his mysterious silent act to throw me off my game!"
Blue threw his hands up. "Oh, please! You’re just mad because Red’s better than you."
I gasped, clutching my chest in mock betrayal. "How dare you say that to your own friend-slash-occasional rival-slash-sibling-by-proxy!"
"Because it’s true!" Blue snapped. "You’re out here trying to catch Mewtwo, and you can’t even beat your mute brother!"
"I WAS HAVING AN OFF DAY!" I yelled, throwing a pillow at him.
Blue caught it midair and tossed it back at me. "Off day or not, you’re a disgrace! You’re supposed to be my star pupil, my one hope of finally seeing Red lose in public! Do you know how many bets I’ve lost because of him?"
I blinked. "Wait, you’re betting on us?"
Blue crossed his arms, glaring. "Of course I am! How do you think I afford to keep that fancy gym chair of mine?"
I groaned, flopping back onto my bed. "Blue, you’re the worst."
"And you’re the most chaotic trainer I’ve ever met," he shot back. "Now get up and start training! If you’re going to beat Mewtwo, you’d better at least be able to beat Red first."
"Ugh, fine," I muttered, rolling out of bed. "But if I break another nail, I’m blaming you."
Blue smirked, stepping aside as I grabbed my Pokéballs. "Good luck, kid. You’re gonna need it."
Pikachu hopped onto my shoulder, giving Blue a smug look as we walked past him. "Pika!"
"Yeah, yeah," Blue muttered. "You’re all talk now, but we’ll see who’s laughing when she tries to throw herself at Mewtwo again."
I ignored him, muttering under my breath. "This time, I’m not losing to either of them. Mewtwo, you’re mine!"
Two hours later, I sat on the floor of my room, wincing as I wrapped yet another bandage around my arm. My legs were covered in scratches, my clothes were torn, and I had a rather large bump forming on my head. Pikachu sat next to me, holding the roll of bandages with a look of sympathy.
I muttered to myself as I adjusted the bandage. "Totally worth it. Two Legendary Birds in one day? I’m basically unstoppable."
The door slammed open, and there stood Blue, looking like he was ready to blow a gasket. "WHAT DID YOU DO THIS TIME?!"
I looked up, wincing at the loudness. "Blue, can you not? I’m injured here."
"I CAN SEE THAT!" he roared, marching over to me. "HOW DID THIS EVEN HAPPEN? WHY DO YOU LOOK LIKE YOU WENT THROUGH A TYPHOON?"
I smirked, holding up two Pokéballs. "Because I caught Zapdos and Articuno."
Blue froze, his jaw dropping as he stared at the Pokéballs. "Wait… you what?"
"I caught them," I said smugly, despite the fact that I looked like I had been thrown off a mountain. "It was a little rough, but I did it."
"A LITTLE ROUGH?!" Blue screeched, gesturing wildly to my bruised and bandaged body. "YOU LOOK LIKE YOU GOT INTO A FISTFIGHT WITH A RHYHORN AND LOST!"
"Hey, Zapdos has a mean Thunder attack, okay?" I said defensively. "And Articuno’s Blizzard? Let’s just say it’s not fun to get hit with that multiple times."
Blue threw his hands in the air. "WHY DID YOU EVEN GO AFTER THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE?"
"Because I’m awesome," I replied, grinning. "And now I’ve got two Legendary Birds. What have you done today?"
Blue looked like he was about to explode. "I’VE BEEN CLEANING UP THE GYM AFTER YOU DESTROYED IT LAST TIME!"
"Ah, good times," I said, leaning back against my bed.
Blue pinched the bridge of his nose, groaning. "You’re impossible. Do you even realize how dangerous this was? You could’ve been killed!"
"But I wasn’t," I said, holding up the Pokéballs again. "And now I have these beauties to show for it."
Blue glared at me, clearly torn between being impressed and being furious. "You’re unbelievable."
"I know," I said, smirking. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to figure out how to catch Moltres. Third bird, here I come!"
Blue’s eyes widened in horror. "OH, NO, YOU DON’T! YOU’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE UNTIL YOU FULLY HEAL!"
I shrugged. "Eh, a few scrapes won’t stop me."
Blue grabbed the bandages from Pikachu and started wrapping me up like a mummy. "Oh, yes, they will. You’re grounded."
"You can’t ground me," I said, laughing. "I’m basically a Pokémon Master now."
Blue leaned in, glaring. "Watch me."
I groaned, slumping against the bed as Pikachu patted my head in pity. "Fine, but only because I need a nap. Zapdos and Articuno really took it out of me."
Blue muttered something about "crazy trainers" as he stomped out of the room, leaving me to dream of Moltres and the chaos I’d undoubtedly bring.
