Day 13
Lance’s face turned pale as he held the bottle of Modafinil. He looked at me, his normally composed demeanor completely gone. "Mia, do you even know what this is for?!"
I tilted my head innocently. "No…? It said ‘keeps you awake’ on the label, and I needed to stay awake. So I took it."
Gary groaned and pressed his hands to his temples. "Mia, that’s not how it works! You can’t just pop pills like they’re candy!"
Lorelei knelt in front of me, her voice soft but filled with concern. "Sweetheart, did you read the warnings or dosage instructions on any of these medications?"
I blinked at her, confused. "Warnings? Dosage?"
Bruno muttered something under his breath and began pacing, his hands clenched into fists. Greta rubbed her temples. "This girl is going to give me gray hairs."
Oak, still fanning himself, took the Modafinil bottle from Lance. "This is a prescription drug meant for very specific medical conditions, Mia. You shouldn’t have access to this, let alone be taking it without a doctor’s guidance!"
I frowned. "But it worked! I’ve been awake, haven’t I?"
Gary looked like he was about to explode. "Mia, being awake doesn’t mean you’re healthy! What else have you been taking?"
I hesitated before reluctantly opening my bag. "Uh… just a few things…"
The room collectively gasped as I began pulling out bottles one by one.
"Melatonin?!" Lance exclaimed, holding up a bottle. "You’ve been mixing this with Modafinil?"
"Wait—these are caffeine pills!" Lorelei added, examining another bottle.
Bruno’s eyes narrowed as he held up a half-empty bottle. "This… this is pre-workout powder. Why on earth are you taking this, Mia?!"
I shrugged. "It tastes good."
Greta snatched another bottle. "And this one says ‘do not take with stimulants’! Mia, do you realize how dangerous this is?!"
I blinked, genuinely puzzled. "Dangerous? But I’ve been fine."
Gary was no longer groaning. He had stormed into the next room, and I could hear him screaming something about "this girl’s recklessness" and "how is she still alive?!"
Meanwhile, Oak had sat down, fanning himself even more aggressively. "She’s been mixing uppers, downers, and everything in between. It’s a miracle her body hasn’t given out!"
I crossed my arms, starting to feel defensive. "You guys are overreacting. I’m fine!"
"Mia," Lance said, his tone firm but kind. "Your heart is probably under a lot of stress from all this. Mixing these medications can cause serious damage, even if you feel fine now."
Lorelei nodded, her expression gentle but serious. "You might not feel the effects right away, but this could lead to long-term health problems. We’re not mad, Mia—we’re worried."
Bruno paced faster, muttering, "Worried? I’m terrified."
Greta sighed. "Mia, why didn’t you talk to anyone if you were having trouble sleeping? We’re here to help, you know."
I looked down, feeling a little guilty. "I didn’t want to bother anyone… and the Elite Four thing was stressing me out, so I thought I’d handle it myself."
Gary stormed back into the room, his face red with frustration. "Handle it yourself?! Mia, you could’ve hurt yourself—or worse! What would we do if something happened to you, huh?!"
His outburst made me flinch. I wasn’t used to seeing Gary so emotional.
Oak cleared his throat, his voice steady despite his earlier panic. "Mia, we’re going to need to get you checked out by a doctor to make sure everything is okay. No arguments."
I nodded reluctantly, feeling the weight of everyone’s concern. "Okay… I’m sorry, guys. I didn’t mean to scare you."
Lorelei smiled gently and patted my shoulder. "It’s okay, dear. We just want you to be safe."
Lance sighed, rubbing his temples. "From now on, no more self-medicating. If you have a problem, you come to us. Got it?"
I nodded again. "Got it."
Gary let out a deep breath, sitting next to me. "You’re lucky we care about you, Mia. But seriously—don’t ever do this again."
"Pika!" my Pikachu added, wagging a paw at me like a tiny parent.
Despite the tension, I couldn’t help but laugh a little. "Okay, okay. No more pills. I promise."
As the adults finally began to relax, I realized just how much they all cared about me. Even if their worry was overwhelming, it felt… kind of nice to know I wasn’t alone.
